Fine British Percussion Double Rifle By Thomas Horsley Of York

Lot # 326 (Sale Order: 326 of 711)

serial #1030, .53 caliber, 30" barrels with bright excellent bores. This is a wonderful rifle. The locks feature sliding safeties and show lovely scroll engraving with makers name appearing on each lock. The tang is also fully engraved with beautiful scroll appearing on the triggerguard, buttplate tang and tailpipe. The round patchbox is engraved with a large recumbent cat, likely a leopard. The barrels are engraved on top rib "WILKINSON & SON GUN MAKERS TO HER MAJESTY PALL MALL LONDON" and are numbered on underside "5950" with platiunum blow out plugs on either side of breech. The barrels fit perfectly and aside from the barrel address there would be no indication that they were not in fact original to this rifle. The rifle is sighted with a simple bead front and three folding leaf express rear mounted in top rib with dovetail taking the second letter "N" in "LONDON". The original brass tipped ramrod is present and the toeline of stock shows a plain monogram plate. The condition is wonderful with the barrels retaining 90% evenly thinning restored brown finish with some very light pitting visible in some areas. The locks and tang are a wonderful even gray patina and are very smooth and free of pitting. The triggerguard with checkered pistolgrip spur, patchbox and buttplate all retain 95% nice quality restored blue finish. The stock is of a fabulous piece of English walnut and has coarsely checkered wrist and forend and a wonderful round cheekrest. The condition of the stock is excellent as beautifully refinished and the rifle points beautifully with a 14 1/4" length of pull. The locks are very crisp and this rifle would be a joy to shoot. Colt Third Model Dragoon Revolver

Lot # 327 (Sale Order: 327 of 711)

serial #18696, .44 caliber, 8" part round part octagon barrel with a very good bore. This late production Dragoon features the rare 8" barrel and has all matching numbers including the wedge. This is a very nice revolver. The cylinder retains about 85% of its original Texas Ranger and Indian fight scene. The iron surfaces retain an even smoky gray colored patina overall with edges and markings all remaining sharp and legible. The brass grip frame retains 90 - 95% original silver-plated finish with a nicely patinated brass showing where finish is thin or missing. The one-piece walnut grip retains about 25% original finish with a small chip from the left toe. The grips fit beautifully and have a lovely appearance. A nice honest 8" Dragoon. (16889-3) {ANTIQUE}

Colt First Model Martial Dragoon Revolver

Lot # 328 (Sale Order: 328 of 711)

serial #5117 all matching except for unnumbered and badly pitted wedge, .44 caliber, 7 1/2" part round part octagon with a good bore. The barrel bears the New York address reading from breech to muzzle and the left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S / PATENT / U.S.". The revolver has a dovetailed sight mounted in the top flat of the barrel which cuts through the "AD" at the beginning of the word "ADDRESS". Iron surfaces of revolver have been lightly cleaned and bear a flat and even gray color overall. All markings and numbers remain clear and legible except as previously noted. The cylinder scene is no longer visible but the cylinder serial number remains visible. The brass grip frame was also lightly cleaned and is re-acquiring a patina. The one-piece walnut grip rates very good as refinished long ago. The wedge retaining screw is a modern replacement. A good entry level representative example of the First Model Dragoon revolver. John Walch Navy Model 12 Shot Revolver

Lot # 329 (Sale Order: 329 of 711)

serial #14, .36 caliber, 6" octagon barrel. This is an interesting and early variant of the Walch revolver which bears a hand engraved address on sides of barrel "Walch / Fire Arms Co. / NY" on left of barrel and "Patented Feb. 8. 1859" on right side of barrel. In addition to these hand engraved markings, the frame is also nicely scroll engraved and the two-piece walnut grips are checkered. The metal surfaces of this revolver retain an even and mostly smooth gray brown patina with some pitting on either side of triggerguard as well as the hammer and rammer plunger. The engraved markings and scroll all remain fully legible and visible and the revolver functions properly. The checkered walnut grips rate very good with a good deal of original finish remaining. It is estimated that only 200 Navy Model Walch revolvers were ever produced with this being a rarer variant with these special markings and engraving. (16889-21) {ANTIQUE}

Colt 1851 Navy First Model Screw-Under-Wedge Revolver

Lot # 330 (Sale Order: 330 of 711)

serial #792 all matching including wedge, .36 caliber, 7 1/2" barrel with a good bore. This very early Navy shows all proper markings and retains about 20% of its original cylinder scene. The loading lever while matching looks like it may be a nicely aged replacement which has been neatly renumbered to match the balance of the gun. The metal surfaces of the revolver are a dark brown patina, more dark blue gray on the frame with the barrel and cylinder being more brown. The brass squareback triggerguard and backstrap retain perhaps 15 or 20% original silver-plated finish with the balance showing a pleasing mellow patina. The one-piece walnut grip rates good with some old added finish and a fair amount of chipping on the base at either side of backstrap. This wear or damage in inconsistent with the condition of the buttstrap which leads us to conclude that the buttstrap may have been cleaned and re-numbered as the loading lever was and then aged to match. Under a jewelers loupe the form of the numbers is consistent with the numbers on the loading lever. Again, neither of these two issues are obtrusive and they would pass any cursory review as original markings. The screw-under-wedge Navy is one of the most difficult variations for a collector to acquire and this revolver would be a perfectly acceptable example to fill that hole in your collection, in the likely case that you never have another opportunity to acquire an example for less than five figures. Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By Griffin & Howe

Lot # 331 (Sale Order: 331 of 711)

serial #211830 (G&H No. 202), 400 Whelen, 24" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barreled action retains about 98% original rust blue. The receiver shows remnants of light pitting, clearly the way G & H received it, the section of the receiver which they cleaned of its markings showing no remnants of pitting at all, the barrel as well shows absolutely no instances of ever having oxidized. The bottom metal retains a similar amount of original blue with excellent-quality flowing scroll and geometric border engraving in about 80% coverage. The bolt body shows only very light operational marks and the bolt knob has been flattened and coarsely checkered on its underside with a nice teardrop-shaped more finely checkered panel on its outer edge. The gun is stocked classic style in a nice grade of American black walnut with a borderless fleur-de-lis checkered panels at the grip and a wrap-around pattern at the forend. One inch sling swivels are fitted and the gun is sighted with a banded sporting ramp front with nicely matted ramp and light engraving around its periphery, with an additional light band of engraving at the junction of barrel and action; a Lyman 48 receiver sight is in place on the rear bridge. Lovely Custom Mauser Magazine Sporting Rifle By John Dubiel

Lot # 332 (Sale Order: 332 of 711)

serial #92222, 30-06, 24" barrel with an about excellent bore which is bright with sharp rifling but shows some very minor frosting in the grooves. The barreled action retains about 90% original blue, actually appearing stronger, the loss is due primarily to overall fading with some very light muzzle wear (the rust blue actually appearing brown under very bright light). The bolt body is still bright with nice mottled burnishing still present, the extractor is polished bright with some light remnants of oxidation staining. The handle and shroud have toned to a dark gray-brown with the striker being bright. The bottom metal has toned primarily to a pewter and brown and the floorplate is hinged-style with an inside-the-bow release. The rifle is an immaculately stocked classic style in nice English walnut with a rounded left side cheekpiece with a lovely shadow line. The stock rates very good plus to near excellent overall with lovely original varnish and only minor dings and handling marks from a lightly used field gun. The grip checkering is wrap-over and flawlessly executed with mullered borders; the forend pattern is wrap-around and identically nice. Accents include a nice horn forend tip and a blued steel gripcap and there is an antique orange-hue rifle pad fitted at the butt for a 13 1/4" length of pull. There are swivel studs along the toeline and banded on the barrel and the rifle is sighted with a banded sporting ramp front which supports a brass bead showing an neatly stippled face while the rear receiver bridge holds a Lyman receiver sight. The front ring is neatly stippled and the guard screws slightly engraved. The top of barrel is marked "Made by John Dubiel Ardmore Okla. No.509", the caliber marking is nearer the breech. The lines of this rifle are wonderful, it exudes grace at every turn and is just a beautiful piece of craftsmanship; it shoulders as though it were made specifically for you. Custom 1903 Springfield Sporting And Target Rifle By Ross King With Pope Barrel

Lot # 334 (Sale Order: 334 of 711)

serial #1230726, 30-06, 25" medium weight Pope barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barreled action retains about 95% original blue with the loss due only to some light high edge wear and even fading. The bolt body remains mostly bright with the handle slightly forged and swept for scope clearance showing a nice knurled band around the center of the knob. The shroud retains some dark case-hardening, the striker is headless, the safety is reversed National Match style, additionally there has been a polished hardened steel bearing surface added to the front leading edge of the cocking piece wear it engages the sear. The bottom metal is fading to a dark gray-green fading parkerizing showing wear to pewter on its sharp edges. The gun is stocked classic style without cheekpiece and the stock rates very good to very good plus showing much original varnish and minor dings and handling marks near overall. There is a bone pistolgrip cap, nice schnabel tip, 1 1/4" sling swivels and of the length of pull to the cupped checkered aluminum buttplate is 13 1/4". The top of the barrel is marked "H.M. Pope" with the underside showing Popes markings "594 / FR / EL / 14(over)0 /10/5/21" the barrel is also stamped in Popes single die "H.M. Pope" along with "W.D. Murphy" ahead of the Pope markings. There was a forward bedding block into-which the front sling swivel screwed, it has come un-soldered but is still in the stock and could easily be reattached to the underside of the barrel if one wished. The stock shows some nice checkered panels which are bordered and accented with light foliate flourishes and there seems to be some nice grain in the butt. The gun is sighted with what appears to be a standard military style 1903 front sight and a Lyman 48 rear which has no bridge, there is a blank in the slot. A one piece steel Redfield base mounts an Unertl 10x43 Vulture telescopic sight with crosshair reticle and bright excellent optics. The scope itself rates about very good with numerous mounting marks from the years and scratches and fading finish. The action has been narrowed along its rear tang as King learned from Wundhammer and there has been a small flatspring-loaded roller fitted to the underside of the tang which bears upon the striker, giving it consistent position each time for a consistent trigger pull, indeed the let off is crisp and light; there is a small hole at the rear of the triggerguard bow wear it would appear as though a setscrew for overtravel was once fitted. While no record of this serial number could be found, it is interesting to note serial numbers 1230724 and 1230736 are both listed as National Match rifles in the SRS "Summary of DCM Rifle Sales". Really a super-looking rifle from Mr. Roscoe C. King, protŽgŽ of Ludwig Wundhammer, with an absolutely lovely Pope barrel which likely shoots single hole groups still. Custom 1903 Rock Island Magazine Sporting Rifle By Adolph Minar

Lot # 335 (Sale Order: 335 of 711)

serial #40010, 257 Roberts, 24" Sukalle barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 98% nicely restored rust blue finish, showing some light muzzle wear and perhaps a very widely scattered, very light handling mark here and there, most prominent on the triggerguard bow. The receiver races and follower are honed bright, as is the extractor, the extractor with some very light oxidation staining. The bolt handle has been nicely polished and narrowed by Minar, the knob is smooth. The rifle is stocked classic style with a nice rounded left-sided shadow line cheekpiece, in a very nice straight-grain piece of English walnut. The stock shows very nice checkered panels left and right at the grip, with double borders, while the forearm shows a nice wrap-around pattern. The stock itself rates very good plus with near overall minor dings and handling marks from the years and appears unmolested. There is a nice bone forend tip, hard rubber pistolgrip cap and a grooved bone buttplate giving a length of pull of 14", there is some very minor insect damage on the butt. There are front and rear swivels currently installed, the rear swivel does not match the front and is likely a replacement made at a later time. The rifle is sighted with a banded sporting ramp front with nicely stippled face, which supports a brass bead sight, the rear bridge with a Lyman aperture sight. The underside of the barrel is marked with William Sukalle's "S" in oval proof in, and numbered 2635. It is known that Minar and Sukalle traded work, it is highly likely many of his rifles will be Sukalle barreled. Adolph Minar died as a comparatively young man at the age of 56 and did not have the opportunity to build many rifles. In fact his daughter revealed that she felt he had made about 36 total. His work was the subject of a number of articles in publications or books, all glowingly praising his work and how very fine it was. Jack O'Connor absolutely loved his Minar rifle, and Mr. Petrov was able to compare the two and determine this rifle as a Minar. The lines, construction and execution are all wonderful on this rifle, second only to or on par with Harry Rodgers' work; it hangs perfectly. A fine rifle from a very very rare, short-lived maker. The only marking on the rear tang is the serial number and along with the barrel, breechblock and buttplate, are all numbered alike. The buttstock and forend rate about very good with added light varnish, minor dents and handling marks and a couple thin cracks in the toe. The front sight insert is missing, the folding rear sight is equipped with an elevator but graduation marks are no longer visible and the lower rear tang is equipped with a saddle ring. A very good example overall. (56915-4) {ANTIQUE}

Sharps Model 1851 "Boxlock" Carbine

Lot # 346 (Sale Order: 346 of 711)

serial #395, .52 caliber, 21 5/8" round barrel with an evenly pitted bore that still shows deep rifling its whole length. This example is in the military carbine configuration with no patchbox and has the long sling bar on left side. The barrel bears inspectors intials "RSL", the top tang is marked "C. SHARPS / PATENT / 1848" and bears serial number "395". The primer door shows proper Maynard patent mark however, the barrel does not show a Robbins & Lawrence mark, it was just never applied. This is a very honest, early and desirable Sharps carbine. Metal surfaces of carbine bear a wonderful even, rich brown patina with some scattered patches of light surface oxidation in areas with some fine scattered pitting on the frame and lock, mostly on right side. The original sights and iron sling bar are in place. The walnut stock and forend rate very good plus and again are very nice showing some original finish, having never been sanded. They have a rich dark color and the buttstock shows a beautifully executed repair to a moderate sized chip from toe. The wood matches very well and the repair is difficult to see. These carbines are quite scarce and this particular one has an extremely pleasing and honest appearance. (16915-5) {ANTIQUE}

Exceptional Remington New York State Rolling Block Carbine

Lot # 347 (Sale Order: 347 of 711)

50-70 CF, 22" barrel with a bright excellent bore which shows a couple spots of very light oxidation. The barrel retains about 97-98% original blue, the loss is due primarily to some very light fading and the tiny handling marks and scratches that come from the years. The barrel band is a nice mottled oil quenched case-hardened gray, retaining nearly all its original finish, the band spring is a lovely pale fire temper blue. The frame and triggerplate retain 98% plus vivid color case-hardening. The trigger, hammer, breechblock and their associated pins retain all their original bright polish with only some extremely light staining on the hammer and thumb piece of the breechblock. The buttplate as well shows nearly all its original color case-hardening with the tiniest hint of wear at the heel and toe. The buttstock rates excellent with only minor dings and handling marks and a small bruise near the cartouche, the cartouche itself being very crisp. The forend is in a similar state of condition with only very minor handling marks scattered about its surface. The mechanism is crisp and functional. An exceptional New York State rolling block carbine from-which it would be difficult to upgrade. (36915-2) {ANTIQUE}

Palmer Bolt Action Carbine By E.G. Lamson & Co.

Lot # 348 (Sale Order: 348 of 711)

54 RF, 20" barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a fine example of these rather scarce Vermont manufactured carbines. The lockplate is properly marked as is the top of the action. The barrel bears an even brown patina with generous traces of original blue with a few light blemishes and specks of fine oxidation staining. The lock retains all its brilliant crisp original case colors and the colors on the iron barrel band, triggerguard and buttplate have mellowed to a smooth brownish-gray. The walnut stock rates excellent with nearly all its original reddish-brown oil finish with sharp edges, a few minor handling marks and a crisp "MM" cartouche. There is an additional small "MM" stamped in the wood just below the front sling bar bolt matching the marking in the left side of the barrel below the rear sight. The action remains strong and mechanically functional. A fantastic high quality Palmer carbine. (56915-12) {ANTIQUE}

U.S. Model 1807 Flintlock "Indian Carbine" By Springfield Armory

Lot # 349 (Sale Order: 349 of 711)

54 cal., 33 1/2" barrel with an oxidized bore. The barrel is primarily dark brown with scattered fine oxidation staining, light pinprick pitting and a covering of flaking dried protective oil. The breech end of the barrel shows lightly fading eaglehead and VP proofs and "U.S." marking. The lock is an even mixture of dull brown and pewter with pinprick pitting and dried protective oil and is dated with an almost faded 1808 at the rear. This gun is a reconversion to flint with a ground an enlarged touchole and a collapsed reproduction spring leaving the frizzen loose and inoperable. The brass furniture has a tarnished ochre patina and is dated 1808 on the tang of the buttplate. The stock rates good overall with numerous handling marks, missing splintered edges along either forend, a large chip at the heel and a large "M A / 2" spear head shaped cartouche in the left rear of the buttstock. Included with the carbine is a replacement button tip iron ramrod. A good to very good condition example of the very scarce "Indian Carbines". (56839-1) {ANTIQUE}

Special "One Of Nine" Presentation Harrington & Richardson M1 Garand Rifle

Lot # 350 (Sale Order: 350 of 711)

30-06, 24" LMR barrel dated "8 55" with a near excellent bore that is mostly bright but has one spot with a few very light pits about midway down. The rifle exhibits arsenal quality parkerizing with nearly 99% remaining blending with light oxidation staining and a few small specks of light oxidation scattered throughout. The walnut stocks rate excellent and have a few light dings and fine handling marks. The stocks are correctly unmarked due to never having been sent for military acceptance but are definitely GI quality. The heel of the receiver is a slightly darker color and is dated "1955" along the rear with "ONE OF NINE" below circled H&R Inc and Line Material Company factory logos. The model identifier roll mark along the rear is also a different font than the standard H&R production with the "&" being quite unique. Beside the barrel, the parts are all H&R except for the trigger group which is by International Harvester Inc, this compilation has been seen on other existing "One of Nine" examples as well. An accompanying letter states that this rifle was presented to Joseph H. Quick who served as the President and General Manager of Harrington & Richardson between 1951 and 1954. The letter also states that nine such unserial numbered rifles were produced and were presented to executives of Harrington & Richardson, International Harvester and the Line Material Company. These three companies were the major commercial producers of M1 Garand rifles during the Korean War era. The letter is signed by Joseph Quick's son Kenneth and was notarized in February of this year. Writer Bob Seijas mentioned "the one of nine project" in an article for the Garand Collector's Association Journal Volume 6 Issue 2 in the Spring of 1992 "Holding the Line: The Story of the Line Material Corp." Bob describes in the article that as Line Materials barrel contracts drew to a close in 1955, several of the key men at Line wanted one of these rifles to commemorate their experiences. Despite stern warnings about misappropriation of Government property, they decided to do something about it and were able to procure enough components (out of channel) to construct nine special M1 rifles, three each for key people at Line, IHC and H&R. The nine receivers were supplied by H&R, barrels by Line, and internal parts by IHC and HRA. The receivers were unserialed but were marked with the logos of H&R and LM Corp., the year 1955. This information, along with the family letter, further validates the origin of and provides needed provenance to this unique rifle. Having been presented to the GM of H&R during some of the finest Garand production years makes it even more one-of-a-kind. A truly rare post-war issue Garand that is in near new condition and would be the epitome of a serious Garand collection. A photo of Joseph H. Quick and a short professional bio clipping are also included. (46857-4) {C&R}
