FOUR (4) AUSTRIAN & GERMAN NOTGELD - EMERGENCY MONEY in HYPERINFLATION - RARE - COLORFUL

Four really gorgeous and colorful notes. Notgeld is German for "emergency money", and these were issued in the early 1920's to combat hyperinflation. Notgeld was given out to replace the legal tender that was normally used. Notgeld was mostly valid as a means of payment only for a limited period and in a specific region. It was issued on behalf of the Central bank (legally) or outside of legislation by private banks, firms, local authorities (towns, counties etc.), clubs or other institutions. These four notes are in wonderful condition, only one with a light corner crease. All appear to be uncirculated and feature beautiful bold artwork.

THREE (3) BANK OF CHINA NOTES - 1936 5 YUAN, 1937 10 YUAN, and 1930 5 CUSTOMS GOLD UNITS

This lot consists of: 1930 5 Customs Gold Units, 1936 Five Yuan, 1937 Ten Yuan. All notes grade fine to very fine and are attractive examples. Regarding the 1930 note, China adopted the customs gold unit in 1930 as the standard for customs payments. It was defined as equal to forty cents in U.S. terms. Despite their name, customs gold units were actually backed by silver and were legal tender for paying import duties.

1943 PHILIPPINES BOHOL EMERGENCY CERTIFICATE - ISSUED BY EXILED GOVERNMENT

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 434)

On May 22, 1942, Japanese occupation forces established garrisons at Tagbilaran, the capital and Guindulman where they operated manganese mines. On January 9, 1943, resistance officers and provincial officials who have not surrendered established a "free" government with Conrado D. Marapao as Governor. Just prior to the surrender, Philippines President Manuel Quezon had authorized Bohol to issue 150,000 pesos in emergency currency. This authority was the basis for printing currency to finance the free government and the resistance force. In June 1943, radio contact was established with President Quezon who authorized an additional 200,000 pesos, followed by an additional 1,000,000 pesos in September. The printing took place at the Municipality of Carmen. Notes were printed in black on manila paper of varying thickness. This is a beautiful example of that emergency money and is in crisp condition with just a single light vertical crease.

SIX (6) JAPANESE INVASION MONEY - VERY NICE GROUP

This lot consists of a 10 Centavos (Philippines), Half Rupee, One Rupee, Five Rupees, Ten Rupees, and 100 Rupees. All are in nice fine to very fine condition. Japanese Invasion Money was currency issued by the Japanese Military Authority in lieu of and in replacement of local currency after the conquest of a nation in World War II. All the Rupee notes in this group are from Burma. The Japanese invaded Burma in January 1942. The Japanese held Burma until 1944. In 1942 the Japanese issued paper script currency of 1, 5 and 10 cents and ¼, ½, 1, 5 and 10 Rupees. The 100 Rupee note was added in 1944.

1985 MEXICO 100 PESOS WORLD CUP SOCCER ONE TROY OUNCE SILVER COIN - ORIGINAL BOX - ONLY 9,006 MINTED

1986 PROOF MEXICAN LIBERTAD - 1 TROY OZ .999 FINE - ORIGINAL PACKAGING - LOW MINTAGE OF 30,000

One troy ounce proof Libertad. Minted at the Casa de Moneda de Mexico, the oldest mint in the Western Hemisphere. The mintage was limited to no more than 30,000, although we do not know how many were actually made. Comes in its original box with certificate of authenticity.

1958 GHANA PROOF 10 SHILLING - .925 SILVER - IN ORIGINAL BOX - LOW MINTAGE OF 11,000

Ghana hasn't produced a lot of coins, but 1958 was the ONLY year Ghana made Standard Coinage (British units). For auction is a 1958 10 Shilling proof coin in its original box. Only 11,000 were produced, and this is the first one we have seen. Features the bust of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the leader of Ghana from 1952 to 1966. This coin contains .8411 troy ounces of pure silver. 1958 GHANA PROOF SET - 7 COINS - IN ORIGINAL BOX - NICELY TONED - LOW MINTAGE

Lot # 34 (Sale Order: 33 of 434)

This is the only year that Ghana produced coins in British units. No more than 11,000 were produced, so these must be scarce. We haven't seen one before. This is a beautiful set with nice original patina in its original green box. Obviously well cared for over the years. Only the 10 Shilling coin contains silver (.925), but it weighs in at a hefty .8411 troy ounces of pure silver. Each coin features the bust of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the leader of Ghana from 1952 to 1966.

1960 SOUTH AFRICA 1/4 P (ANACS MS65 RED) + 1965 JAMAICA ONE PENNY (ANACS MS64)

1970 ECUATORIAL GUINEA 100 PESETAS - PROOF .999 SILVER COIN - GOYA'S NUDE MAJA

Probably produced to encourage coin collecting by young men, this proof silver 100 Pesetas features Goya's famous nude Maja. Comes with its original case and document. Composed of .999 silver and contains .643 troy ounces of pure silver. Limited mintage of only 30,000.

1976 BARBADOS PROOF SET - BEAUTIFUL 8-COIN SET - IN ORIGINAL PACKAGING

Beautiful proof set that was actually struck by the Franklin Mint under authorization of the Government of Barbados. Gorgeous coins, each featuring a nautical theme. In its original box with all the paperwork. Coins are still sealed in plastic. Only 11,929 were minted. The issue price was $55, and this set is valued in Krause for $40.

There are a suprising number of collectors of elongated coins, and these are nice ones. There is an elongated Florida state quarter from the 2005 F.U.N. 50th Anniversary Convention, a 1991 Persian Gulf War elongated penny, and a 2007 68th Anniversary Central States Numismatic Society show in St. Louis. All are in pristine condition.

TWO OLD DENVER MINT POSTCARDS FROM 1924 and 1940

Normally we don't sell postcards in our coin auctions, but since these feature the Denver Mint, we made an exception. Two postcards featuring the Denver Mint, one is dated 1924 and features the "United States Mint and State Capitol in Denver, Colo.", and the other is dated 1940 with an updated view of the Mint surrounded by 40's vintage cars. Both have been used and are in average condition. Unusual.

Nineteen blue Whitman albums. Four of them contain coins, and we are selling them just as we received them. There is a Lincoln cent set 1941-1966 that is nearly complete (missing 1955) with several additional cents added. A second similar album contains approximately 20 mostly Memorial cents. The 1909-1940 Lincoln cent book contains 17 wheat cents. Finally, the Jefferson nickel book contains about 35 nickels between 1939 and 1961.

Pair of slabbed coins. First is a 1960 Large Date cent graded Proof 69 Deep Cameo by ICG. Second is a 1970-D Roosevelt Dime graded MS70 by Star Grading Service (SGS). While we can attest to the veracity of ICG, we are not familiar with SGS, so we advise bidders to examine the coin and make their own determination of grade.

Both of these 1943-S cents exhibit strong doubling on the date and mintmark. Very unusual. Both coins are AU to near unc. Nice opportunity, as these could be discovery coins.

1,350 ASSORTED WHEAT CENTS

Large group of wheats. The consignor states that there are 1,350. We did not count them but we agree that there are a lot of wheats here. A random pull of coins revealed a nice assortment with most dated in the 1940's and 1950's. If sold online, this will be shipped in a flat rate box which will cost about $10 without insurance.

Only 27,600 proof 1942-P silver war nickels were minted. This is a beautiful example that appears undergraded by PCI. They call it PR63 perhaps for the light haze or toning spot on the shoulder. Proof war nickels are scarce.

Beautiful brilliant war nickel. Graded MS66 by NGC. This came from the well-known "Omaha Bank Hoard" - denoted on the NGC holder - that consisted of several thousand rolls of coins hand-picked for gem quality by a collector who wished to remain anonymous. The collection covered about a 50 year period, from the early 1930s to about 1980.
