Remington Hepburn No. 3 Long Range Rifle

Lot # 301 (Sale Order: 301 of 711)

serial #7644, 44 2 4/10", 32" round barrel with Rigby style flats at breech and a bright excellent bore. This rifle bears serial number "2890" on bottom of barrel, forend and buttstock; all of which fit flawlessly. It is our supposition (as well as Mr. Wills') that this rifle had its lower tang replaced with a single trigger tang and therefore all numbers match except for the lower tang. The rifle features beautifully figured French walnut pistol grip buttstock and horn tipped forend. The condition of the rifle is very fine with the "E. Remington & Sons" barrel retaining about 95% original blue finish. The action retains about 95% original color case-hardened finish which has just softened slightly and has a lovely appearance with nice contrast. The breechblock and hammer retain 95% original blue finish as do the heel and tang position sight bases. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining with good strong checkering and its original checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate. The rifle is sighted with a windgauge front with spirit level, no provision for rear sight seat and a long range Vernier tang mounted peepsight. This is a rare and desirable Remington Hepburn rifle. (16651-27) {ANTIQUE} [John and Jan Wills Collection]

Superb John Wills Custom Sharps Borchardt Long Range Rifle

Lot # 302 (Sale Order: 302 of 711)

serial #16176, 45 2 1/10", 34" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This rifle appears to be a complete custom gun made by John Wills of Anchorage. The barrel looks to be a fine modern barrel, probably a Bresien, and is marked with proper serial number beneath forend along with Wills' "JW" in oval. The top of the barrel is properly marked "Old Reliable", shows the Bridgeport address and is marked "CAL 45 2 1/10" on left side of barrel at breech. The rifle is stocked in the factory pattern with a horn tipped screw fastened forend, a checkered walnut stock with perfectly formed ebony capped pistolgrip exactly as the factory stocks were made. This rifle is fitted with a Pachmayr Old English solid black rubber recoil pad. The condition of the rifle is nearly as new. The barrel retains 99% original blue finish. The action retains 99% beautiful quality color case-hardened finish with lovely ebony panels perfectly fit to the action. The stocks rate excellent with virtually all of their original finish and with crisp checkering and lovely half-moon panels at front and rear of action. The rifle is sighted with a windgauge front, no rear seat and a lovely modern long range tang mounted peepsight mounted in integral base. Included are two old loading dies. A fabulous example of 20th century craftsmanship built by John Wills for his friend Michael Petrov. (16650-5) {ANTIQUE} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom Pre '64 Winchester Model 70 Rifle By John Wills

Lot # 303 (Sale Order: 303 of 711)

serial #179846, 400 Whelen, 24" barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a lovely Pre '64 model 70, custom barrel for Mike Petrov by his good friend John Wills. The barreled action retains about 98-99% excellent quality rust blue, the bottom metal very similar. The bolt body remains bright with a few very widely scattered spots of light oxidation, the handle in a matte satin finish. The classic style walnut stock with scant comb flutes and no cheekpiece rates excellent as neatly refinished. The checkering has been nicely chased and has been accented with wide mullered borders. The gun features original Winchester static sling swivels and has had a nice solid orange rifle pad fitted at the butt giving a 14 3/8" length of pull. The rifle is sighted with a very nice banded front ramp with a brass bead, there is currently no rear sight attached but there is an imprint from a receiver sight around the factory holes on the left of receiver. Currently two-piece steel bases mount a Lyman Alaskan 2 1/2X telescopic sight with fine crosshair reticle and bright very good to excellent optics. The scope itself rates very good showing minor toning to silver and light wear. The rifle has been custom embedded in the barrel nicely free-floated for maximum accuracy. This arm is the subject of the last chapter in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century, volume 2. Mr. Petrov talks about the long process of wanting a 400 Whelen, locating the barrel, brass, having dies made and how John Wills did the machine work for him, another close friend doing the stock work. The top of the barrel is neatly marked "Made For Michael C Petrov" with the caliber marking appropriately near the breech. It is interesting to note that Mr. Petrov gives a plethora of load information for this rifle in the chapter on it. Using North Fork 300 grain bullets traveling just over 2360 ft./s, he achieved a three shot 100 yard group, basically one hole, measuring .325", Éwhat a rifle! Really an absolutely superb modern-chambered 400 Whelen, made true to the original case and chamber dimensions, that will give a lifetime of service as a big bore dangerous game rifle. Custom 1903 Magazine Sporting Rifle By Alvin Linden

Lot # 304 (Sale Order: 304 of 711)

serial #1266588, 30-06, 24" barrel with a bright about excellent bore. The metal surfaces of the barreled action retain about 97% excellent quality restored blue, showing remnants of some very light pinprick pitting toward the muzzle. The bolt appears to have good original blue with only light operational marks, it is DC pencil-numbered to to the gun. The shroud and headless striker show minor wear while the bolt handle features a slightly rearward-turned knob with Emil Koshollek circular checkered panels. The bottom metal shows a bit more wear, primarily on the carry point at the front of the floorplate and the bow of the guard, the bow of the guard being nicely narrowed and slightly sculpted. The rifle is stocked classic style in a very lovely grade of English walnut, rating very good plus to near excellent with only very minor handling marks from the years, the only detractor being some chipping along the periphery of the buttplate, likely from the butt being set down hard at some point, or perhaps numerous times, over the years. The grip panels are masterfully checkered in a borderless pattern with lovely graceful long flowing lines while the forend pattern is very Art-Deco with long geometric ribands. The stock has a very nice checkered steel buttplate and pistolgrip, also the work of Emil Koshollek and a hard rubber forend tip. The arm has QD sling swivels and is sighted with a Weaver model 330 telescopic sight with fine crosshair reticle and very good plus, mostly bright optics, the scope itself rating about excellent with only light wear. The tang of the rifle was neatly narrowed and the receiver immediately in front and in back of the magazine cut off has been neatly sculpted and streamlined; the face of the trigger has been finely checkered. The rifle is discussed in and pictured in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century with a chapter devoted to Linden and Koshollek and the rifle is listed by serial number in the "Summary of DCM Rifle Sales 1922-1942" from SRS as a National Match rifle. Overall a really fine example of this wonderful and prolific craftsman's work, truly, both men's work, beautifully designed and flawlessly executed. (36650-66) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By Kirkwood Of Boston

Lot # 305 (Sale Order: 305 of 711)

serial #457076, 30-06, 24" 3-11 dated barrel with a bright mostly excellent bore which shows only some very slight frosting in the grooves nearer the breech. The barreled action retains about 95% older rust blue, possibly done by Kirkwood themselves, with wear on the bands and sharp edges, the receiver more of a satin finish. The bolt body shows moderate operational wear with minor oxidation and a couple of areas of very light pinprick pitting, the handle shows some toning to pewter with the knob a bright gunmetal gray showing some extremely light pitting. The bottom metal has been satin blued, the rear of the triggerguard lightly sculpted as we find on many of Kirkwood's examples; there is some minor scratching around the periphery of the rearguard screw hole. The rifle is stocked classic style without cheekpiece in a fairly straight-grained piece of English walnut, "Kirkwood" is stamped in the inletting beneath the bottom metal. The stock itself rates very good plus with minor dings and handling marks one would expect from a field-used rifle; there is the beginning of a tiny crack at the rear of the upper tang and a small bruise at the left side of the grip near the cap. There are very nice checkered panels left and right at the grip with mullered borders, the forearm patterns circular at their rear, diamond point at their front, also with mullered front edges. There is a scant schnabel tip, hard rubber gripcap and the length of pull to the grooved trapdoor buttplate is 14 1/8". There is a quick detachable swivel stud along the toeline and a barrel band swivel stud ahead of the forend tip. The rifle is sighted with a Lyman ivory bead front in the original band and base and there is a Lyman receiver sight on the rear ring. There is a sight base soldered to the barrel ahead of the junction of barrel and action which has a nice three-leaf express sight adapted to it at some later point. Another later addition, not to be done at the time the rifle was made, is a Noske quick detach base and ring set which support a Hensoldt Wetzlar Ziel Dialyt 3X telescopic sight with heavy German three post reticle and very good to excellent, bright optics. Additionally the front and rear receiver rings have been professionally drilled and tapped for a Redfield-style one-piece scope base (is not present). A lovely example overall that clearly has had a long service life with the numerous sights that have been added and used over the years. (36650-22) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Winchester Model 1873 Deluxe Factory Engraved Third Model Rifle

Lot # 306 (Sale Order: 306 of 711)

serial #476158B, 44-40, 24" octagon barrel with an about very good bore which shows strong rifling but with minor pitting its full length. The barrel and magazine tube are primarily a smooth plum brown patina, showing the widely scattered pit here and there and some light oxidation, with all markings remaining crisp. The nosecap shows some flaky case-hardening, also with minor pitting, more prevalent around the area of the swivel. The receiver is now a plum brown toning to pewter on the sharp edges and shows near overall light pinprick pitting. The engraving however is still fully visible on both left and right flats with the left sideplate showing a bellowing elk game scene vignette, with light scroll atop the frame and in the area behind the cartridge lifter on the belly of the frame; the "44 Cal" is still prominent on the lifter. The hammer and lever have toned primarily to a deep brown, the lever with light oxidation and pinprick pitting; the trigger is single-set. The buttplate is a mostly smooth pewter patina with light speckles of brown oxidation here and there, its upper tang shows nice loose scroll. The rifle is sighted with the original silver blade front sight and ladder-style long-range rear. The straight grip checkered walnut buttstock rates very good to very good plus, likely showing some added finish but with the wood still mostly proud of the metal, also with minor dings and handling marks, the checkering worn primarily to flattop. The butt shows some striking figure left and right and is fitted with a factory sling swivel on base. The left lower tang is marked "16 X", the stock is unmarked but for "XXX" in pencil in the lower tang recess, the marking appears contemporary. The forend is in a similar state of condition showing a bit more wear and bruises, but also with stunning grain, the checkering somewhat flat-top but more prominent than the butt. Records at Cody confirm: rifle, octagon, 44 cal, set trigger, leaf sight, sling swivels and two dollar engraving. The rifle was received in the warehouse in May 1894. Really a handsome gun with some lovely engraving, somewhat tired-looking at this point but a rare factory engraved Winchester 1873 nonetheless. (36929-1) {ANTIQUE}

Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By Kirkwood Of Boston

Lot # 307 (Sale Order: 307 of 711)

serial #369468, 30-06, 24" 6-09 dated barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains about 95% maker blue while the receiver shows some very good mottled oil quenched case-hardening, more pewter on the front ring. The bolt body retains good original blue as does the extractor with the shroud and safety showing some remnants of oil quenched case-hardening, the bolt handle has been neatly converted to butterknife style with a grooved underside, its outer edge showing some light pitting. The bottom metal has worn primarily to gray with some strong original blue on the bow. The gun is stocked classic style without cheekpiece showing a very nice pinched comb and very scant schnabel tip. The grip area has neatly checkered panels with mullered borders with the forend showing two nice borderless patterns, their leading edge only with a mullered border. The gun is fitted with shepherds crook-style swivel loops and has a bone pistolgrip, a slightly more modern solid red rifle pad is fitted for a 14" length of pull. The stock itself rates very good with much original varnish and the overall dings and handling marks one would expect from a field-used arm. There is a very slight crack at the rear of the receiver tang, also with some oil soaking in this area darkening the wood slightly, and there is a minor crack in the figured wood along the left side of the stock at the scope base. The rifle is sighted with a brass bead front in the original front sight base and a three folding leaf rear sight purchased from A O Niedner while in Malden, Rigby style, with heavy base and platinum inlaid index lines (one line has gone missing). The striker is fitted with a nice elevation-adjustable aperture sight, the pin which holds the bolt sleeve lock in place being left slightly extra long to bear upon the receiver, another pin fitted into the striker proper has been neatly fitted to bear upon the raceway in the action, thereby returning the sight to the same position each time the bolt is closed in battery. There has been a Griffin & Howe scope base fitted which supports a Lyman Alaskan telescopic sight with post and crosshair reticle and bright optics. The scope itself rates about very good showing finish wear and a couple light pits. Interestingly the barrel bedding block soldered to the underside of the barrel has come un-soldered but is still retained in the stock by the forend screw, this would be an extremely easy repair for any competent 'smith and would not affect the bluing in the least. The barrel channel is neatly stamped "Kirkwood" in the inletting. The trigger has been neatly fitted with an adjustment screw and has a nice crisp lightened pull, its face very neatly checkered. A super Boston-made magazine rifle reflecting many of the superlative qualities of the Golden Age of American custom rifle building. (36650-21) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom Deluxe Model 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By R. F. Sedgley

Lot # 308 (Sale Order: 308 of 711)

serial #130, 30-06, 24" barrel with a bright very good plus bore which shows very light frosting its full-length, primarily within the grooves. The metal surfaces retain about 97% original maker blue, the loss being some even fading and light high edge wear. The bolt body remains mostly bright with the elongated Sedgley burnishing still vibrant, the knob showing dual checkered circular panels. The extractor has had the Sedgley chrome plating polished off in the 5 full-length lines, it was then blued resulting in a very attractive two-tone appearance with the dark blued "stripes" contrasting with the bright chromium plate.

Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By Barney Worthen

Lot # 309 (Sale Order: 309 of 711)

serial #471837, 30-06, 24" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of barreled action retain about 90% original blue, the loss is due to even overall fading to a dark gray-blue, toning more to brown and pewter near the muzzle. The rifle shows overall light handling marks and scratches from the years with some light pitting in the area adjacent to the front sight ramp. The bolt shows light operational marks with the extractor polished bright, with toning to pewter on the knob and a checkered circular panel on its underside. The shroud shows remnants of some flaky case-hardening and some purple and blue flamed colors as well. The bottom metal has toned primarily to a dark gray and slightly worn pewter patina with some minor handling marks. The rifle is stocked classic style without cheekpiece in a very nice grade of American black walnut. The stock rates very good with overall minor dings and dents consistent with field use, the toe showing a few more scratches or light scars. The grip is panel checkered with a nice thin border running between the two at the front of the grip, the forearm shows a similar treatment, the panels with some lightly flattened points. The rifle has a very nice schnabel forend tip and Worthen's signature horn pistolgrip cap with oval German silver insert, it is un-engraved. The length of pull to the smooth steel buttplate is 13 1/4" and the rifle is fitted with shepherds crook style sling eyelets. The gun is sighted with a very long sporting ramp with a nicely matted face and a Marbles Sheard bead front sight with a Lyman receiver sight on the rear ring. There is a small chip missing and the very beginning of a very light crack at the rear of the neatly narrowed receiver tang, both would be easily rectified if one wished. The rifle features Worthen's signature spring-loaded plunger in the safety lug of the bolt, the extractor with a corresponding cut to engage it. These were made by Worthen to preclude any possibility of the bolt handle opening slightly, accidentally, while in the field thus negating the danger of any type of misfire and from the bolt handle being very slightly out-of-battery. The top of the barrel is maker-marked "Barney H Worthen San Francisco" and the rifle is pictured in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century, volume 2. Really a lovely rifle that has seen some use but certainly not abuse and appears to have been well cared for. (36650-74) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

The checkered straight grip Schuetzen buttstock and horn tipped forend rate very good plus, the buttstock may have been very lightly cleaned and had a little added finish at some point. The fit is tight, checkering is excellent and the heavy Swiss buttplate retains 95% original nickel plated finish. The forend is equipped with a period round folding palm rest with iron shaft and neat pewter band where the iron and wood join. Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Schuetzen Rifle

Lot # 315 (Sale Order: 315 of 711)

serial #113340, 32-40, 28" full octagon No. 3 weight barrel with a bright excellent bore. This rifle features factory double set adjustable triggers, finger spur lever, factory palm rest, Schuetzen buttstock and Laudensack buttplate and interestingly the rifle has no provision for open sights. The barrel address is offset onto the left angled flat and two scope blocks have been added to the top flat. The rifle is in nice condition with the barrel retaining about 90 - 95% original blue finish with scattered specks of light surface oxidation present. The action retains about 90% original blue with some flaking present and with areas of loss showing a pleasing smooth brown patina. The finish loss is mostly on the belly of the forend and along the top of the comb. The forend is equipped with a factory palm rest, whether it was installed by the factory or added later is unknown. The forend features a schnabel tip with ebony insert and the pistol grip is capped; the Laudensack buttplate is an even smooth gray patina. Winchester Model 1873 Deluxe Rifle

Lot # 320 (Sale Order: 320 of 711)

serial #194646, 32-20, 24" part round part octagon barrel with button magazine and a very good bore that shows a little light oxidation but is mostly bright. This rifle features a color case-hardened action with checkered fancy walnut pistolgrip stock and forend with special part octagon barrel with shorter than standard magazine. The left side of the lower tang is marked "702 XX 32", the top tang inlet of stock is stamped with this same full marking, rather than just the "702", which woud be proper. The font type in the inlet is also non serifed and different than the font on the tang leading us to believe that this original Winchester deluxe pistolgrip stock started life on a different rifle. The stock fits very well, not perfect, but very well. The barrel retains about 20% original blue and is mostly an even brown patina with some scattered pitting present in some areas. The action retains 85% original faded color case-hardened finish which has taken on a pleasing smooth pewter gray appearance. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are nicely figured and rate very good with 80% original finish remaining and with very good checkering that shows a little wear on the rear section of the forend. The pistolgrip has a fancy ebony insert in the base. The rifle is sighted with a Beach combination front and buckhorn rear. Factory records confirm the configuration but lists the barrel as octagon and shows a shipment date of July 27, 1886 A handsome deluxe 1873 rifle.
