Manner of Hilma af Klint: Abstract Compostion

Lot # 129A (Sale Order: 229 of 690)

Manner of Hilma af Klint (Swedish, 1862-1944):Oil on canvas, unsigned, framed. Hilma af Klint was one of earliest abstract painters. Stemming from her younger sister’s death in 1880, Klint had a lifelong interest in spirituality and mysticism, a reoccurring theme in her work. In particular, Klint was inspired by the Theosophical Movement, an occultist form of thinking that draws on ideas from older European philosophies and Asian religions that believed in “High Masters”, deceased, enlightened spirits who were to revive an ancient mystical religion that would eclipse all other religions. From early in her career, Klint alleged that her set of Temple Paintings, a suite of 193 paintings painted between 1906 and 1915 that were inspired by a conversation with a “High Master”, was made with intervention with these spirits. However, once these paintings were completed, the spirits no longer intervened in her art and the roots of her abstract expressionist career began.
Dimensions: 16.15 x 15" (canvas), 18.25 x 17.25 (frame)br>

Emil Filla: Still Life

Lot # 136 (Sale Order: 242 of 690)

Emil Filla (Czech, 1882-1953) attributed: oil on canvas, signed bottom right, framed. Czech artist Emil Filla aligned himself with a variety of movements, including fauvism, expressionism, and cubism. As a member of Osma (the group of eight), a collective that drew inspiration from the Paris fauves and maintained a close relationship with the German group Die Brucke, Filla initially painted in an over exaggerated, colorful manner. By 1910, after familiarizing himself with the work of Picasso and Braque, he made the transition to cubism, particularly cubist still lifes. After a split in 1911 with the Manes Union of Fine Arts, a group which promoted Czech Cubism, Filla founded the cubist-oriented group, The Group of Visual artists and transitioned from cubist painting to cubist sculpture. By 1920 he rejoined the Manes, with whom he began to further experiment with cubism

Leonard Nelson: Abstract

Lot # 141 (Sale Order: 250 of 690)

Leonard Nelson (American, 1912-1993) Manner of: Abstract. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, framed.

A school of art has been born in Philadelphia, aptly called The Philadelphia School. This is not a school of education but a fine-arts movement led by a group of gifted Center City artists. The group's work is defined by tonal, atmospheric, and perceptual qualities suggesting landscape. The leader of this movement was Leonard Nelson.

Through the 1950s and 1960s, Nelson would perfect his vision of landscape color field. Historically, the aesthetic of the color-field style is indigenous to Philadelphia. Its inspiration appears drawn from Mark Rothko's field paintings and bands of color. (The genre of color field followed, and in some cases overlapped, abstract expressionism.) Manner of Nelson taught at the Moore College of Art for thirty years.
