Rare E-Series M1 Carbine By Underwood

Lot # 351 (Sale Order: 351 of 711)

serial #E134, 30 Carbine, 18" unmarked barrel with an excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 85-90% of what appears to be the original parkerized finish that is thinning and flaking to brown patina, the balance blending to a mottled gray. The walnut stocks rate excellent and feature a two-rivet handguard that is correctly "M-U" marked on the underside and a low-wood buttstock with the same marking in the sling channel. The buttstock has no inspector's cartouches or acceptance markings but has some nice subtle figure and a nicer non-military finish. Carbine has an early style trigger group, narrow barrel band and a flip-up rear sight, all correct features for an early production carbine. A tan canvas sling and steel oiler are included, there is no magazine present. This carbine was part of a limited production by Underwood which Larry Ruth lists in his book War Baby! The U.S. Caliber 30 Carbine as being an experimental or presentation model, separate from the "X" series experimental carbines. Though little information is available on the production or dissemination of this series it appears that very few were made and only a handful are known to be in circulation now. At the time Ruth was writing his definitive work, he referred to only two "E" numbered examples known at that time, one that shipped to a sub-contractor in December of 1943. Very few others have appeared sporadically since but no further information has surfaced regarding them. A terrific investment opportunity for the serious M1 Carbine collector to own an excellent condition example of these, the rarest of the rare Underwoods. (46917-1) {C&R}

Maynard Model 1882 No. 14 Long-Range Creedmoor Rifle

Lot # 363 (Sale Order: 363 of 711)

serial #23445, is 44-100, 32" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains about 97% what appears to be fading original blue, come which actually tones to plum under very bright light. Under very close scrutiny one can discern for plugged holes atop the barrel which are nearly invisible, the blue, polish and patina on the barrel is very old however. The frame is a mottled smoky case-hardened gray showing some trace colors with Tony to plum along the lower tang. The side plate shows some very nice color case-hardening and may be a replacement from the period of use but it fits very well and has been in place for a very very long time. The lever retains some strong trace case colors, the balance a mottled smoky case-hardened patina. The checkered straight grip walnut buttstock rates otherwise very good with much original varnish and some light handling marks and dings. The rear sight seat for the long-range sight has been filled with a piece of lighter colored walnut. The original checkered hard rubber butt with widows peak is no longer present, only the widow's peak remains and there is a 3/4" Pachmayr old English pad in place at the butt. The pistolgrip insert is present inside the lever loop, the pistolgrip is not present however, the forend rates very good plus, now devoid of varnish and with a small crack along its left edge. Barrel-to-frame lockup is excellent and the barrel is numbered to the gun in the identical font, the mechanism is crisp and functions well. The rifle is sighted with a windage adjustable globe front with interchangeable inserts (none are included) and there is a long-range adjustable aperture sight on the tang. Included with the gun are two bullet moulds, a breech seater, and a small box with an assortment of links, extractors and a firing pin for a model 1873. The small parts are in a cardboard box which lists the parts within and reads "from AO Niedner" additionally an antique piece of paper is included in the box. Written in pencil is "this rubber buttplate was fitted by AO Niedner Dowagiac Mich July 1921". It is not possible to tell with any degree of certainty if this slip of paper is referring to this firearm, clearly there were no Pachmayr-marked Olde English pads in 1921. The gun comes in a hardwood carry case with green felt lining. Nonetheless this is still a very nice No. 14 Creedmoor rifle, a custom buttplate would go a long way to improving its looks but the bore is immaculate and the rifle likely shoots beautifully. Custom Marlin Ballard Pope-Barreled Single Shot Target Rifle

Lot # 365 (Sale Order: 365 of 711)

serial #983, 33-40, 31 1/2" octagon No. 4 weight Winchester Repeating Arms marked Pope-rifled barrel with false muzzle and a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains about 92% maker blue, the loss is due to some light high edge wear and a general fading with minor scattered dings and handling marks. The frame retains perhaps 40% muting color case-hardening, the balance a mottled smoky gray case-hardened patina. The Pope fingergroove lever is interesting in that it is made of brass, brazed to what was likely the original closing lever of the rifle, the two neatly melded together, likely once nickel plated. The checkered walnut pistolgrip buttstock rates very good plus with overall light dings and handling marks showing a bit of added finish but some stunning grain figure on the left side around the Germanic, somewhat squarish cheekpiece. The point of comb has been relieved at some point to accommodate laying down of the rear sight. There is a tight 3" crack on the right side of the stock at the frame, it will not flex. The forend rates about very good as period-modified, it is from a Winchester 1885 high wall rifle and shows a 2" crack along its right edge and another at the belly of the frame. It has been fitted with a period palm rest, somewhat rudimentarily. The rifle is sighted with a globe front sight, adjustable for windage and a medium-range aperture tang sight on the frame. The barrel has been drilled and tapped for steel target blocks, two are present and there are two filled dovetails nearer the breech. In addition to the Winchester factory roll marking the breech area is stamped "Rifled by HM Pope Hartford", a portion of that marking obscured by the sight base. The Pope markings include "21/1.41" and "373" on the underside of the barrel and lockup is good and the gun seems to function well mechanically. The rifle comes with a shooters kit which includes a duplex powder measure, Pope capper/decapper, bullet lube pump, short starter, bullet mould, an assortment of unprimed brass, an ideal capper/decapper and a large assortment of targets shot with the gun as far back as the 70s. Judging from the targets, if you are able to do your job, this rifle will certainly get the job done. (36650-52) {ANTIQUE} [Michael Petrov Collection]

The checkered walnut pistolgrip buttstock rates excellent with much original varnish and only minor handling marks showing some stunning grain on the right side of the butt, the checkering still crisp. The Schuetzen style forend rates excellent as well, the checkering showing a few light dings and handling marks. The Schuetzen buttplate is primarily now a deep pewter and brown patina, with no remnants of plate. The rifle barrel was made without sights and has subsequently been nicely drilled and tapped for steel target blocks which are present, the front block partially through the "Manufactured By" roll mark. The barrel shows the appropriate "Stevens-Pope/Manufactured By The J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co Chicopee Falls Mass. USA" roll mark and the underside of the barrel is numbered "1924" with no other markings. It would appear as though perhaps the forend holes were drilled inappropriately, as the original holes were neatly plugged and moved forward about half their diameter and neatly re-tapped. The rear of the forend appears to have been re-stamped at some point "549". Lockup is tight and the double-acting set triggers seem to work properly. Mounted atop the barrel is a Winchester A5 telescopic sight with crosshair reticle and slightly cloudy optics, the scope rating about very good overall showing minor length-wise wear to the bluing. Really a very handsome Stevens-Pope Schuetzen Junior that likely shoots as good as it looks. (36651-12) {C&R} [John and Jan Wills Collection]

The smooth English walnut buttstock and flat bottom forearm with scant schnabel tip both rate very good plus to excellent with only minor dings and handling marks from use. The right side of the butt has a shield-shaped plaque inlaid with a double headed eagle with a triangular crest at its chest with the number "32" within. There is a nice color case-hardened pistolgrip cap and the buttplate is of course a checkered Niedner. A super rifle-scope combination from this gifted and famous forward-thinking gunsmith and inventor. (36650-55) {ANTIQUE} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Extremely Rare Colt New Service Double Action Revolver In 476 Enfield

Lot # 371 (Sale Order: 371 of 711)

serial #5543, 476 Enfield, 5 1/2" barrel with a bright excellent bore which shows a couple spots of very light oxidation. The barrel on this likely unique revolver retains about 95% plus original blue, the loss is due primarily to very light handling marks and extremely light flaking to brown with some wear to pewter on the left and right of the muzzle. The cylinder shows a bit more loss, retaining perhaps 90% original blue, strongest of course within the flutes, the leading edges toned to pewter with two circumferential light drag marks. The frame retains perhaps 85% original blue which is quite strong on the flats and in the protected areas with the front and back strap toned now to pewter and speckled brown. The hammer shows excellent case colors along its spine, muting slightly more on its flats while the trigger shows some strong remnants of fire temper blue. The checkered hard rubber Colt grips rate very good plus to excellent and are scratch-numbered to the gun on their interior. The left grip has toned slightly more to brown and shows a bit more wear than the right grip. The lanyard loop is intact and the number "200" is neatly stamped atop the backstrap knuckle with the number "1/1" stamped in the center of the backstrap, one digit vertical, the other digit horizontal. There is some light circumferential scratching around the side plate screws and the odd ding and handling mark here and there. The revolver times well and locks up as tightly as the day at left Hartford in August 1901, a factory letter is included showing two guns in that shipment going to M Hartley company New York. The gun is pictured in Colts New Service Revolver by Mullin both in full, and a close-up of the caliber marking, there is a short writeup on the gun as well. The revolver was the subject of a "Rampant Colt" article by Mr. Wills in the winter 2008 issue in the "New Discoveries" column. Col. Robert Whittington in his 2009 treatise "Colt New Service, New Service Target and Shooting Master Revolvers" stated that only 16 examples in this caliber are known to have been shipped in total and states there is only one known survivor. This example is that arm, purchased by John and Jan Wills from an antique arms auction in Australia. The arm completely lacks proof marks, suggesting it was likely private-purchased by an Australian officer or even civilian, although the ship date somewhat late for the Boer war. Overall a very fine example of what may be a unique specimen, the only surviving Colt 476 Enfield-chambered New Service Revolver. (36651-77) {C&R} [John and Jan Wills Collection]
