JOHN F. KENNEDY PT-109 PATCH SENT TO HIS COUSIN

Lot # 2076 (Sale Order: 76 of 346)

Patch with accompanying letter from JFK cousin Marylou Connelly McCarthy, also copy material of Kennedy with PT-109 crew, Kennedy receiving the Navy & Marine Corp medal for Gallantry and a patch from the Carrier USS Kennedy CV 67, the grouping is framed 27 by 39 inches. The letter written in 1998 by Ms. McCarthy details her close relationship with Jack, Joe Jr. and sister Kathleen, it further details her being sent away to boarding school and her sadness in having been sent to Madames of the Sacred Heart Boarding School, JFK corresponded with her explaining he was none too happy of his location either, two paragraphs read, " Jack Kennedy was in the Solomon Islands at the time where he commanded a PT Boat during WWII. His service in the South Pacific on the PT-109 made us very proud of him. Upon hearing of his little cousin's dislike of boarding school, Jack sent me the PT patch from his uniform including it with a letter. He told me to wear his insignia on my school uniform and urged me to show courage. He reminded me about his current location and ended the note with the words "Mary, be brave little Kiddo, I am not so thrilled about where I am either". The patch is period correct, it is an unauthorized patch worn by enlisted crewman on the dress blue uniform on the left sleeve above rank insignia, beneath the patch a brass plaque describes this patch as being worn by Kennedy, it was clearly owned by Kennedy and it is documented they were often given as gifts, but being an officer, it would not have been worn as it is strictly an Enlisted patch only. A well provenanced piece of Kennedy memorabilia. This lot has a reserve.
