Handsome Custom Engraved Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 459 (Sale Order: 459 of 711)

serial #168215, 38 Special, 5 1/2" modern barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely revolver are finished a nice French gray which leaves the high edges a bright silvery gunmetal with the neatly stippled background accenting a darker gray. The gun is engraved in full coverage with excellent quality loose flowing scroll with gambling vignettes. The flutes have a loose acanthus leaf decoration with the recoil shields showing a federal shield left and an arrowhead right on loading gate. The frame, triggerguard and backstrap are all numbered differently but that is of no consequence on this custom embellished arm. The backstrap is nicely, coarsely checkered its full length and there is a stylized dragon's head atop the backstrap to the rear of the hammer. The gun currently has a very nice pair of antique carved ivory grips showing some mellowing and age cracking along the butts, they are un-numbered but their fit is very good. The right side of the grip is carved in a steer head motif with a silver ring over the right horn and a small silver star at the topmost portion of the grip. The gun times and locks up perfectly, the frame was manufactured in 1897. (36867-3) {ANTIQUE}

Custom Springfield Model 1922 M1 Rifle By Niedner

Lot # 460 (Sale Order: 460 of 711)

serial #20343, 22 LR, 24 1/2" 11-31 dated barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barreled action retains about 98% Niedner-applied rust blue with some minor toning on the high edges and contact points. The bolt body remains bright and shows the nice light random burnishing often seen on these rifles with the bolt handle slightly modified for scope clearance, neatly reblued by Niedner. The striker, shroud and safety show excellent oil quench case-hardening. The bottom metal retains about 95% Niedner blue, showing a bit more toning and wear. The original 1922 stock has been neatly reshaped, remodeled and checkered by Shelhamer. There are flawless bordered checkered panels at the grip and forearm, the forearm panels separated by a thin uncheckered strip down the middle. There has been a nice bone forend tip added and a bone pistolgrip cap with the length of pull to the checkered Niedner buttplate of 13 1/8". There is a nice quick detachable swivel stud along the toeline, the original front hole from the armory swivel neatly filled, and a barrel band swivel stud attached ahead of the forend tip. The rifle is sighted with a Lyman red bead blade in the original banded sight base and there is a Lyman receiver sight on the rear ring. Additionally there are steel target blocks in the armory-supplied holes which mount a JW Fecker telescopic sight with crosshair reticle and slightly cloudy, about very good optics. The scope itself rates very good showing some minor wear, fading and toning to brown. The rifle includes one original magazine, detachable sling swivels, a 3/4" military-style leather sling which is worn but serviceable, the aperture for the peepsight and the filler screws for the barrel and receiver. Included with the rifle is a copy of a Springfield Research Service letter showing shipment to a William Hake of Scarsdale New York in June 1932. Really a very lovely example of a Shelhamer-modified 1922 M1 rifle that likely would perform as good as it looks. (36650-33) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Lot # 461 (Sale Order: 461 of 711)

serial #1277243, 30-06, 24" 4-27 dated barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains about 97% original blue, the only loss being muzzle wear and the sharp edges of the front sight with a few minor handling marks. The receiver shows excellent oil-quenched dark gray case-hardening, toning slightly to pewter on the sharp edges with the ring fading slightly. The bolt body is bright and shows all its original armory polish with some very slight water staining on the handle and knob; it is DC pencil-numbered to the gun. The bolt shroud shows some very good oil-tempered blue with the two-tone safety showing excellent blue along its leading-edge and nice dark gray along its rear edge with a nice wavy separation line. The bottom metal shows a bit more wear retaining perhaps 95% original blue with numerous light scratches and handling marks on the floorplate. The walnut sporter style stock rates excellent with all its armory finish showing only very minor handling marks. The cupped buttplate retains strong traces of original blue and the circled P firing proof on the front of the pistolgrip is crisp. The original front sight is intact as is the armory-installed Lyman receiver sight on the rear ring (the fold-down aperture is no longer present). The rifle comes with a Springfield Research Service letter showing shipment to Elk Grove California to a Mr. Andrew Elliott in September 1927. Really a very handsome example overall which appears to have seen little or no use at Mr. Elliott's hands. (36649-7) {C&R}

Unmarked Lyon & Lyon Custom Mauser Bolt Action Magazine Rifle

Lot # 463 (Sale Order: 463 of 711)

serial #1341, 10.9x72 mm, 25 1/2" part octagon part round Krupp Flusstahl barrel with a very good plus to near excellent bore which shows strong rifling its full length but with some very very light frosting. The metal surfaces retain about 98% plus later, good quality hot immersion blue. The barrel is lightly engraved at its breech and features a full-length integral hand-matted rib, it is marked only "Made in Germany" on its top left and right diagonal flats and is retailer-marked "Lyon & Lyon, Ltd, Calcutta". The bolt body is polished bright and features a Mannlicher Schonauer-style butterknife bolt handle, there is a low scope safety fitted as well. The bottom metal shows remnants of some light pitting beneath the finish and shows light borderline engraving with a checkered thumbprint at the front of the floorplate. The rifle has been restocked in fairly straight-grain English walnut, classic style with a rounded left-side cheekpiece. The stock itself rates excellent and is stamped within the barrel channel "RPS No 41", the lug and bottom of barrel are glass bedded. The stock has nice bordered checkered panels at grip and forearm and has a Winchester model 70-style magnum crossbolt along with a checkered pistolgrip and a solid London guns pad giving a 13 3/4" length of pull. There is a swivel stud along the toeline and another soldered to the underside of the barrel. Rifle is sighted with a simple bead front with a three leaf, one standing two folding, express rear with the receiver rings being professionally drilled and tapped to accept scope bases. Overall a very nicely resurrected rifle, there is some pitting along the side flats at the wood line, some of which is hidden beneath the restocking. The rifle is strangely un-marked by whatever German maker made the rifle for Lyon & Lyon. The underside of the barrel is stamped "10.9" along with "72", slugging the bore reveals a groove diameter of .445"-.446"; the chamber is for a bottlenecked cartridge and not a belted magnum. Really an attractive dangerous game rifle. As with all guns of unknown caliber, a competent gunsmith should determine caliber and check the headspace prior to use. Custom Remington Model 12-C Slide Action Rifle By Bob Owen

Lot # 465 (Sale Order: 465 of 711)

serial #583021, 22 S,L,LR, 24" octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces have toned primarily to a dark gray and plum patina with wear to pewter along the sharp edges and contact points. The barrel has sparsely scattered light pitting and some oxidation staining, primarily confined to the area above the magazine tube on the side and bottom diagonal flats. This rifle was the personal property of stock maker Bob Owen. The checkered pistolgrip Circassian walnut buttstock rates very good with much original varnish and overall minor dings and handling marks, stocked very nicely with very man-sized proportions. It features lovely borderless fleur-de-lis checkered panels left and right with a very nice engraved blued steel gripcap, now faded to pewter, and has an un-engraved oval monogram plate along the toeline, sporting a 13 9/16" length of pull to the checkered and engraved steel buttplate. The stock shows the beginning of a light crack 1" long on its left upper edge, it is unobtrusive and tight. The forend rates very good plus and is near overall checkered, showing some wear to flat-top, in a beautiful fleur-de-lis borderless pattern. The rifle features a Sheard style front sight, no rear seat and a Lyman aperture sight mounted to the top of the triggerplate-receiver extension. Oddly, there are no Remington markings at all on the receiver, the serial number is indeed where it should be on the inside of the trigger plate, the underside of the belly does show the "RW" Remington factory marking, dimensionally it does not appear as though any metal has ever been removed from the receiver. This rifle was owned personally by Bob Owen and at a point in late 1923 early 1924, when he was trying to raise money to buy back stock of nice quality walnut, he sold it to H.P. Sheldon of Vermont. Col. Harold Sheldon became the Vermont Commissioner of Fish and Game in 1921 and eventually the chief U.S. game warden with the Bureau of Biological Survey. He was a prolific writer and editor of "Guns and Game" and a contributor to Field and Stream and others. He wrote the Tranquility series of books and was the fellow who gave the "Bo-Whoop" name to Nash Buckingham's Fox shotgun. Really an absolutely lovely .22 stocked in an absolutely beautiful piece of Circassian by this master craftsman. (36650-63) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Rare Original U.S. Model 1922 Bolt Action Rifle By Springfield Armory

Lot # 466 (Sale Order: 466 of 711)

serial #1721, 22 LR, 24 1/2" 1-23 dated barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains about 75% fading original blue finish, giving it really a darker gray tone, with a number of scars on the front sight band from a removable clip-on sight hood, the sight base itself with some tool marks left and right. The receiver is slightly darker, retaining perhaps 80% original blue, toning to pewter on the sharp edges and contact points. The bottom metal has faded primarily to a dull gunmetal gray with some brown toning and light dings and scratches. The original bolt is present and shows some original bright polish but with speckled light oxidation staining, retaining its original 2-prong firing pin. Striker, safety and shroud are dark gray patina. The walnut pistolgrip stock rates about very good as lightly cleaned with overall minor dings and handling marks, there is no firing proof present on the front of the grip. The original cupped buttplate is intact as are the swivels and one original magazine is included. The original front sight blade is in place as is the Lyman receiver sight on the rear ring. .48 Cal, 25 3/4" part octagon part round barrel with a knurled ring at the point of transition, and a bright excellent 6-groove bore. The rifle is sighted with a globe front sight with interchangeable inserts (not included) adjustable for windage, modern blued steel sporting v-notch rear and a nice lollipop peep mounted on the tang, adjustable for elevation. The barrel is a nice deep plum brown with some lighter streaks of pewter, especially on the sharp edges, the hooked breech showing some nice case colors on the top flats. The top barrel flat is maker marked "Wm R Schaefer Maker Boston" and the top round of barrel is marked "Francis Brooks West Medford" by the maker. The tang is a mottled gray and brown case-hardened patina. The lockplate is unmarked and shows a mottled blue-gray-brown case-hardened patina which is lovely, the hammer showing what appears to be an old repair to the spur. The under rib has two undecorated ramrod thimbles, there is a lightly grooved tailpipe, single forward spur, single rearward flourish triggerguard, the triggerplate showing a lightly sculpted front extension; all this metal a very pleasing dark mottled gray and brown patina that is overall smooth. The stock rates excellent with much original varnish and only minor dings and handling marks from the years. It appears to be English walnut and shows some stunning grain in the butt, also with some very minor drying cracks from the years, with the wrist neatly, coarsely checkered. The stock features a pewter forend tip and has a smooth long tang steel buttplate which shows some nice mottled case-hardening. The rifle features double set triggers and him and a dual-acting lock. There is an antique mahogany ramrod included but it is likely a replacement and not original equipment. The rearmost tang screw has had a portion break off, it could be repaired if one wished and the barrel has been drilled and tapped just ahead of the breech for a steel target block which is not present. Francis Brooks was a Harvard graduate and a local Medford entrepreneur involved in a range of businesses and philanthropic enterprises, his family had roots in the Massachusetts Bay Colony back to the early 1600s. Overall a really lovely Schaefer-made rifle that certainly could be used while maintaining excellent investment potential. Very Spartan, very graceful.
