Jenk's (Ames) Eastman Alteration Mule Ear Percussion Carbine

Lot # 1295 (Sale Order: 300 of 363)      

.54, 25" bbl, NSN. gray/brown mottled patina, fair bore, inside top of loading gate lever is marked in two line 3 / 43, strong side hammer lock holds on half and full cock and is marked on lock plate in three lines N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS and JENK'S on tail, top of breech is unmarked, Eastman Alteration includes rifling the barrel, altering the loading aperture to oval, milling a small groove on top of loading gate to serve as a rear sight and adding a steel lanyard loop to trigger guard tail this carbine has all of these features except the lanyard ring has been removed with the steel mounting legs being machined flat with the trigger guard, brass furniture including 2 barrel bands each held with single screw, brass trigger guard and butt plate, wood stock shows average handling with large piece broken out at lock (included and could be glued back fairly easily) causing the lock to drop out (lock is also missing the nipple) left side of above trigger shows two script cartouches. Eastman purchased a quantity of these carbines from the US Navy in 1861 that he had then altered, most show the Navy markings on top of breech this example does not have those markings. Good condition. Antique.
