Description

Dark brown/gray patina, good bore, forearm held in place with a single steel band and spring and retaining screw, flip up rear sight graduated to 800 yards, barrel marked M1865 on top near breech, receiver marked Spencer Repeating Rifle Co Boston Mass Patd March 6 1860 in 3 lines, left side steel saddle ring and slide bar, wood stock and forearm show moderate/heavy handling. Late in the Civil War these little carbines became the most prevalent arms among the Union cavalry and with the Blakeslee cartridge box they became even more formidable as the trooper could carry between 70 and 91 rounds of ready to fire ammunition. Good condition. Antique.

Heavy brown oxidized patina obscuring all markings, fair bore, back action style lock with broken hammer screw, internal and concealed parts of action still show 50% case color, patch box on right side of butt stock holds an assortment of incorrect lead balls and caps, left side steel saddle ring and slide bar, wood stock shows heavy handling with large chip missing from toe. From 1861-1864 17728 of these carbines were purchased by the US and were carried by units such as the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th Ohio, 3rd West Va, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Union cavalry. Good condition. Silver/gray patina, fair bore, rotate barrel/breech 90 degrees to load and extract utilizing a 7 round tube magazine, tang marked Triplett & Scott Patent Dec 6 1864 in 2 lines, left side of receiver marked Meridian Manfg. Co Meridian Conn. in 2 lines and left side of breech marked Kentucky, flip up rear sight, 2 steel sling loops on butt stock 1 on toe and 1 on heel, wood stock and forearm show average handling with cracks on both sides of wrist. In early 1865 Kentucky ordered 5000 carbines for use by the Kentucky home guard to support General Sherman if needed. It's believed that these carbines did not arrive in time to see use during the Civil War. Good condition. Antique.

All though the patent was issued in 1862, Providence Tool was late getting production going and missed the Civil War, from 1865-1870's approx. 112,000 pieces were produced with most being exported.
