Attributed to Chester Harding: Portrait of a Woman

Lot # 187 (Sale Order: 327 of 690)

Chester Harding (American 1792-1866)Attributed: Portrait of a Woman oil on canvas unsigned framed.

Chester Harding was born in 1792 in Conway Massachusett. In 1818 he was introduced to portraiture by an itinerant artist named Nelson. Largely self-taught he achieved some success before moving to Kentucky where he he met Matthew Jouett a slightly older artist working in the manner of Gilbert Stuart. Over the next few years Harding painted in Kentucky Ohio Missouri and Washington D.C. traveling to Philadelphia for two months of study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Business was good and he received particular notoriety for a likeness of the 90-year-old Daniel Boone.

In 1823 Harding spent six months in Boston where he received an astounding reception and more commissions than he could carry out. For the rest of his life Harding's career was centered in Boston although he made his home in Springfield Massachusetts beginning in 1830. He became an important and visible force in the Boston art world largely through his ownership of a studio building that was the site of many important exhibitions. Much of each year was also spent on the road executing portraits in New York Louisiana Kentucky and points in between. In all he is thought to have painted over 1000 portraits.

Banksy: Di-Faced Tenners (Ten Pound Notes).

Lot # 190 (Sale Order: 333 of 690)

Banksy (British, b. 1974): Two Di-Faced Tenners (Ten Pound Notes) from Nottinghill Carnival (2004). These 2 notes have the following hallmarks: Diana's face replacing the Queen's; 'Banksy of England', instead of 'Bank of England'; the POW initials as well as DI-FACED CURRENCY information on the bottom left side; the serial number CA70 364470, and the words 'trust no one' on the reverse side. A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies these notes.

Mostly known for his stencil and installation work, Banksy turned his attention to his native London's bills. In 2004, the artist printed one million pounds worth of his Di Faced Tenner. The play on the term "defaced" (di-faced) comes from the fact that Banksy substituted the Queen's face with that of Princess Diana. The altered bill, which also features the words "Banksy of England" were dropped into a crowd at the 2004 Notting Hill Carnival and later that year, The Reading Festival

William Scott (British, 1913-1989), Attributed/Maner of: Abstract Still Life with Bottles, Oil on Canvas, signed bottom right. Framed.

William Scott is perhaps the best known artist of Ulster in the twentieth century. His work combines the tenets of abstraction with figural iconography and aims to explore the forms found in daily life. When asked about his work, Scott noted, “I am an abstract artist in the sense that I abstract. I cannot be called non-figurative while I am still interested in the modern magic of space, primitive sex forms, the sensual and the erotic, disconcerting contours, the things of life.”
