Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By Seymour Griffin

Lot # 251 (Sale Order: 251 of 711)

serial #536211, 30-06, 24" 9-16 dated barrel with a bright excellent bore which shows perhaps a few very widely scattered very light pits. The barreled action retains about 95-97% maker blue with the bolt body and handle showing light operational marks, the knob flattened and checkered on its underside, toning to silver. The bottom metal shows a bit more wear retaining perhaps 85% blue with numerous light scratches and handling marks also with some light oxidation. The rifle is stocked classic style without cheekpiece showing Griffin's pronounced comb flutes. There is a nice schnabel tip and a bone pistolgrip cap and the checkered steel buttplate shows light engraving at its widows peak giving a 13 1/2" length of pull. The stock itself rates very good plus with only light handling marks and dings from the years, showing an extremely tiny chip at the rear of the receiver tang. The grip features a wrap-over pattern with mullered borders, the checkering showing a few minor dings and flattened points while the forend has a wrap-around pattern, also with mullered borders. The rifle sports sling swivels and the left side of the stock just beneath the magazine cut-off has been inletted slightly by a later craftsman to allow the magazine cut-off to operate. The rifle is sighted with a modified Marbles insert in the original band and ramp with a Lyman long leaf receiver sight on the rear ring. This is a late rifle and is featured in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century, volume 2 where it is pictured in the chapter on Seymour Griffin (Mr. Petrov's style number 3). Overall an extremely nice "Bretton Hall Griffin" in a fine state of condition. (36650-88) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom 1903 Magazine Sporting Rifle By Fred Surkamer

Lot # 252 (Sale Order: 252 of 711)

serial #1262591, 30-06, 24" barrel with a bright excellent star gauged bore. The barreled action retains about 92-95% original blue, the loss is due primarily to even fading, with some light high edge and contact point wear and perhaps a light scratch here or there. The bolt body and extractor are mostly bright retaining some good original arsenal polish but also with some scattered light oxidation staining, the handle knob has been lightly flat-top checkered in circular panels top and bottom. Interestingly the entire bolt shroud has been replaced with a custom-milled color case-hardened example, no doubt made by Surkamer. It features an aperture sight screw-adjustable for elevation and windage by drift. As well it shows a right-of-shroud mounted bolt lock which locks the handle in the downward position when the bolt is in-battery and the striker is at cock. This precludes the bolt handle from accidentally opening slightly during hunting, which would result in a misfire at the fall of the striker, the bulk of the energy taken up closing the bolt handle. Upon the fall of the striker, the bolt lock is released and the handle is able to be actuated (currently it does not function fully, it would appear as though the very tip has broken off but certainly could be repaired if one wished). The bottom metal has faded primarily to a dull plum patina, the bow of the guard lightly sculpted and neatly fitted with a cross-bolt safety, to take the place of the missing safety from the custom bolt shroud. The rifle is stocked classic style without cheekpiece in a very nice grade of Circassian walnut. There are very nice checkered bordered panels at the grip and forearm, a thin line dividing the forearm panels. The rifle features a nice schnabel forend tip, blued steel gripcap, which is nicely engraved and has faded now to pewter, the length of pull to the grooved trapdoor buttplate is 13 1/4". The rifle is equipped with detachable sling swivel studs and is sighted with a banded sporting ramp front sight with knurled hood and the aforementioned shroud-mounted rear aperture. Really an interesting, innovative, and very nicely stocked rifle. The lines and dimensions are very pleasing and the wood shows some handsome grain figure. The screw slots show some minor damage but otherwise the rifle has no apologies. (36650-73) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Lovely Bob Emmons Custom Mauser Magazine Sporting Rifle

Lot # 253 (Sale Order: 253 of 711)

serial #749958, 270 Win, 22" light sporter weight barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely rifle retain about 98-99% fine satin blue. The bolt body and follower are very finely, very neatly jeweled and the action races have been honed bright; the left race shows some very superficial remnants of surface oxidation. The DWM action has had the charging clip guides removed and the rear ring neatly flattened and dressed. The action has been professionally drilled and tapped for telescopic sight bases and there is a custom long bolt handle affixed with three very nice teardrop-shaped checkered panels, raised-in-relief. The bolt shroud has been fitted with a wing type model 70-style safety and the bolt release thumb piece has been nicely wedged and finely checkered. The bottom metal features a hinged floorplate with inside-the-bow release. The gun is a beautifully stocked classic style in a lovely grade of English walnut. Stock features a flared left side cheekpiece with shadow line and features flawlessly checkered borderless panels at the grip with a wrap-around point pattern on the forearm. The stock itself rates excellent with a few very sparsely scattered light handling marks, the most mentionable on the left side in the area of the recoil crossbolt but overall the gun appears otherwise un-used. There is a nice ebony insert at the forend tip and the blued steel gripcap is skeletonized with a nicely bordered checkered center. The length of pull to the blued steel skeleton buttplate with checkered center is 13 5/8". There is a reinforcing crossbolt at the rear of the stock flats and a nicely inletted and shaped rear swivel base along the toeline, the barrel with a band-style base soldered ahead of the forend tip. The rifle is fitted with a commercial adjustable trigger. Sadly, Bob Emmons is no longer with us and there will be no more of these exquisite sporters from this talented gunmaker. Really a top-notch sporter weighing in at just under 7 pounds. (36652-35)

Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By James Howe

Lot # 254 (Sale Order: 254 of 711)

serial #1263110, 30-06, 24" 12-23 dated star-gauged barrel with a bright, about excellent bore which shows sharp rifling but with some minor frosting in the grooves, more prominent near the throat. The barreled action retains about 95-97% maker blue, showing even fading, some light handling marks and some sparsely scattered light oxidation. The bolt body shows light operational wear while the extractor is polished bright, with some minor oxidation staining. The bottom metal has faded primarily to a dark gray-brown, showing some surface abrasions and light scratches on the floorplate. The rifle is stocked classic style with a rounded left-side cheekpiece showing a nice shadow line. The stock is English walnut and rates very good plus to near excellent as very nicely refinished. The grip shows nice checkered panels with an accenting diamond at their leading edge, the forend with a wrap-around pattern, with three accenting diamonds. The rifle sports a horn forend tip and a hard rubber gripcap with a nice checkered and engraved trapdoor buttplate for a 13 1/4" length of pull. The underside of the barrel is star gauge numbered B489, also marked "EO, 23-150". The gun is sighted with a brass bead Lyman sight in the original armory banded ramp with a Lyman receiver sight in place on the rear bridge. The left side of the action has a Griffin & Howe-style base attached which supports a single lever ring set which shows some nice oakleaf engraving, clearly the work of Rudolph Kornbrath. The ring set supports a Carl Zeiss Zielklein telescopic sight with post and crosshair reticle and bright excellent optics. The scope itself rates about very good showing quite a bit of fading and some minor oxidation. It should be noted that the scope base is numbered "9" while the ring set is numbered "13", the ring set fitting very tightly. There is a tiny chip missing to the rear of the receiver tang, it is unobtrusive, the rear of the trigger has been neatly rounded and the bolt knob has been nicely checkered in dual panels on its underside. Really a super example by this gifted craftsman with lovely classic lines perfectly executed. (36650-43) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

The barrel, bolt and magazine tube retain 75-80% original blue finish with some thinning in a few spots, primarily the magazine tube, and scattered oxidation staining and some light scratches and handling marks as well. The frame retains 60% original blue finish with the carry point toned to pewter with some areas displaying a pewter-brown patina with several scratches and dings present. The lever and hammer still retain a few sections of vibrant case-hardened color however most of the surfaces are a pewter-brown patina with some light oxidation staining present. Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By Wundhammer

Lot # 256 (Sale Order: 256 of 711)

serial #623256, 30-06, 24" 2-16 dated barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains about 92% original blue, the loss is due primarily to even fading and light high edge wear, primarily at the muzzle, with some light water staining. The receiver shows some good mottled dark gray-blue oil quenched case-hardening. The bolt body shows the expected wear and usage marks with the extractor toning primarily to plum. The bolt handle is lightly toned to pewter, especially on the knob, the underside of the knob showing a nicely checkered circular panel. The rifle is stocked classic style with left side rounded cheekpiece with nice shadow line in a nice grade of English walnut. The stock itself rates very good with much original varnish and the overall minor dings and handling marks one would expect from a hunted arm. The grip shows slightly coarsely checkered borderless panels with the forend showing a wrap-around pattern. The stock features a nice schnabel-style tip, blued steel gripcap, 1" sling swivels and sports a 13 5/8" length of pull to the grooved steel buttplate. There is an oval silver monogram plate along the toeline, it is un-engraved and the rear of the receiver is neatly narrowed as Wundhammer is known to do. The safety lever is overall grooved, as are the faces of the magazine cut off. The rifle is sighted with a brass bead front in the original sight band and base and the rear receiver ring holds a long slide Lyman aperture sight. A very nice example from this famous shop, the pioneer in military rifle sporterizing in this country. (36650-14) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By Alois Koshollek

Lot # 257 (Sale Order: 257 of 711)

serial #23556, 30-06, 24" 2-16 dated barrel with a bright, very good bore which shows strong rifling but with scattered minor frosting, also with a bulge 2" from the muzzle. The barreled action and bottom metal retain 98-99% excellent quality restored rust blue finish. The bolt is unmolested and is a dark gray and pewter patina with some very minor oxidation staining, the shroud showing some good oil quenched case-hardening. The bottom metal shows a number of dings, handling marks and light pits beneath the finish with some scratching around the periphery of the rear guard screw. The rifle is stocked classic style with a very Germanic, squarish left side cheekpiece and rates very good plus showing only minor dings and handling marks from the years, very sparsely scattered. Emil Koshollek and his brother Alois Koshollek worked together for a short period of time, their parents from Silesia and Prussia, this rifle definitely showing those European-Germanic roots. The stock features checkered panels at the grip with a nice diamond accent at their front with the forearm showing a wrap-around point pattern. There is a nice generous schnabel and flared pistolgrip, the gripcap with a checkered hard rubber and accenting brass spacer. The length of pull to the Jostam Hy-gun recoil pad is 13 5/8". There are inlaid black diamonds on the left and right stock flat with a thin brass wire edges and a brass recoil bolt at their center. There is a black diamond along the toeline with another at the front of the forearm through-which the barrel band screw passes; these are either where sling swivels were or where they could be placed if one wished, the schnabel showing a similar nice black hard rubber insert bordered by thin brass wire. The rifle is sighted with a brass bead King front on the original barrel band and has a Lyman receiver sight in place on the rear ring. Mr. Petrov has stamped his personal "MP" in oval on the front extension of the guard, perhaps signifying that he had done some restoration on the arm. Removal of the recoil pad shows "AJ Koshollek" in pencil; it is surmised by Mr. Petrov that Emil did much of the metalwork, and his brother Alois did the stock work (Emil a gifted metalworker, doing much work for Al Linden). Really a lovely magazine sporting rifle which is a marked departure from other examples of the era, showing this stock makers unique design and talents. (36650-91) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom 1903 Rock Island Magazine Sporting Rifle By Wundhammer

Lot # 258 (Sale Order: 258 of 711)

serial #234492, 30-06, 24" 7-13 dated barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barreled action retains about 98% plus excellent quality restored rust blue, the bolt is similar in condition with Wundhammer's signature circular checkered pattern on the underside of the knob. The bottom metal is unmolested and is primarily a faded dark gray blue and plum patina with some remnants of very light pinprick pitting, the front extension showing the flaming bomb and "NRA" stamped very crisply. The rifle is stocked classic style without cheekpiece in what appears to be Circassian walnut. It rates very good with overall minor dings and handling marks from the years, showing a couple very thin spliced-in slivers around the front ring. The checkered grip and forearm patterns are borderless and rate excellent. The rifle features sling swivels, bone pistolgrip cap, schnabel tip and a finely checkered trapdoor long tang buttplate showing light engraving. The rifle is sighted with a brass bead front in the original band and base with a long leaf Lyman aperture sight on the rear ring and the tang of the action has been neatly narrowed as Wundhammer liked to do. Really a very nice, very classic example in a very honest state of condition showing some absolutely stunning grain in the butt left and right. (36650-15) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Fine German 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By F. W. Heym

Lot # 259 (Sale Order: 259 of 711)

serial #5858, 30-06, 24" Krupp steel barrel with a bright excellent bore which shows only a very few, very light pinprick pits near the muzzle. The metal surfaces of this lovely rifle retain about 97% original rust blue with toning along the sharp edges and contact points and some areas of light fading. The bolt body is bright with light longitudinal burnishing and light wear marks from use. The rifle shows tight scroll engraving on the radii of the receiver and on barrel for about one-inch. The bottom metal as well shows lovely scroll in about 80% coverage with the center of the floorplate maker marked "Fr. Wilh. Heym/Suhl-Germany". The bolt shroud shows some light engraving while the knob has been finely checkered in dual panels top and bottom, the rear of the striker showing nice floral engraving. The rifle is stocked classic style in a very lovely piece of French walnut and features checkered grip panels with a wrap-around forend pattern. The stock itself rates about excellent with only some minor handling marks and light dings from the years, most notably some very minor impressions at the comb; there are the beginnings of 2 very tiny cracks at the rear of the nicely narrowed tang, they appear tight and are inconsequential. The stock has a lovely blued steel trapdoor gripcap which is very nicely engraved, checkered steel trapdoor buttplate giving a 14 1/8" length of pull and a lovely bone forend tip neatly fitted, German style, "sleeved" over the narrowed and thinned tip of the forend. There is a sling swivel stud along the toeline with an accompanying barrel band front and a nice un-engraved gold monogram plate midway between the stud and gripcap. The rifle is sighted with a lovely banded sporting ramp front with nicely matted and checkered face, an extremely nicely-executed quarter rib with the 3 folding leaf rear sights graduated for 100, 200 and 300 yards, its matting and checkering matches that of the front ramp and it is maker marked and its rearmost edge. The right side of the receiver ring has been maker-fitted with a Lyman sight base, neatly engraved in the same scroll as the rest of the rifle; currently there is no sight bridge but there is a sight blank installed. This rifle is profusely illustrated on pages 166-7 of Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century in the second chapter relating to German guns. The rear action screw shows a slightly worn slot while the front actions screw is un-engraved and therefore likely a replacement; again this is inconsequential and the screw could be engraved if one wished. An absolutely stunning, flawlessly executed rifle, from this long-standing, extremely respected German maker. (36650-44) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Westley Richards Bar-In-Wood Double Shotgun

Lot # 264 (Sale Order: 264 of 711)

serial #11707, 12 ga., 26" barrels choked skeet and modified with bright excellent bores. This shotgun began life as a pinfire and has been beautifully converted to centerfire. The gun is interesting as it truly spans from the percussion period through the modern cartridge period. These early breechloading pinfire doubles retained many of the characteristics of the percussion era guns with the locks fully cased in wood and with the "crab knuckle" joint where the forend and buttstock meet leaving no metal exposed on the belly of the gun. This shotgun is currently fitted with a nice quality set of Belgian made fluid steel, nitro proofed barrels with 2 3/4" chambers. The shotgun features Westley's top lever action and the hammers look to be slightly modified original pinfire hammers. The condition is nice with the barrels retaining 98% original blue finish. The locks are lightly cleaned to an even gray color with scroll engraving and makers name appearing on each lock. The hammers appear to be blued and are a mix of blue and a brown patina. The checkered straight grip buttstock and forend are of nicely figured European walnut and rate excellent with 95% quality restored hand rubbed oil finish remaining and with nice strong checkering. There is a repaired crack between the top of the left lock and the top tang. The gun points nicely with a 14 1/2" pull over smooth steel shotgun buttplate and showing drops of 1 3/4" and 2 3/8". A German silver monogram plate is present in toeline of stock, it remains unengraved. A classic early cartridge Westley double which should be fun to shoot with these quality modern steel barrels. serial #6361, 40 2 1/2", 32" part round part octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. Additionally this rifle features factory adjustable double set triggers. The condition is wonderful with the "E. REMINGTON & SONS" marked barrel retaining 90% evenly thinning original blue finish with thin areas mixing with a pleasing smooth brown patina. Winchester Model 1894 Special Order Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 275 (Sale Order: 275 of 711)

serial #828209, 25-35, 26" part round part octagon barrel with an excellent bore. This rifle is equipped with an extremely rare factory installed telescopic sight on offset mounts mounted on scope blocks. The rifle has offset barrel markings on the left top flat to accommodate scope mounting without obscuring any markings. There is a Winchester proof on top of the barrel just to the rear of the rear sight elevator. Removal of the rear scope base reveals another Winchester proof which was partially drilled through. A letter of authentication from Herb Houze states that in his opinion this is a factory installed scope. He references the barrel markings being offset and in further correspondence states that the presence of a second proofmark under the scope base only reinforces his opinion that this scope is factory installed as Winchester would have re-struck the proof in a visible location had it been obscured. The rifle has other special order features including part octagon barrel, button magazine, plain pistolgrip stock, windage adjustable tang mounted peepsight and a checkered steel shotgun buttplate. The buttplate checkering is in a skip-line pattern and Mr. Houze states that it is a pattern that has been observed on other special order guns and must be considered of factory origin. The condition of the rifle is superb with metal surfaces retaining 97% plus original blue finish overall. The plain pistolgrip walnut buttstock and forend rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining. The rifle is sighted with standard open sporting sights, a windage adjustable tang mounted peepsight and a Lyman 5A telescopic sight. Included with the rifle is the letter from Herb House dated July 8, 2014 along with a copy of his email where he addresses the second proof mark. An extremely rare, likely unique Winchester 1894 rifle. Investment grade. (16721-1) {C&R}
