CIVIL WAR QUARTERMASTERS FILE BOX WITH DOCUMENTS

Lot # 2012 (Sale Order: 12 of 346)      

Civil War era Kreamer tin box decorated with patriotic motif and used as a file box for quartermasters documents. Contained in the box are over 40 requisition forms and other documents, many signed by Capt. Perley Peabody Pitkin, Quartermaster, 2nd VT INF, USV. Also included is a Civil War muster roll for Company D of the 54th New York Veteran Volunteer Regiment, dated 1865. Documents show typical yellowing of aged paper, with edge wear. Some in much better condition than others, but all legible. Tin box shows some wear to paint, but no significant dents or damage.

CIVIL WAR 36 STAR FLAG AND LETTER NAMED

Lot # 2013 (Sale Order: 13 of 346)      

Civil War 36 star Union flag measuring approximately 3.5 by 5 inches, and letter originally belonging to James Cunningham, who served in Company E., 30th Pennsylvania Infantry from June 1861, to May 1864, and subsequently serving in the 190th Pennsylvania Infantry, seeing action in Gettysburg defending is home in Lancaster County, PA. The letter is likely written by his brother, and marked "Nere Gettysburg" on front.

Sixth plate size tintype of Wilbur Searles of the 24th New York Volunteers, accompanied by a wartime dated envelope to Searles. Searles sustained a chest wound in the Battle of Antietam, and consequently discharged for disability. Items are accompanied by a copy of his service records from the National Archives.

Sixth-plate Civil War Ambrotype of an unnamed CSA Georgia infantryman. Soldier is donning simple nine button grey frock coat and typical accoutrements of a Georgia Confederate soldier. Mounted in embossed leatherette case of the period. Spine on case is missing, otherwise Ambrotype and case are both in very good condition, and provide an excellent example of Civil War history.

CIVIL WAR AMBRO UNIDENTIFIED CSA SOLDIER FLORIDA

Lot # 2018 (Sale Order: 18 of 346)      

Sixth plate early clear glass Ambrotype of an unidentified Civil War Confederate soldier, possibly Florida infantry. He is seated and the uniform is very plain with no trim, with a short grey 9 button jacket which features a slash pocket on either side of the breast, cloth epaulets and belt loops. This uniform most resembles uniforms worn by The 1st Florida Infantry, and also in the few other known images of Florida soldiers. Picture is housed in fully intact leatherette case, with minor light wear. Overall excellent example of a scarce Confederate ambrotype.

Sixth-plate ambrotype of unnamed Civil War Confederate soldier. Dressed in butternut trousers and coat. Black cord trims the collar, cuffs and down the front of the jacket. Appears to have a small pocket on either side of trousers as well which are also trimmed in black cord. Background is simple, with no backdrop or props. Framed in half leatherette case. Overall very good example of a characteristic CSA image.

Two sixth plate ruby ambrotypes of an early militia drum major and his wife. Drummer is dressed in frock with gilded trim and froggings, holding a Model 1850 foot officer's sword in his right hand, and a tassled ball top mace in his left. Both of the sharp, clear images are housed side by side in thermoplastic union case adorned with floral scroll designs on top. Both images and case are in excellent condition.

PRESIDENT ANDREW JOHNSON MASONIC APRON & SASH

Masonic sash and apron attributed to the 17th President of the United States, Andrew Johnson (1865 - 1869). Johnson initiated (May 1851), passed, and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Greeneville Lodge No. 119 (now No. 3), F. & A.M., Greeneville, Tennessee. Leather apron has blue velvet facings and silver bullion embroidery and tassels with a similarly designed neck sash. The apron is named to Johnson and gives the lodge details. There is also a typed information sheet with details of Johnson's Masonic history. Greeneville, Tennessee.
