Lock mechanism engraved with scrollpatterns and borders. Engraved steel backplate and triggerguard. Walnuthalf-stock with carving around barrel tang. Steel barrel band and partialsteel buttplate with engraved tang. Wooden ramrod. Provenance on4-inch by 2-inch paper attached to left side of buttstock and varnishedover. Provenance states that the rifle is the property of H. F. Mustainof Kentucky and that “This Spanish Fowling Piece was willed to me byCol William Piatt of the U.S. Army in 1832. It was presented to him byGen. Riano at the Battle of New Orleans.” This statement was sworn to byWilliam Piatt on Nov 26. 1892 in Woodland Station, Hart CountyKentucky. Attested to by W. P. Elegant lowrelief curve extended from main scroll and continuedbeneath up to left edge of cheekpiece. Low reliefsemi-floral border to rear ramrod ferrule, continuedparallel to ramrod as groove on each side up tofore-end. Fine, handsomely and elegantly semi-reliefengraved brass mountings with rococo flower andborder motifs, the Germanic triggerguard and sideplatetypical of parts of the period shipped in fromGermany. Bottom of foreend with 5 1/16-inch long and 11/8-inch wide brass escutcheon withlengthy engraved inscription: “Purchasedby H.B. Harmer/Near/Marshall’s Island/ on the Delaware River/fromElizabeth F. Hinkle daughter of PhilipHinkle/The Son of Joseph Hinkle and Becky Marshall-hiswife/who was the daughter of Edward Marshall.” Condition: Very good. Metal showing mellow age patina throughout with light pitting around breech and on lock. Fine hairline crack repair on buttstock including around heel of buttplate.
