STONE TAINO VARIATION OF MACANA

Lot # 3172 (Sale Order: 172 of 343)      

Taino, variation of Macana. These were flat clubs usually made of hard wood as described by the Spanish. This unique example is made of a jasper like stone and may have been ceremonial. Top has zoomorphic face whose eyes and nose are pierced. Suspension hole is located at the bottom of the neck. On the left side of the blade is a relief carved long beaked bird whose bill curves around the bottom. On the right side is an embossed reclining zoomorph Possibly an heirloom. Crafted from jasper like stone. Measures 10.5 inches. Taino culture c600-1500 AD, Dominican Republic. TAINO ZOOMORPHIC MANATEE VOMIT SPATULA

Taino zoomorphic manatee rib vomit spatula. Hollow design on front likely symbolizing a cohoba receptacle. Arms and legs are carved on the base as well as a complex group of symbols including a vagina behind the legs. The face is a little worn, but still discernable. These were used for purging prior to ingesting cohoba. They were usually made of stone or shell. Taino culture c600-1500 AD, Dominican Republic.
