21" (53 cm.) All-stockinette doll with deeply impressed features, painted brown eyes with deeply set eye sockets, brown painted hair, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with impressed dimples, stitch jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, stitch-defined fingers with separate thumbs. Condition: structurally excellent, original finish albeit very scrubbed finish. Comments: American, circa 1890, the doll was commissioned for the J.B. Sheppard department store of Philadelphia, although the actual maker remains a mystery. Value Points: the cheerful fellow wearing wonderful antique costume, and owns two extremely worn little teddies with wool costumes and shoe button eyes....more

American Cloth Lithographed Topsy-Turvy Doll with Pressed Mask Face by Bruckner 400/600

Lot # 286 (Sale Order: 283 of 345)      

11" (28 cm.) An alternate doll head is posed on either side of a muslin torso, and designed so that the full-length costume which accompanies each head will hide the alternate head. When the doll is flipped over, the second head and second costume appear. Each head has sewn-on lithographed face with pressed-mask features, including black child with brown eyes, painted black hair, red hair ribbons, smiling expression with double row of teeth, wearing red bandana and cotton costume with apron; and white child with blue eyes, curly blonde hair, and wearing original blue muslin dress and apron. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Albert Bruckner, the dolls appeared in the Babyland Rag Series of Horsman, circa 1915. All-cloth doll whose firmly stuffed head is formed by side seams and back seam that extends over the crown and onto the forehead, painted pale complexion that is emphasized by painted black curly hair, brown outlined eyes with shading and accent dots, black brows, outlined nose, daintily painted mouth, heavily stuffed torso, stitch jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, painted stockings and black one-strap shoes, antique costume and bonnet. Condition: generally excellent with light rubs on her hair and typical craquelure. Comments: American, late 1800s, unknown folk artist. Value Points: most charming presence, the doll's curiously "grown-up" face with compelling solemnity was likely occasioned by the artist's unschooled painting skills....more
