Piece measures 7.7 5x 11.5 x .75 inches in size and has the writing ""British Antarctic Expedition 1907"" written in faded black ink, with evidence of nail holes around the edges. In very good condition with minor surface wear. Item from the 1907-1909 Nimrod Expedition led by Ernst Shackleton. This item was recovered from Shackleton’s Cape Royds camp site by Ensign Earl Johnson from the USCGC Northwind during Operation Deep Freeze II in 1957. Iron spike for chaining a team of sled dogs to the ice. Found attached to "six perfectly preserved dogs." Measures 22 1/2 inches in length and shows signs of being hammer...moreed on top and wear from being driven on the bottom. Has a length of chain measuring 22 inches in length. In very good condition. Spike is from the 1910-1912 Terra Nova Expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott. This item was recovered from Scott's camp site on Cape Evans by Ensign Earl Johnson from the USCGC Northwind during Operation Deep Freeze II in 1957. He and other crewmembers had the opportunity to visit the sites of Scott and Shakleton which had been nearly perfectly preserved by the sub 0 temperatures. Johnson was passionate about the history surrounding the items and shared his findings with students and others throughout his life. In his diary he mentions that when he pulled the spike from the ice, he found that it was attached to 6 dead but perfectly preserved dogs. ROBERT SCOTT ANTARCTICA EXPEDITION 1910 SALT JAR

"Glass salt jar from the 1910-1912 Terra Nova Expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott. Jar was recovered from Scott’s Cape Evans site by Ensign Earl Johnson from the USCGC Northwind during Operation Deep Freeze II in 1957. He and other crew members had the opportunity to visit the sites of Scott and Shakleton which had been nearly perfectly preserved by the sub 0 temperatures. The jar is in very good condition and measures 6.5 inches tall. Johnson was passionate about the history surrounding the items and shared his findings with students and others throughout his life. Johnson wrote a detailed diary and account of his time during Operation Deep Freeze II as well as many photographs.
