Attributed to Chester Harding: Portrait of a Woman

Lot # 103A (Sale Order: 181 of 690)

Attributed to Chester Harding (American 1792-1866)Attributed: Portrait of a Woman oil on canvas unsigned framed.

Chester Harding was born in 1792 in Conway Massachusett. In 1818 he was introduced to portraiture by an itinerant artist named Nelson. Largely self-taught he achieved some success before moving to Kentucky where he he met Matthew Jouett a slightly older artist working in the manner of Gilbert Stuart. Over the next few years Harding painted in Kentucky Ohio Missouri and Washington D.C. traveling to Philadelphia for two months of study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Business was good and he received particular notoriety for a likeness of the 90-year-old Daniel Boone.

In 1823 Harding spent six months in Boston where he received an astounding reception and more commissions than he could carry out. For the rest of his life Harding's career was centered in Boston although he made his home in Springfield Massachusetts beginning in 1830. He became an important and visible force in the Boston art world largely through his ownership of a studio building that was the site of many important exhibitions. Much of each year was also spent on the road executing portraits in New York Louisiana Kentucky and points in between. In all he is thought to have painted over 1000 portraits.

School of Hilma af Klint: Abstract Composition

Lot # 111A (Sale Order: 194 of 690)

School of Hilma af Klint (Swedish, 1862-1944) School of: Oil on canvas, unsigned, framed. Hilma af Klint was one of earliest abstract painters. Stemming from her younger sister’s death in 1880, Klint had a lifelong interest in spirituality and mysticism, a reoccurring theme in her work. In particular, Klint was inspired by the Theosophical Movement, an occultist form of thinking that draws on ideas from older European philosophies and Asian religions that believed in “High Masters”, deceased, enlightened spirits who were to revive an ancient mystical religion that would eclipse all other religions. From early in her career, Klint alleged that her set of Temple Paintings, a suite of 193 paintings painted between 1906 and 1915 that were inspired by a conversation with a “High Master”, was made with intervention with these spirits. However, once these paintings were completed, the spirits no longer intervened in her art and the roots of her abstract expressionist career began.
