Porcelain waist-up figure of adult woman with very stylized pose and slender shape, her head turned sharply to the right and uptilted, revealing her slender tall throat, having brown sculpted hair with wide side poufs and long ringlet curls onto her shoulders, unusual mustard-gold very low-cut blouse with shaded purple collar and a single Dresden rose at the center, her arms posed away from her body with elegantly posed fingers. Excellent condition. Germany, circa 1900, a rare model in unusual large size.
Outstanding German Porcelain Half Doll "Gold Earrings Lady" Attributed to Royal Rudolstadt $900/1300

18" (46 cm.) overall. 7 1/2" waist-up. Porcelain waist-up nude figure of slender adult lady, her head turned modestly downward and to the right, with slender angular facial shape and throat, brown sculpted loosely-flowing hair captured in a loose roll at the back and decorated with large turquoise beads, very long gold earrings edging her throat, unusual modeling of face with pronounced nose enhanced by finely-detailed blush spots, her arms having bent elbows and held modestly in front of her bodice with elegantly posed fingers. The half doll is attached to her original wire lamp cage and is costumed in antique embroidered silks. Excellent condition. Attributed to Royal Rudolstadt, Germany, circa 1900
Outstanding French Bisque "Juliette's Poupee" by Pierre-Victor Clement with Provenance $12,000/17,00

17" (43 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, blue glass enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with pale accented lips, pierced ears, hip-length hand-tied human hair wig over cork pate, very shapely all-blown-leather body with dowel-jointing at the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, and having well-defined fingers and toes. Condition: generally excellent, body especially sturdy and clean. Marks: Poupee Brevetee SGDG (stamp on kid collarette). Comments: Pierre-Victor Clement, circa 1867, the poupee has Clement's unique deposed body of molded hollow ("blown") leather. Value Points: preserved in impeccable original condition, enhancing the beautiful bisque face, the doll was originally owned by Juliette Chouanard (ne de la Hogue-Moreau) of Paris (1861-1930), from a distinguished French family, passed onto Juliette's daughter, and then in 1978 passed into the hands of the private collector who preserved the doll until this day. The doll was featured in a 1988 article in Doll News, and retains much of its original costumes including a superb pair of Huret-like ankle boots, silk gown with matching cap, chemisette, undergarments, and bone-handled silk parasol, along with a photograph of Juliette.
Extremely Rare Previously Undocumented French Bisque Bebe by Pierre-Victor Clement $20,000/30,000

17" (43 cm.) Pressed bisque socket head with very distinctive portrait-like expression, blue glass spiral-threaded eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, mauve-blushed eye-shadow and cheek and chin blush, aquiline-shaped nose with shaded nostrils, closed mouth, outlined lips, impressed dimples at lip corners, pierced ears, original blonde mohair wig over cork pate, molded hollow ("blown") leather body in classic bebe proportions with dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, side-hips and side-knees, well-defined fingers and toes. Condition: generally excellent, a very fine nearly imperceptible 1" line at forehead rim (under wig, appears original), leather dent in torso, original body finish. Marks: (see inset photo of foot bottom). Comments: Pierre-Victor Clement, who deposed the body for his hollow-leather body poupee in 1867; the body for this bebe model is constructed in the same method, only having childlike proportions rather than the taller and more slender lady body. Circa 1875. Value Points: extremely rare, no other bebe model from Clement is known to exist, and having stunningly beautiful bisque face, the doll is preserved in an early wooden box along with an assortment of her original handmade costumes of the mid/late 1870s comprising two dresses, two jackets, three bonnets, two pairs of shoes (one pair signed C.C., one pair stamped G), night shift and split-leg drawers.
Rare German Bisque Portrait of Native American, 1303, by Simon and Halbig $7500/9500

Bisque socket head with golden-sienna complexion, brown painted upper glancing eyes, black upper eyeliner, black one-stroke brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with richly-shaded lips, black mohair braids, sienna-tinted composition and wooden ball-jointed body, antique kidskin and beaded costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 1303 Germany S&H 1. Comments: Simon and Halbig, circa 1912. Value Points: very rare doll with superb detail of sculpting especially featuring strong pronounced nose and cheek bones, furrowed details around bridge of nose and mouth, fine patina of rich complexion, original body and body finish.
Pair, Carved Wooden Native Dolls in Original Costumes $900/1300

18" (46 cm.) Each is all hard-carved wood in the folk-manner style with socket head, carved hair with defined comb-marks, chiseled features with unique expression on each face, dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: late 19th/early 20th century, unknown carver, probably Eskimo. Value Points: artfully-carved figures with well-rendered facial expressions, hair, articulation and each wearing original native costume of suede, kidskin, fur and bone, the woman with kidskin back pack in which is resting a carved wooden baby torso with jointed arms. The dolls were previously featured on the cover of Quiet Footsteps, Theriault's February 2002 catalog.
French Toy Horse Toy and Accessories on Original Card $800/1000

17" (43 cm.) Arranged on a sturdy cardboard, 17" x 12", with blue paper and decorative paper edging are toys related to horse and stable; a carved wooden horse head with hide cover and glass eyes is attached to a decorative leather belt with silver bells, designed to be worn by a small child (but quite usable by a 25"-30" doll) as though pretending to giddy-up while a second child holds the reins and wields a wooden and leather horse whip and silver whistle which are also attached. Very good unplayed with condition, still attached to original card, hide worn on horse, cardboard worn. French, attributed to Lenoble, circa 1900, among their production of toy animals were "panoplies" such as this.

Comments: Germany, circa 1875, the doll was costumed and presented for the English market. Value Points: a note attached to the front of the skirt is "Adele, Wales, 1874", and a further note on the inside of the cape reads "Doll belonged to Cornelia J. Von Strolen, National Costume Wales (England) 1874, aunt of ...von Strolen, given by her to Dorothy W. Clatton"; the peddler doll is presented in well-detailed original costume including classic tall hat, and with her bird and bird cage squeek toy.
Outstanding Collection of 19th Century Miniature Tools $2500/3500

7" (18 cm.) largest worktables. Of maitrise quality work in both cabinetry and cast metal work, the large collection includes three wooden work tables with clamps and drawers, and a fourth work table of cast bronze. There are 11 wooden planes of various sizes, six wooden-handled hammers, various saws, screw drivers, and other loose tools, as well as an exhibition card with 19 additional tools ranging from trowels to picks to axes, each with wooden handles and hand-cast iron or brass fittings. And another exhibition card with 15 cast brass miniature tools. The workmanship is exceptional, the examples of tools handcast and authentic. (A doll of 7"-9" would display with the tools). Mid-19th century. Excellent condition.

Condition: generally excellent, few body patches, two missing finger tips. Marks: Depose (forehead) D (head and shoulder plate). Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, his 1872 deposed model of a gently-smiling lady, inspired by the beloved Empress Eugenie. Value Points: accompanying the very beautiful and sought-after model is historical provenance, including a photograph of the original owner as a young girl with a note "the original owner as she looked when her parents brought Miss Minnie to her from Paris", a mid-century letter from Mrs. Willis Clark, daughter of the original owner, and, notably, a tintype of Miss Minnie from her earliest days. The doll has been in the private collection of the present owner since 1952

Value Points: an outstanding example of the luxury bebe with superb sculpting, bisque and painting, and wonderfully preserved. From the private collection of Anne Rice, the doll is described by her as "the star of my collection, inspiring the description in the novel Taltos of the the French doll given by the hero Ashlar to the Mayfair family". In the novel, the doll is described as "his Bru, his princess, his French beauty...a bisque doll of impeccable standards." Accompanying the doll is a an autographed of Anne Rice with the doll, as well as a copy of the novel, Taltos. The doll also appears on the back cover of Interview with the Vampire.

French Poupee's Silk Pagoda-Shape Parasol $600/900

Having a carved bone handle and tip, the parasol is fitted with rare curved tines which create a pagoda-like shape when the parasol is opened; fitted with frail original coral silk and having a variegated-color silk fringe. Excellent condition excepting fraility of silk. French, circa 1865, the pagoda parasol is considered one of the rarest of poupee accessories.

Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, all-wooden body with dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles, and having extra pivot-jointing at waist and thighs. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: A la Poupee de Nuremberg/ 21 rue de Choiseul/ Lavallee-Peronne/ Trousseaux Complets, Reparations/ Paris (paper label on front torso). Comments: Lily, the signature poupee from the doll shop of Madame Lavallee-Peronne, circa 1865; the doll was mentioned in La Poupee Modele, of which Lavalle-Peronne was a major contributor from its beginning in 1863, referred to as "the doll maker of exquisite taste." Value Points: an important pivotal doll in poupee history, this example beautifully preserved with lovely bisque and artfully-crafted body, original label.
Superb Early Wooden Fully-Jointed Doll with Original Costume $7000/10,000

All-wooden doll with heart-shaped face and elongated slender throat, one piece head and torso with modeled bosom and high waist, rounded crown of head accentuating the black painted hair with elaborate details of curls onto her forehead, painted ivory complexion, pale green eyes with detailed-threaded and painted lashes, brush-stroked brows, aquiline nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth, blush spots on cheeks and chin, elongated limbs with dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, well-defined fingers, painted yellow slippers with black outline, and wearing original coral velvet and metallic lace gown over ivory satin, with paillette-trimmed braid, worn silk pantalets tied at the ankles. Condition: generally excellent, finish well-preserved except one vertical paint-split on each cheek. Comments: Circa 1830, believed to be for the French market, the actual doll is presented in a full-page photograph in The Panorama of Parisienne Dolls by Theimer, described as "articulated wooden Parisienne doll, Empire era". Value Points: superb carving of the large poupee is especially evident in her profile view, her beautifully sculpted face and throat are clearly patrician in her breeding.
