Emil Filla: Oval Still Life, 1923

Lot # 59 (Sale Order: 101 of 690)

Emil Filla (Czech, 1882-1953) Attributed/ In the Manner of: Oil on board, signed and dated 1923 bottom right, shipping sticker dated 1924 verso, oval stretcher with rope frame.

Czech artist Emil Filla aligned himself with a variety of movements, including fauvism, expressionism, and cubism. As a member of Osma (the group of eight), a collective that drew inspiration from the Paris fauves and maintained a close relationship with the German group Die Brucke, Filla initially painted in an over exaggerated, colorful manner. By 1910, after familiarizing himself with the work of Picasso and Braque, he made the transition to cubism, particularly cubist still lifes. After a split in 1911 with the Manes Union of Fine Arts, a group which promoted Czech Cubism, Filla founded the cubist-oriented group, The Group of Visual artists and transitioned from cubist painting to cubist sculpture. By 1920 he rejoined the Manes, with whom he began to further experiment with cubism.br>21x25 inches, with rope edging.

After Odilon Redon: Surreal Portrait

Lot # 68A (Sale Order: 118 of 690)

After Odilon Redon (1840-1916) Manner of: Surreal Portrait, charcoal on paper, with certificate of authenticity from van Hassel Galeri, Rotterdam, Holland, verso bears the stamp of Collection Simon, Paris, signed.

NOTE: From The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art, website: After Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler returned to Paris from his Swiss exile during World War I, he opened the Galerie Simon, which was named after his partner and financial backer André Cahen, known as André Simon. The business existed from September 1920 until 1940, when it was closed due to World War II.

Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler ran the Galerie Kahnweiler until World War I. After the war, his stock was seized by the French state and liquidated at a series of four sequestration sales held at the Hôtel Drouot between 1921 and 1923. Kahnweiler was prohibited by French law from purchasing any works of his former collection in the four sales, so he formed what is known as the “Kahnweiler syndicate,” with the German dealer Alfred Flechtheim, Swiss collector Hermann Rupf, his brother Gustav Kahnweiler, Louise Leiris, and Hans Forchheimer. The syndicate bid under the pseudonym “Grassat”and the works it purchased were for Kahnweiler's new gallery. Among their purchases was Braque’s Still Life with Clarinet (Bottle and Clarinet) Manner of, which they acquired at the second sale for 380 francs.

In contrast to his modest prewar gallery, Kahnweiler’s Galerie Simon, located at 29 bis, rue d’Astorg, was comprised of four light-filled large exhibition halls. The location had been secured with the help of the artist Amédée Ozenfant, with whom Kahnweiler had become acquainted in Switzerland during the war, and Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, the painter and architect who would change his name to Le Corbusier that year, who rented a neighboring space from the same landlord.

Bernd and Hilla Becher: Kuhlturm (Cooling Tower), Hagen-Haspe, Germany

Lot # 72 (Sale Order: 125 of 690)

Bernd (1931-2007) and Hilla Becher (1934-2015): Kuhlturm (Cooling Tower), Hagen-Haspe, Germany, 2002, Documenta11 edition of 60, [Kühlturm (Cooling Tower),Stahlwerk Hagen-Haspe 1969]. Triplex offset print on ikonorex board, Edition 49/60, signed and numbered under image. Unframed.

The photography of the Bechers is a documentary one. The buildings, mostly industrial manufacturing plants, regarded by the artists as "anonymous sculptures", appear isolated without the workers. They are monuments in and of themselves, and at the same time symbols of functionality. In typological series, constructions or devices with the same functions and comparable structures are analyzed, always under the same - objective - shooting circumstances, in absolute abstention from an expressive treatment.

Bernd and Hilla Becher have exhibited widely since 1963. Solo exhibitions include Photographic Collection/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne (2016, 2013, 2010, 2006), Museum of Modern Art, New York (2008), Nationalgalerie Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2005), Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2004), K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf (2003) and XLIV Venice Biennale (1990). Group exhibitions include Barbican Art Gallery, London (2014), Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2014, 2004), Museum of Modern Art, New York (2013), Guggenheim Museum, New York (2010), Nationalgalerie Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2008), The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (2005), UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2004), Tate Modern, London (2004, 2003) and Documenta XI, VII, VI, V, Kassel, (2002, 1982, 1977, 1972).
