"Marked side of a wooden crate from Ernst Shackleton's 1907 Nimrod Antarctic Expedition. Piece measures 7.7 5x 11.5 x .75 inches in size and has the writing ""British Antarctic Expedition 1907"" written in faded black ink, with evidence of nail holes around the edges. In very good condition with minor surface wear. Item from the 1907-1909 Nimrod Expedition led by Ernst Shackleton. This item was recovered from Shackleton’s Cape Royds camp site by Ensign Earl Johnson from the USCGC Northwind during Operation Deep Freeze II in 1957. He and other crewmembers had the opportunity to visit the sites of Scott and Shakleton which had been nearly perfectly preserved by the sub 0 temperatures. It was recovered from Scott’s Cape Evans site by Ensign Earl Johnson from the USCGC Northwind during Operation Deep Freeze II in 1957 and can be seen photographed at the location it was found. He and other crew members had the opportunity to visit the sites of Scott and Shakleton which had been nearly perfectly preserved by the sub 0 temperatures. Johnson was passionate about the history surrounding the items and shared his findings with students and others throughout his life. It is a 2 pound container and measures 4 inches tall. Contents remain but are leaking slightly.
