Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Rifle

Lot # 51 (Sale Order: 51 of 711)

serial #29990, 45-90, 26" part round part octagon barrel with half magazine and a bright excellent bore. This fabulous rifle has lots of special order features which include: part round barrel, short magazine, fancy wood, checkered pistolgrip, shotgun buttplate, single set trigger and sling swivels. The barrel and exposed section of magazine retain about 80% original blue with loss on sides of barrel ahead of forend where metal has turned to a pleasing gray brown patina with strong blue on all other areas. The action retains about 85% original color case-hardened finish with most loss on belly where the metal shows a smooth silver gray patina. The sides of action have mellowed some but still show nice contrast, particularly on the left side. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of highly figured American black walnut and rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with crisp checkering. The pistolgrip is the early rounded type with ebony insert and the smooth steel shotgun buttplate bears a pleasing gray brown patina. The left side of the tang and the top tang inlet of stock both have matching assembly numbers "1060" with the tang being additionally marked "S XXX". The rifle is sighted with standard open barrel sights. The rifle letters as follows: Rifle, 45-90, 1/2 octagon, set trigger, checkered stock, pistol grip, Lyman front, 1/2 magazine, shotgun butt, sling swivels, 4 cartridges and shows a ship date of July 18, 1889. A simply fabulous deluxe 1886 rifle with lots of cool options. Investment quality. (16520-2272) {ANTIQUE} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Winchester Model 1894 Trapper Carbine

Lot # 52 (Sale Order: 52 of 711)

serial #639712, 30 WCF, 15" barrel with a very good bore. The barrel and full length magazine have mostly toned to a speckled pewter-brown patina with scattered oxidation staining including several handling marks however there are generous traces of original finish remaining in protected areas. The frame has completely toned to pewter-brown with light remnants of pitting in a few sporadic clusters. The lever and hammer still have traces of original color case-hardened finish with most of the surfaces toned to a dark brown patina. The straight grip carbine style gumwood buttstock and forend rate good overall with several dings and dents present as well as a round plug or repair at the toe of the buttstock. The wood is no longer flush around the edges of the tangs or receiver and there are a few cracks on both the buttstock and forend ranging from 1" to 2 1/2". The original sights and saddle ring are present however the rear ladder style carbine sight loosely pivots on its hinge. The rifle comes with its original BATFE letter exempting it from the provisions of the NFA by serial number. A great little trapper carbine with some character but a sound investment piece nevertheless. (156520-1962) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Very Rare Winchester Model 1892 Special Order Short Rifle

Lot # 53 (Sale Order: 53 of 711)

serial #102645, 38 WCF, 15" barrel with a fair to near good bore showing pitting throughout however the rifling is still fairly crisp. This is a truly very rare and interesting Model 1892 rifle. The special ordered short barrel, magazine tube and forend cap display even pleasing pewter and light brown patina throughout with scattered light and some moderate pitting and handling marks present. The pleasing brown patina continues throughout the frame, giving it a somewhat honey color when held in the right light, with pitting primarily on the top and left sides, some more moderate. A handful of minute scratch marks surround one of the screw heads on the left side of the frame. The lever and hammer exhibit a few light pits and display a slightly darker case hardened brown patina. The straight grip walnut buttstock with crescent buttplate and forend rate about good to perhaps fair with some lightly added finish as well as several bruises and dings. The buttstock shows two small chips at its leading lower edge and a small crack along its left side and fits somewhat loosely to the frame. The forend shows a crack at its right side at nosecap, the left side with a 1 1/2" sliver missing in the same area; there are some moderate bruises at its left rear. A sling swivel has been installed in the toeline and it appears as though a hole in the forend has been filled from a previous swivel stud. The original front nickel blade sight and rear ladder style carbine sight are present. A letter from the Cody Firearms Museum and a copy of a hand written letter from Mr. George Madis are included. These documents provide statistical data and verify that it is indeed an 1892 short rifle with a special ordered barrel. The rifle also comes with its original BATFE letter exempting it from the provisions of the NFA by serial number. Dated 1899, this neatly configured rifle is a truly rare find and a must have for the advanced Winchester lever gun collector. (156548-2) {C&R}

Winchester Model 1892 Trapper Carbine

Lot # 54 (Sale Order: 54 of 711)

serial #389059, 32 WCF, 16" barrel with a fair bore showing dark moderate pitting throughout. The barrel, magazine tube and barrel band display some handling marks and a few impact marks at the muzzle end of the magazine; the surfaces are a nice even lightly pitted pewter patina with traces of brown due to oxidation staining. The frame is mostly pewter with light brown patches of surface oxidation and a dark section of brown patina surrounding the saddlering stud with some light scratches and sparse pinprick pitting; the letters "F" and "R" and what appears to be "H" have been scratched into the left leading side of the frame. The right side of the frame appears to have been lightly cleaned, most likely with steel wool. The hammer and lever are toned to pewter as well with some minor oxidation staining. The plain straight grip gumwood buttstock and forend rate good overall with several dents and bruises. The buttstock has the two letters "F / R" carved into the left side and there is a grouping of small circles with a pea sized circle behind the cluster at the rear of the lower tang that appear to have been made with a punch of some sort. The leading top right corner of the wrist has a 3/4" chip missing and there is a 3/4" crack at the rear of the upper tang. The forend has two pea-sized circle marks on the rear left side, identical in size to the one on the buttstock. The front sight is a Rocky Mountain brass blade sight and the rear is a Winchester Express multi-leaf sight. A fine little trapper's carbine with plenty of character. (156520-1795) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Rare Winchester Model 1892 Trapper Carbine

Lot # 55 (Sale Order: 55 of 711)

serial #235694, 44-40, 17" barrel with full magazine and a very good bore that shows a little light pitting, mostly just ahead of the chamber. This carbine has an extremely rare barrel length with not more than a few believed to have ever been produced. Like most Trappers, this carbine is well used but generally quite honest. The metal surfaces of carbine retain a gray brown patina with scattered pitting in some areas. The plain walnut buttstock and forend also show a good deal of use and rate very good with one notable area of wear to the wood in toeline just behind the lower tang. The forend is the correct shorter than standard forend found on Trapper carbines. The rear sight appears to be a correct replacement, otherwise everything on this carbine appears to be original. Carbine comes with a factory letter confirming this as a 44-40 carbine with a 17" barrel. An extremely rare '92 Trapper. (16548-1) {C&R}

Tipping & Lawden Model 1A Treasure Chest Cased And Engraved Pepperbox

Lot # 58 (Sale Order: 58 of 711)

serial #1312, 22 RF, 2 5/8" four barrel cluster with poor bores. This pepperbox is nicely relief floral scroll engraved in quite full coverage. The barrel is cleaned and badly pitted (actually through to the bore in a couple spots) and shows no engraving or thumbprints. The frame retains a good deal of original gold wash and has a pleasing appearance. The carved ivory grips rate about excellent. The pistol comes in an extra-deluxe brass bound treasure chest case with engraved hinges and lock components. The shield on the lid is engraved with the initials "PW" and the riband beneath is engraved "Hinstock Hall". The brass bindings and other furniture on case bear a pleasing patina with generous traces of original gold wash finish present. According to Mr. Rigg's notes, the intials are those of "Phillip Wilson" who he lists as the Squire of Hinstock Hall. A cursory internet search found a Phillip Wilson who "lived at Hinstock Hall". The condition of the case is excellent with engraved and gold washed oiler, ivory handled turn screw with engraved and gold washed collar along with an ivory handled and gold washed steel wiper. A fabulous set with a horrible set of barrels. There is no personalization on the gun itself to Phillip Wilson. This is a good candidate for the fitting of another set of barrels. Exquisite Winchester Pre '64 Model 70 Gold Inlaid And Carved Factory Custom Rifle Of Dr. Russell Smi

Lot # 59 (Sale Order: 59 of 711)

serial #57159, 220 Swift, 26" barrel with a bright excellent, likely unfired, bore. This lovely arm is very much a work of art and was one of five such arms rifles ordered by Dr. Russell C Smith in the late 1940s. This example retains all of its original factory deep blue finish with the barrel being neatly satin-finished stainless steel with a bright-polished muzzle. There is exceptional flowing scroll covering the entire action and bottom metal with the rear sight boss and first 3 1/2" of the barrel sharing the same lovely treatment. The area around the muzzle and front sight ramp are neatly engraved for about 4 1/2" and the bolt shroud and the entire ring and base set also embellished with the lovely flowing scroll. This outstanding work was all done by George Ulrich and he outdid himself, also engraving each screw, whether action, sling swivel, buttplate etc. right down to the factory slot blanks in the front sight ramp and rear sight boss. He has executed beautiful gold borderline engraving on floorplate, receiver and barrel breech. There are three game scene vignettes on the rifle with the animals inlaid in gold. The left rear of the receiver shows a panther on a tree limb, snarling, claws bared; the detail is really wonderful. The right side of the rear receiver ring shows a snarling wolf's head, against a stippled background, again the detail astounding. The floorplate vignette features a standing pronghorn buck with a recumbent doe, amidst the prickly pear cactus of a desert scene. The bow of the guard has the good doctors initials inlaid, monogrammed in gold "RCS" and the trigger has been gold plated. The bolt body shows some very light operational marks but it's factory jeweling is still lovely, it is appropriately numbered to the gun. The follower as well shows very nice jeweling which matches the bolt, the extractor retains all its original factory blue and the bolt knob has very nice dual checkered panels top and bottom. As-mentioned there is a factory-installed Griffin & Howe quick detachable scope base and ring set on the rifle, the receiver being pre-war style and is not drilled and tapped on the tops of the rings. The scope base and rings are equally engraved and they support a Lyman Alaskan 2 1/2 X telescopic sight with fine crosshair and dot reticle, showing bright excellent optics. The rifle is stocked Super Grade style with low comb and a rounded left-side cheekpiece with a nice ebony forend tip and inletted sling swivel bases showing nice cross-hatch engraving (the swivels are included). The stock rates excellent to very nearly as-new with a widely scattered, very light handling mark here or there, one must really search for them. The rifle is checkered and carved with beautiful borderless fleur-de-lis and riband patterns, flawlessly executed, the fleur-de-lis accented with fine background stippling. In addition to the grip panels, there is a top-of-wrist panel which flows gracefully rearward around both sides of the point of comb, the forearm pattern is wrap-around. The checkered steel buttplate is accented with loose flowing scroll around its periphery and at the center diamonds through-which the screws pass; the blued steel gripcap is engraved in the same fashion. The stock shows some very lovely grain figure in the area of the butt both left and right, this rifle in fact having the most beautiful wood of the five. This exceptional rifle is well-documented and has had a good deal written about it, it is published in The Model 70 Winchester 1937-1964, by Dean H Whitaker along with its four brothers (a copy of this book is included with the gun, signed and dedicated by the author). Really the pinnacle of Winchester custom shop work, the type and style of which is normally reserved for kings and heads of state. Factory engraved Pre '64 Model 70s are a rarity amongst themselves. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the advanced Winchester Model 70 collector to obtain one of the Holy Grails of Winchester model 70 collecting. (36652-27) {C&R}

Lot # 60 (Sale Order: 60 of 711)

serial #87160, 300 H&H Magnum, 26" special order stainless steel barrel with a bright excellent, likely unfired, bore. The metal surfaces on this lovely gun retain 99% plus original deep factory blue, the barrel satin with a polished muzzle. The bolt body, extractor and follower are nicely factory jeweled and remain bright, the bolt handle with lovely checkered panels top and bottom which has left an attractive uncheckered band between the two with a light border along its periphery; the bolt is DC pencil-numbered to the gun. The stock is lovely and very much a work of art. The rifle is stocked classic style, low comb with a rounded left-side cheekpiece. The stock itself rates about excellent showing some very sparsely scattered, very light handling marks with the stock itself showing absolutely lovely fiddleback grain pretty much its full-length. The pistolgrip is checkered flawlessly in a wrap-over pattern with neat half-circle accents to the rear of each panel just beneath the point of comb. The forearm pattern as well is wrap-around and is borderless. The floorplate is neatly factory-stamped "Super Grade" with the bow of the triggerguard inlaid in gold "RCS", the trigger as well being gold plated. The front sight ramp and rear sight boss have each been neatly fitted with slot blanks and mounted to the receiver in the factory holes by Bausch & Lomb adjustable scope bases is a Balfor telescopic sight with post and crosshair reticle and bright clear optics. The scope itself rates excellent and is very nearly as-new like the rifle itself. The gun shows one tiny detractor only, barely worth mention, 7" from the muzzle on the lower right side of the barrel is a small spot which has flaked to silver, it is tiny, about 3/32" round. The rifle is well known and documented and is featured in The Rifleman's Rifle by Roger Rule in the section on "special orders", considered by Rule to be a Class 1 special order rifle. Factory carved rifles are a great rarity amongst Winchesters, this example flawlessly executed, very tasteful with really handsome grain. A superlative rifle. (36652-28) {C&R}

Sharps Breech-Loading Single Shot First Type Percussion Pistol

Lot # 66 (Sale Order: 66 of 711)

serial #327, .34 caliber, 5" round barrel. This is a nice honest Sharps single shot pistol. The left side of the frame is marked in oval border "SHARPS PATENT / ARMS MFed / FAIRMOUNT / PHILA. PA". Metal surfaces of the pistol are general a mostly smooth gray brown patina with some faded original color case-hardened finish visible on the frame which is now a pewter color. The left side of the frame had a round patch of mostly light pitting with perhaps a few moderate pits present. Frame markings remain clear and legible. The two-piece walnut grips rate near very good retaining a small percentage of original finish but having never been sanded and they fit beautifully. It is interesting to note that the Sharps Company in Hartford refused to produce this pistol, which was one of the major causes of Christian Sharps leaving the company and moving to Philadelphia. Overall a very good example of these scarce pistols of which only 500 are believed to have been produced. (16889-201) {ANTIQUE}

serial #2674, .44 caliber, 7 1/16" octagon barrel with a very good bright bore. These revolvers are supposed to have 8" barrels however there seems to be some variation in the barrel lengths. If this revolver was shortened it was very early on in its life. The top of the barrel shows proper "B.F. JOSLYN / PATD. MAY 4, 1858" marking which remains fully legible. All visible numbers are matching and the revolver is fitted with its original steel buttcap which is numbered "2674". The metal surfaces of the revolver bear a lovely even gray brown patina with a little scattered old light oxidation staining and a little light salt & pepper pitting. The iron surfaces of the revolver bear a gray brown patina with some scattered light pitting and a couple patches on the cylinder that are bordering on moderate. The brass triggerguard retains over 90% original silver-plated finish with exposed brass showing a lovely tarnish. The one-piece walnut grip rates about excellent with 80% original finish remaining and with a little light wear along the bottom edges. Overall this is a very honest and quite nice Fluted Army. Rare U.S. Walker Replacement "Fluck" Dragoon

Lot # 70 (Sale Order: 70 of 711)

serial #2465, .44 caliber, 7 1/2" barrel with an excellent bore. This is a fabulous example of these extremely rare and highly desirable Colt revolvers. Thought for years to be Walker replacement Dragoons or simply "Pre First Model Dragoons" a 1998 study claims that these revolvers were part of a separate second contract with the government. Flayderman notes that the 1998 study was based on the inspection of "well over a dozen" revolvers in a thousand revolver block and states that that is too small of a sampling to draw any definitive conclusions. The revolver shows the tiny early style serial numbers and has a wonderful, well-defined rolled pressure ridge around the periphery of the cylinder, a characteristic only found on these Fluck Dragoons and the Colt Walker Dragoons. This revolver remains in lovely condition. The barrel and cylinder retain a pleasing mostly smooth brown patina with a patch of light pitting on the round portion of the barrel, the barrel address and sub-inspectors initial "P" on left side of barrel lug remain clear and legible. The cylinder shows about 60% of its Texas Ranger and Indian fight scene with "MODEL USMR" and "COLT'S PATENT" remaining mostly visible with the tiny serial number still clear and legible. The frame is a pleasing even gray patina with what looks to be some faded case-hardened finish blended within the patina. The brass grip frame bears a pleasing mellow patina. The one-piece walnut grip rates very good probably having been lightly refinished long ago and showing no visible cartouches. This revolver shows very little use with a bore that is quite crisp and with clean nipples and nipple recesses. A very honest and very fine example of these ultra-desirable Colt revolvers. Marlin Ballard No. 9 Union Hill Rifle

The checkered pistol grip buttstock and forend are excellent overall retaining 95% original finish and showing strong checkering. The light Swiss buttplate shows mostly a smooth gray patina with perhaps some traces of original nickel plating in some areas. Marlin Ballard Off-Hand Target Rifle

Lot # 72 (Sale Order: 72 of 711)

serial #18215, 38-55, 30" part round part octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a handsome and very nice rifle which has undergone some honest modifications over the years and basically conforms to the No. 6 1/2 pattern rifle. The barrel, action, forend and stock tang all bear matching numbers while the stock and buttplate are unnumbered and appear to be superbly crafted 20th century replacements. The forend has a subtle schnabel tip with an ebony insert and is checkered in an unusual pattern being fully checkered from the forend screw back to the action. There is evidence of where a palm rest was one located but this has been neatly removed and checkered over blending in quite nicely. The barrel retains about 90% evenly thinning original blue finish with some loss around the rear dovetail where a sight was once present. The action retains 95% original color case-hardened finish which remains quite vivid. The full loop lever is nickel plated and had a small wooden insert at its rear end and the rifle is equipped with a single trigger. The checkered walnut buttstock and forend rate excellent except as noted above and both retain 95% finish. The pistol grip buttstock is likely a John Wills custom replacement as the dimensions, style, fit and finish are perfect. The rifle is sighted with a windgauge front, blank in rear slot and a mid-range folding Vernier tang mounted peepsight. A handsome Ballard rifle with lots of color that should perform beautifully.
