John Marin: View of Venice from Murano
Lot # 300 (Sale Order: 477 of 690)
During his sojourn in Europe Marin honed what would become his signature style- watercolor with linear elements, varying translucency and opacity, and near pure abstraction, done in an almost expressionistic style.
In 1908, photographer and prominent member of the Stieglitz Circle, Edward Steichen, saw Marin’s exhibition at Salon d’Automne and arranged for Marin to exhibit next at Stieglitz’s 291 Gallery, an incubator and gallery for some of the most influential American modern artists. Later that year, Stieglitz, impressed by Marin’s initial showing, visited Marin at his Paris studio, beginning what would become a lifelong friendship and professional relationship.
Upon permanently returning to the United States in 1910, Marin fortified his relationship with Stieglitz, who was willing to champion watercolor in an era when it was considered inferior to oil, and gained success, exhibiting annually for the rest of his career at Stieglitz’s galleries. He settled down in New Jersey with his wife, maintaining a summer home in Maine after 1914, where he drew inspiration for his most marketable works: his gestural watercolors of New York’s architecture and Maine’s rural landscape.
This piece is rather peculiar, being that it is a pastel when an estimated 2500 out of nearly 3000 works are watercolors.Although he predominantly documented the cities he visited through etchings, it was not uncommon for him to paint en plein air, an idea he begun during his travels in Europe that he would carry over into his successful career in the United States. br>6 x 9" paper, 12 1/2 x 15 3/4" frame

Paul Gaugiun: Taaroa
Lot # 313 (Sale Order: 489 of 690)
This drawing appears to come from a sketchbook that Gauguin kept during his first trip to Tahiti. This sketchbook, Carnet de Tahiti, “was a small volume of 130 leaves measuring 17 x 11 cm. of which twenty-nine were blank and the others covered with innumerable sketches in black and white or heightened with watercolours; they date from Gauguin’s first stay in Tahiti and reveal the most intimate and spontaneous aspect of his activity as a draughtsman” (Jean Leymarie, Gauguin: Watercolors, Pastels, Drawings, New York, 1989, p. 48). It has been suggested that this drawing was a study for Le Repas, a large oil painting now in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay. Drawings from Carnet de Tahiti can be seen as some of Gauguin first works of the wonders which surrounded him in Tahiti

John Singer Sargent: Porta della Carta of the Doge's Palace
Lot # 320 (Sale Order: 496 of 690)
John Singer Sargent visited and painted in Venice many times. While he is most known for his luminous watercolors of Venice, he also produced a number of oil paintings of the city. In 1913, he painted a view of the Courtyard of the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, which is now in the collection of the Harvard Art Museums. The painting which is the subject of this analysis is an oil painting of the Porta della Carta of the Doge’s palace.
While Sargent often cropped his landscapes and chose unusual points-of-view to accentuate height of buildings or depth in the picture plane, both of these paintings are fairly straight-on compositions. As can be seen in the photos above, the courtyard painting is more detailed, but in both paintings the architecture has been softened and simplified. This aspect of the paintings also relates to Sargent’s oil paintings from previous years. For this example, his 1879 oil painting Alhambra Patio shows similar treatment of details to both of the paintings above.
The method of painting and the style and shape of the brush strokes in all three paintings is very similar, showing a consistency which spans 34 years. All three paintings were created over a dark under-painting. All three are painted with consecutively heavier (thicker) paint, with the highlights being the heaviest. All three have subtle color variations in both the darks and the light areas. All three have a dominant use of dry-brush technique to create atmosphere and blur details.
The paintings also show an impressionistic use of brush-bristle texture in the heavier painted large areas, which corresponds in each to the upper quarter of the painting: The sky and dome in Porta della Carta; The sky in Courtyard of the Scuola; The upper wall of Alhambra Patio.
Several edge-details of each painting are also similar: The ragged edges of the main archways in Alhambra Patio and Porta della Carta; the abbreviated details shown in the bases of walls in Porta della Carta and Courtyard of the Scuola; the way, in each painting, that the artist avoided creating hard edges when painting light areas next to dark ones (There is usually a buffer area of a mid-value color or grey, not covered by the lightest paint, separating them.)
Thickly painted skies can also be seen in Sargent’s two c.1905 paintings of Moab and the Dead Sea. br>14 1/2 x 21" canvas, 19 3/4 x 26 1/2" frame
