DAYAK MANDAU 19TH CENTURY HEADHUNTER SWORD

Lot # 2403 (Sale Order: 401 of 822)      

19th century elaborate Headhunting Ceremonial knife/short sword (24.5") from Borneo of the Dayak people. The blade is heavily worn and pitted, but still somewhat sharp and is inlaid with brass. The blade's spine has traces of the scroll work traditionally on the blades. The pommel is antler/bone carved with zoomprophic figures with hair. The pommel has a repair that appears contemporary or at least early. The scabbard has a grooved bone chape, tarsier fur wrap, and three intricately woven fiber wraps. The scabbard has a handwoven strap and attached to it is a small disk of glazed ceramic (trophy?)

DAYAK MANDAU BORNEO CARVED BONE SCABBARD

High quality, 20th century tourist piece mandau (ambang). Four bone panels are carved with Indonesian figures (one is a cyclops). Measures approximately 25" and has a few brass inlays. Wood hilt with some splitting and is missing the small whittling knife. Great wall-hanging piece.

DHA-HMYAUNG LATE 19TH CENTURY BURMESE DAGGER

Lot # 2410 (Sale Order: 408 of 822)      

A small traditional Dha-hmyaung knife from Burma or Siam (Myanmar). Blade and scabbard together measure 8-1/4 inches (21 cm). The blade measures 4 inches (10.2 cm), and the scabbard measures 5-1/8 inches (13 cm). Handle and scabbard are constructed in traditional fashion from hand hammered silver sheeting on wood, wrapped by silver wire. The blade is sharpened on a single edge and remains razor sharp. The Dha-hmyaung is in good to very good condition.

MIDDLE EASTERN JAMBIYA JANBIYA DAGGER

Lot # 2411 (Sale Order: 409 of 822)      

A jambiya dagger and leather scabbard with a distinctive horn or antler handle. The blade and scabbard together measure 11 inches in gross length (28 cm). The curved blade measures 7 inches in gross length (17.8 cm). The horn handle is carved with parallel grooves along the length. The blade has a distinct medial ridge and is sharpened on both edges. The leather scabbard is unadorned on one side and is decorated with incised geometric patterns and punctations on the reverse. In form and character the blade is similar to Jambiya associated with Yemen. This is decidedly not a tourist item but rather appears to be a functioning working weapon that may have seen hundreds of years of use. There are some rust spots on the blade, however the blade remains very sharp. Blade and scabbard are in good condition.

NORTH AFRICAN FLYSSA DAGGER AND LEATHER SCABBARD

Lot # 2412 (Sale Order: 410 of 822)      

A distinctive flyssa from north Africa, most likely Algeria. Blade and handle together measure 17-3/4 inches 45.2 cm). The blade from the tang measures 13 inches (33 cm). The blade has two fullers one extending 3-1/2 inches along the spine and the other extending 7-1/2 inches roughly along the center of the blade. The fullers ar only on the right-hand side of the blade with geometric hand-incised patterns between. The handle is comprised of two horn or antler scales affixed to the tang with three metal pins. This is likely a replacement handle. The right hand scale has a crack at the center metal pin which also has a partial mistake drill hole. A fourth hole is drilled through both scales but without a pin. The leather scabbard has two copper rings at the hiltand an incised herringbone-like pattern on one face. The blade remains very sharp and in good condition.

OTTOMAN KINDJAL DAGGER MIDDLE EASTERN JAMBIYA

Lot # 2413 (Sale Order: 411 of 822)      

Possibly late 19th century, Ottoman Kindjal dagger. Blade and handle together measure 14-1/2 inches (37 cm). The blade measures 9-1/2 inches from the tang (24 cm), is sharpened on both edges and has a hand-incised geometric pattern in the center of both sides of the blade. There is not a visible medial ridge, however the blade is thicker at center where a defined ridge would reside. The leather on wood scabbard has a woven pattern of red and green leather strips. The handle is comprised of two carved horn or antler scalesaffixed to the tang with three metal pins. The blade remains very shard and in good condition. The handle is likely not original but replaced historically. The leather of the sheath has some missing pieces and is slightly brittle.

SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES MORO BARONG

Lot # 2414 (Sale Order: 412 of 822)      

An example of the distinctive Barong knife of the southern Philippines and traditional to the islands of Tausung, Sinama, and Yakan. Blade and handle together measure 21-1/2 inches (54.5 cm), and the leaf-shaped blade is 2-3/4 inches (7 cm) wide at the center (widest). The blade is thick and heavy, measuring 1/4 inch thick at the hilt and weighs 2 lbs. The curved handle is made from carved and polished wood with the pommel area taking on a traditional parrot-head shape. The blade end of the handle is wrapped with braided cordage and fine wire. An ill-fitting traditional wood scale scabbard accompanies the Barong. Ample wood glue is evident along the joins between the two scales of the scabbard. Glue is also evident along the final fabric wrap of the handle. The blade remains very sharp and in good condition.

A Badik Macassar dagger also called a Badik Sari from the Macassar people of southern Sulawesi, Indonesia. The blade and scabbard total length is 11 inches (28 cm). The blade measures 8 inches from the hilt (20.3 cm). The blade has an embossed vine pattern on the right hand side and embossed script on the reverse. The blade is likely considerably older than the scabbard and handle which appear to be rather recent. The blade remains sharp and in good condition.

INTERNATIONAL SHORT SWORD LOT EUROPE AFRICA ASIA

Lot # 2422 (Sale Order: 420 of 822)      

A collection of three large daggers or short swords, one from north Africa, one from southeast Asia, and One from Germany. The German dagger is a presentation hunting society blade. The dagger measures 18 inches in total length. The blade bears the Carl Eickhorn maker's mark in use between 1935 and 1941. The North African piece has a highly carved wood scabbard with geometric patterns and carved lizzards and scorpions. The blade handle matches the scabbard. The "J" shape of the scabbard is typical of jambiya blades of the region, however this is a straight blade and does not quite fit the scabbard. Blade and handle together measure 19 inches. The southeast Asian piece was likely made in the Philippines and resembles a Moro Barong. However the blade more resembles that of a large Bowie knife attached to a Philippines style handle. Blade and handle together measure 21 inches in total length.

M 1860 LIGHT CALVARY SABER WITH SCABBARD

Lot # 2427 (Sale Order: 425 of 822)      

Similar but not exactly 1860, perhaps a private purchase authorized blade, at ricasso on one side two proof marks and a G on both sides, very good blade similar to a French issue with shortened blood groove, wood grip with no wire, scabbard has denting, had one saddle ring that is gone, and scabbard has been buffed. Overall length with scabbard 38 inches.
