19TH CENTURY NORTH AFRICAN ENGRAVED SWORD

Lot # 2434 (Sale Order: 432 of 822)

An antique sword from north Africa. The sword measures 38 inches (96.5 cm) in total length, with a 33 inch blade (83.8 cm). The hilt consists of a gross guard, handle and pommel cap, all made with hand-hammered brass on wood. The blade tapers from 1-3/4 wide (4.4 cm) to 1/2 inch (1.4 cm) wide at the rounded tip. Each face of the blade has three parallel fullers, with the center running the full length of the blade. The figures of similar but slightly different lions above two crescent shapes are engraved into either side of the blade at the end of the short fullers, ca. 6 inches from the cross guard. The scabbard is of incised leather with an incised brass sheath at the opening. The blade has a developed dark patina and a degree of pitting along the edges of the distal half. The pitting and patina are consistent with a date of ca 1850 to 1880 and the extent of the Ottoman Empire in North Africa. GERMAN IMPERIAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION DRESS DAGGER

Lot # 2451 (Sale Order: 449 of 822)

A highly etched, unsharpened blade, brass "clamshell" and cross guard assembly, with an elk horn grip. The grip has three attached brass acorns on the right-hand side and an ovate brass pommel cap. The right-hand side of the blade has an etched scene with a shooting target over crossed rifles on a leaf pattern at the ricasso, and then hounds in a forest in the center of the blade. One the reverse (left-hand side) the etched scene includes crossed swords and a forest scene with a male elk jumping over fencing. The blade measures 12 inches (30.5 cm) to the ricasso, 13-1/2 inches (34.5 cm) to the guard. On the left-hand side the ricasso bears the "ACS" mark with a balance indicative of Alexander Coppel GmbH (Alcoso), Solingen as the manufacturer. This specific mark was used from 1919 to 1936. The cross guard has stylized acorn brass finials. The dagger is in good condition and does not appear to have been sharpened. There is a differential wear pattern on the etching of both sides of the blade. This appears to be due to the top brass element of the scabbard which is loose and has rubbed the etching nearest the hilt. The scabbard is in poor condition with much of the outer polished leather degrading. and a diagonal cut visible in the leather.
