Dr. Mota's Medicine Show Poster from the 1960s in San Francisco

Lot # 313 (Sale Order: 313 of 350)

Offered is a small color poster of the well-known Dr. Mota's Medicine Show from the sixties. This poster features Jim Phillips' drawing of a broken down truck converted into a traveling medicine show wagon with signs all over it. The signs are all in reference to natural drugs of the day, such as marijuana, cannabis, peyote, and other drugs and oils. This drawing is a good representation of the general attitude towards drugs at the time and is printed on a thin paper with text and graphics on the back. Although we found information about the poster itself, we were not able to find specific details on the initial poster. The size of our poster is approximately 15 inches x 10-1/8 inches and we believe is a first printing. This is 100% original with tack holes and tape to the corners, tears, and wrinkles. No attempt was made to restore or repair this item. Both sides had about 1/2 of an inch folded under before this was tacked to the wall....more

5 Cent Gum or Candy Vending by Universal Vendor in St. Louis, Missouri

Lot # 317 (Sale Order: 317 of 350)

This is an original, never used, 5 cent vending machine right out of the original shipping box. We have never seen a machine this clean before. The machine is identical to the machines made by Oak Manufacturing and may have been made by them for Universal Vendors, as they did make custom machines for other vendors in there early years circa 1945. The machine has an embossed lid that reads, "Universal Vendors of St. Louis, MO. Almond-ette." The thank you cover features an image of a globe, which we had not seen before. Instead of the usual glass globe this features a metal top with 3 removable clear plastic panels with one panel having an original decal that states, "Universals Candy Coated Almonds." The size is approximately 14 inches x 6-1/2 inches x 6-1/2 inches. The machine has an adjustable wheel inside that can vend almost any type of candy, gum, or nuts. Since the machine was referred to as an Almond-ette on both the top lid and decal, we thought it only appropriate to fill it with Jordan Almonds for the pictures. The machine was filled to take pictures and will be sent empty....more

Val. Blatz Brewing Company Pebble-Lettered Glass

Lot # 322 (Sale Order: 322 of 350)

This lot is for a pre-prohibition or prohibition era glass from the Val. Blatz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We think this was most likely a soda glass, which the company produced in this time period. Instead of the usual acid-etched design, this features a raised pebble finish to the design. The shape of the glass is similar to the Coca Cola glasses of the day and not the standard straight sided glasses seen with the beer glasses of the day. This piece has fluted or ribs to the inside and is approximately 4 inches tall x 2-1/2 inches at the top x 1-3/4 inches at the base. There are no chips, cracks, or fleabites....more

Lot # 323 (Sale Order: 323 of 350)

This lot is for an old original five-colored, embossed die-cut bottle-shaped metal thermometer. It advertises "Genuine Hires Root Beer." We believe this to be circa 1965 and is about as nice as you will ever find. The size is approximately 28-5/8 inches x 7-5/8 inches x 1 inch deep. You will not believe how vivid and bright the colors are. There is a thin scratch on the left side through the "H" in "Hires" and extends to the white line below, which is mentioned for accuracy as it may not be visible in the pictures....more
