VICTORIAN BRITISH VELLUM DOCUMENTS WILLS LEASES

Lot # 2138 (Sale Order: 137 of 822)      

A collection of 5 vellum documents dating between 1873 and 1895. The first two documents are leases or Indentures dated August 23 1873 involving Nehemiah Searoyd for adjacent properties at 1 and 3 Crossley Street, Islington. The third document is a Covenant dated March 25th 1881 between William Ward (1st Earl of Dudley) and William Elwell and Robert Griffen Walker concerning mining rights. The fourth document is an official mortgage contract initially dated August 13th 1888, with official seals dated May 29th 189. The mortgage contract is between Francis Augustus Bevan and Henry Hill ast "Mortgagors" and the "Mortgagees" Robert Barclay, Joseph Herbert Tritton and Wilfrid Arthur Bevan. In 1896 the bank Barclay, Bevan, Bening and Tritton became known as Barclay and Co. Francis August Bevan thus became the last Senior Partner at the private bank and the first Chairman of the new bank. The fifth document is the "The Will and Codicils of William Henry Luard Pattison dated August 24th 1895. All 5 documents are in good condition and bear the proper signatures and seals expected for official Victorian legal documents.

One of the letters from May is written on the back of Shaarei Zedek Hospital leaterhead. One letter (in German) from Rabbi Eli Munk dated June 8, 1939. One letter (in Hebrew) from the Chief Rabbinate of Palestine-Eretz-Isreal on letterhead with seal and signature. And one letter or note from the Council of the Sephardic Community, Jerusalem dated October 16, 1944. All documents are in good to very good condition,

ADVERTISERS COOKBOOKS FROM WWI & WWII & THE 1950S

A collection of 20 cookbooks and recipe books both directly from food product advertisers and from civic organizations with paid advertising. The oldest is a copy of the 1917 "Gold Medal Flour Cook Book" published by Washburn-Crosby Co. The collection also includes the 1955 "Gold Medal Jubilee" recipe book still in its original mail envelope from 1956. A "Sweets and Meats Directory" from the Order of the Eastern Star, West Palm Beach, Florida Chapter (N0 145). Newspaper clippings in the book date from 1941 and includes hundreds of local Florida business advertisements. Advertisers represented include: Quaker Sugar, Sunbeam (1962), Fleischmann's (1920), Royal Baking Powder (1925), Brer Rabbit Molasses, Betty Crocker (1943)Borden's Eagle Brand Condensed Milk (1952), Women's Home Companion (1940), Knox Gelatine (1952), Rick's Instant Cocoa, Durkee's Spices, Sun-Maid Raisins, "Treasured Recipes of the Old South" (Marie Kimball 1941). The collection also includes two recipe books directly related to WWII and rationing: "Health for Victory, Meal Planning Guide December 1943" as "Contributed in the Interest of the National Wartime Nutrition Program" by "Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co." And from General Mills "Recipes for Today" Dated 1943. All the books and booklet are in good condition. Color covers and advertisements remain crisp and clear. There is differential preservation with some of the paper.

NASA STS 75 LAUNCH COUNTDOWN CONSOLE LOGBOOK VOL 2

The NASA G-1 WATER Console Logbook, Volume 2 of a total of 5 as revised on February 2, 1996. Space Shuttle Mission STS-75 launched on February 22, 1996. This volume was used during the STS-75 Launch Countdown procedures on February 19, 1996 (noted on page 2). The launch was scrubbed on that day. The Launch Countdown volumes are the detailed, moment by moment, task by task checklists covering Shuttle preparation and launch. This volume (Vol 2) covers launch operations and procedures up to T-5 minutes. The volume is printed and in its original 3-ring binder just as it was used for the launch prep and in the same condition as it was when it served as the working Launch Countdown checklist for Lockheed Martin Space Operations Launch Control at Kenedy Space Center on February 19, 1996.

1904 BETSY ROSS MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION CERTIFICATE

Lot # 2149 (Sale Order: 148 of 822)      

American Flag House and Betsy Ross Memorial Association Membership Certificate No. 33762 Issued to Elizabeth Merion Beavis in 1904. The secretary of the association at the time was named John Quincy Adams (signature on certificate). The certificate was likely originally framed, but has been rolled and folded since. There are paper condition issues however every aspect of the certificate is legible.

EARLY HISTORY OF THE BICYCLE EXCHANGE CAMBRIDGE

A large collection of materials of and relating to The Bicycle Exchange founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Benjamin F. Olken in 1934. The lot include three scrapbooks chronicalling every aspect of the store from 1934 to the 1960s, including ads, sample ads, proofs, and newspaper articles. The collection also include a large folio containing newspaper pages relating to the opening of the store in 1936. Newspapers curated include pages from the Harvard Crimson (March 16 and 31, 1937); an edition of the Harvard Summer School News (Volume 1 No. 2 Friday July 9, 1937), Pages from the Cambridge Tribune (Friday May 28, 1937), numerous pages from the Boston Globe (1937, 1940). The archived newspapers all relate to the popularization of bicycling as a excersie and recreation, as well as articles about and ads from the Bicycle Exchange. Other items in the collection include jigsaw puzzles relating to bicycles, art prints featuring bikes, five issues of "American Bicyclist and Motorcyclist (1964 to 1969), including the 1965 profile of Ben Olken as incoming president of the NBDA (National Bicycle Dealers Association). The collection is a fascinating examination of the birth and expansion of the bicycle industry in United States through WWII and the Baby Boom. The collection is in gerally good condition, with some of the older newspaper pages showing paper loss.
