Remington Rolling Block No. 7 Rifle

Lot # 76 (Sale Order: 76 of 711)

serial #300316, 25-25, 26" part round part octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a handsome rifle that retains lots of original finish. The "Remington Arms Co." marked barrel retains 95% original blue finish but has unfortunately been drilled and tapped for scope blocks with one of the five holes being within the barrel marking. The action retains 95% strong original color case-hardened finish with no alterations. The checkered pistol grip buttstock and forend rate excellent with 90% original finish remaining and with strong checkering. The forend has an ebony insert within its schnabel tip and there are five neatly added and perfectly spaced small brass brads in toeline just behind the pistolgrip. The rifle is fitted with its original factory nickel plated Swiss buttplate which is properly numbered on the inside. The rifle is sighted with a beaded blade front and folding tang mounted rear peepsight. This is a fabulous rifle with a few extra holes - a great candidate for restoration, or a handsome and completely honest rifle the way it is. (16520-635) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Lot # 77 (Sale Order: 77 of 711)

serial #K157453, 32 S&W Long, 6" pinned barrel with an excellent bright bore. The metal surfaces retain about 97% blue finish with some light silvering at the muzzle, high edge wear, cylinder turn ring and some scattered light scratches. The standard hammer and trigger retain strong case-hardened colors with edge wear on the trigger and bright silvering on the hammer spur and sides from use. The walnut diamond checkered Magna grips are not correctly numbered to the gun but are in near excellent condition with a few handling blemishes. All appropriate parts on this five screw post war revolver have correct matching serial numbers. The revolver is equipped with a Patridge front sight and micrometer black adjustable rear sight. Included is an original factory gold box with blue printing that is correctly end labeled to the gun but is not numbered. This is a fine example of the scarce K-32 masterpiece. Smith & Wesson Model 1950 357 Magnum Hand Ejector Revolver

Lot # 78 (Sale Order: 78 of 711)

serial #S152216, 357 Magnum, 5" pinned barrel with an excellent bore. This pre-model 27 revolver retains about 90% original blue finish with most of the loss to forward edge wear on the frame, barrel and cylinder. There is further high edge wear on the metal surfaces, flaking finish on the cylinder from holster wear and scattered light scratches. The standard hammer and trigger retain fairly strong case-hardened colors that have started to thin from use. The diamond checkered walnut Magna grips with S&W medallion are in very good condition with light compression damage to the diamond points, scratches, light dents and minute scuffs. The grips are correctly numbered to the revolver and all appropriate parts have correct matching serial numbers. The rear micrometer sight has a black blade and the front Baughman ramp sight has been modified with the addition of a brass colored insert. Included is an original factory gold box with blue printing that is correctly end labeled and hand numbered to the gun. The box contains a bore brush. This is a nice example of a post war 357 Magnum with some light but honest use. (86520-2144) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

British 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By George Gibbs

Lot # 79 (Sale Order: 79 of 711)

serial #60812, 30-06, 24" barrel with a bright about excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this fine rifle retain about 95-97% original blue, the loss is due primarily only to some light fading and high edge wear, with the left-side races of the receiver honed bright. The bottom metal shows slightly more high edge wear and there is a minor peripheral scratch at the rear guard screw hole. The bolt body shows only some very light operational marks and the shroud shows some very nice color case-hardening. "Safe" and "Ready" as well as the "Off" and On" on the magazine cut-off are inlaid in both silver and gold respectively. The receiver and first 3" of the barrel show deep relief oakleaf and acorn engraving with the receiver ring showing a standing bear amidst a woodland backdrop with a rococo embellishment. The floorplate and guard of the bow each show game scene vignettes of a moose and bighorn sheep, also with the same excellent quality oakleaf and acorn, the front extension is signed "NA". The bolt handle shows the same nice quality foliate and oakleaf engraving which continues onto the knob, its underside showing two nicely checkered panels; the bolt shroud as well is engraved in a similar fashion. The gun is stocked classic style in a nice grade of English walnut, the stock rating very good plus with only minor dings and handling marks from careful use afield. The stock features a flared shadow line left-side cheekpiece and shows some really lovely grain, with very nice fiddle back on the right side at the butt. Both grip and forend are flawlessly checkered with mullered borders, the forend with a wrap-around diamond pattern. There is a lovely engraved trapdoor pistolgrip cap with spare sight within. There is a nice bone forend tip and the butt features a checkered trapdoor plate with foliate engraving at the widow's peak for a 14" length of pull. The rifle is equipped with 1 1/4" swivels and the magnum crossbolt heads are neatly engraved as well. The oval monogram plate along the toeline is engraved "HB" for Henry Brace, George Gibbs' representative in Canada. The rifle is sighted with a banded sporting front sight with a standard bead and flip-up moonglow post; its lovely fire-blued hood is intact. The rear sight is a 3 folding-leaf express style on raised base, graduated for 100, 300 and 500 yards; both front ramp and rear ramp show nice oakleaf engraving along their sides. The rear ring has a maker-supplied Lyman receiver sight, the base engraved identically as the balance of the arm. The barrel is marked "George Gibbs Bristol 35 Savile Row London & Vancouva Canada" (sic) (perhaps the engraver was an emigrant from Boston). Interestingly the underside of the striker shroud has been fitted with two small set screws which are neatly honed and bear up on the rearmost surfaces of the action races, giving the bolt a sturdy and a snug fit in the battery position and help to maintain a consistent sear-striker relationship for trigger pull consistency. The rifle comes in a canvas leather and brass reinforced luggage case with green velvet interior and black and gold George Gibbs Limited manufacturers label on the interior. The rifle must be taken down to fit the case; both screw slots show some light damage evident. Included is an oil bottle, 3 turn screws, a cleaning implement pouch (no implements are present) and a tan canvas Kerr gun sling. It is surmised by Mr. Petrov that this rifle was an NRA sales rifle, and as such would have had a specially selected star gauged barrel. The rifle is treated in detail on pages 136-141 of Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century. Overall a really super British magazine sporting rifle, beautifully embellished, still in a very fine state of condition, very top shelf all the way. (36650-62) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

serial #S144436, 45 ACP / AR, 5 1/2" pinned and tapered barrel with an excellent bore. This mid '50's era revolver retains about 98% original blue finish with a light turn ring on the cylinder, a few scattered light scratches and faint edge wear on the muzzle. The trigger and hammer retain dynamic case-hardened colors with very light operation marks. The diamond checkered walnut factory grips with silver S&W medallions are correctly numbered to the gun and remain in like new condition. All appropriate parts are correctly numbered to the frame. This five screw revolver includes an original factory box that is correctly end labeled to the gun and contains a pair of half moon clips. Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By John Oberlies

Lot # 81 (Sale Order: 81 of 711)

serial #1366539, 30-06, 24" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 95% original blue, the loss is due primarily to light fading, high edge and contact point wear and the expected light scratches and handling marks that come from the years. The bolt body remains mostly bright with overall nice mottled, very nearly random, burnishing which continues onto the bolt handle, the knob is overall very nicely, very neatly stippled. The bolt the show a few spots of minor oxidation staining but they are unobtrusive. The striker and shroud retain excellent oil quenched case-hardened colors with the safety showing the same attractive burnishing as the body of the bolt, the pattern continues on the faces of the magazine cut off. The bottom metal has faded slightly more retaining perhaps 80% original blue, again the chief loss being fading on the carry point with minor handling marks. The original NRA sporter stock has been smartly converted by Mr. Oberlies and rates very good plus to excellent with only very sparsely scattered very light handling marks. The comb flutes have been deepened, the forend reshaped into a very nice schnabel and the rear swivel inlet very neatly plugged. The stock is a very neatly checkered with a bordered pattern with very Art-Deco style panels on grip and forend, the grip with a very nice hard rubber S-shaped cap installed. The original cupped checkered steel buttplate, numbered to the stock, is still in place for a 13 5/8" length of pull. The stocks recoil crossbolts are still in place and remnants of the circled P firing proof are still evident on the face of the pistolgrip with two nice silver diamond inlays on each left and right stock flat. The rifle is equipped with a swivel stud along the toeline and a nice barrel band stud ahead of the schnabel. The gun is sighted with a banded sporting ramp front sight with a finely matted face and a Marble Sheards style bead, the rear receiver bridge with a Lyman aperture sight installed. A previous owner has lightly scratched his initials "BW" into the bottom face of the pistolgrip, it is mostly unobtrusive and does not take away from the lovely craftsmanship of this very nice sporter from this very rarely-encountered Ohio craftsman. The rifle is listed by serial number in SRS "Summary of DCM Rifle Sales 1922-1942" as a "sporter". A really super Oberlies sporting rifle. (36650-79) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By August Pachmayr

Lot # 82 (Sale Order: 82 of 711)

serial #1231127, 30-06, 24" 9-21 dated barrel with a bright about excellent bore. The barreled action retains about 95-97% maker blue, the loss is due primarily to even fading and some light high edge and contact point wear. The bolt shows only light operational wear marks with the extractor toning primarily to pewter, the handle neatly bent at the knob, the knob itself with two nicely checkered round panels top and bottom. The bottom metal shows a bit more wear and toning to pewter, the floorplate actually showing a more contemporary refinish. The rifle is stocked very gracefully in a nice grade of American black walnut, classic style without cheekpiece, the stock rating very good plus with nearly all its original varnish and the very minor dings and handling marks one would expect from a hunted arm; there are the beginnings of two light cracks at the rear of the very nicely narrowed receiver tang, they appear tight and likely do not need to be addressed. The rifle features beautiful checkered grip panels left and right with fleur-de-lis at their front and some lovely diminutive scroll accents along the rear of each panel. The forearm shows equally nice panels left and right, also with fleur-de-lis accents. The stock features a nice ebony forend tip and a black hard rubber grip cap with a solid red rifle pad giving a 13 3/4" length of pull. There is a shepherd's crook style swivel eyelet along the toeline and another soldered to the underside of the barrel. The rifle is sighted with a simple brass bead front sight in the original banded front ramp with a long-leaf Lyman receiver sight on the rear ring. In addition to the Pachmayr narrowing of the tang we see Gus's signature sculpting of the receiver ring bolster on the right side of the front ring. This rifle is pictured in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century, volume 2 in the chapter on Pachmayr. Overall a very lovely rifle showing the quality workmanship and neat little signature features Mr. Pachmayr was known for, his rifles rarely encountered on the open marketplace. Rare Target Model Roberts & Kimball Magazine Sporting Rifle

Lot # 83 (Sale Order: 83 of 711)

serial #106, 257 Roberts, 26" light target barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 95% original blue on the barreled action, the loss is due primarily to some even wear but confined mostly along the left edge of the barrel for about 12", also showing some very light oxidation along this area, some which may be slightly more moderate; the bottom metal shows toning to brown and a dark gray-blue. The action races are honed bright as is the extractor with the bolt body nicely burnished in a cross-hatch pattern. The rifle is stocked classic-style in a very nice grade of English walnut, showing some nice slab-sawn figure in the area of the butt. The arm features a flared left-side cheekpiece with nice shadow line, a horn forend tip, hard rubber gripcap, European style swivels and a checkered steel Winchester-style buttplate for a 13 1/2" length of pull to the front trigger. There is a silver oval monogram plate along the toeline, it is un-engraved, and the recoil lug area of the stock is neatly stamped "S A Leonard". The arm features double-set triggers which are nicely checkered and rifle is maker drilled and tapped for steel target blocks (two are present), as well the receiver is maker drilled and tapped for a more conventional scope base of one-piece construction. The bolt handle has been gracefully low swept and features nicely checkered teardrop panels on the knob, the shroud having been fitted with a Buehler low scope safety. The top of the barrel is neatly engraved "Roberts Target Model Roberts & Kimball Woburn Mass." and the front ring of the receiver neatly matted with a small thumbprint of checkering on the floorplate, the action screws lightly floral engraved, the front screw showing some light slot damage. The rifle mounts a J. W. Fecker 1 5/8" 12X telescopic sight serial no. 11400, with range adjustment, Fecker rings, crosshair reticle and about excellent optics. The scope rates excellent externally and includes its lense covers. A dossier of information on the rifle builder's histories is included, the "Roberts" involved being none other than Ned Roberts himself, also including a photocopy of some personal correspondence from Ned to Harvey Donaldson telling him about his newest endeavor (this plan to build fine Mauser-based custom sporting and target rifles), and photocopies of articles from The American Rifleman and related paper. The firm is discussed in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century where Mr. Petrov mentions that Leonard did all their stock work and also mentions that the firm started numbering at serial no. 100, this then being the sixth gun produced; also hypothesizing that it is likely less than a couple dozen guns could have been manufactured as the firm was so short-lived. Really a super rifle exhibiting exceptional design and execution, Roberts himself was to target each one and provide a copy of said target with each gun. (36760-1) {C&R}

The Colonel Townsend Whelen 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By Wundhammer

Lot # 84 (Sale Order: 84 of 711)

serial #369038, 30-06, 24" 6-09 dated barrel with a very good bore showing good evident rifling but with minor frosting its full-length, more prominent nearer the throat. The arm is in quite good condition considering the use it saw at the hands of Col. Whelen, and later his guide and good friend Stanley Clark. Wundhammer was a German immigrant who learned his trade in Germany at the hands of no less a famous German master as Kuchenreuter himself, and then Steyr before coming to America and eventually settling in Los Angeles. He began work here as the right hand man of Henry Slotterbeck and would carry on Slotterbeck's business after his untimely death. The barrel retains about 85% original blue, the loss due to honest even fading and wear, showing some sparsely scattered light pinprick pits. The receiver retains some remnants of mottled gray oil-quenched case-hardening, the balance toning to a mottled silvery case-hardened patina. The bottom metal, likely replaced by Whelen when he gifted the rifle to Clark, has toned down to a dull pewter and brown patina showing some light oxidation consistent with the carry point of a used firearm. The bolt is a darker gray and brown with the knob toning primarily to silver, flattened and checkered on its underside by Wundhammer. The gun is stocked classic style with a left-side dual beaded cheekpiece, commonly referred to these days as a "Whelen style" after the good colonel's preference, and Oberndorf sidepanels, a feature Wundhammer used for a very short period of time. The stock itself rates good to perhaps near very good, with overall dings and handling marks from the years of use afield, the checkering worn now nearly smooth and with a 3" crack on the left side from the magazine cutoff forwards toward the front guard screw and another emanating from it slightly rearward, these are not structural and could be arrested if one wished; there is an additional tiny chip at the rear of the tang which is still in place. The grooved trapdoor butt is in place as is the beautifully engraved steel gripcap and the face of the trigger is neatly grooved. Townsend Whelen had an ornately engraved floorplate and triggerguard on the arm with the insignia of the Campfire Club of America, a very exclusive upstate New York hunting and shooting club, doubtless it was removed when he took the arm hunting in Canada with the intention to gift the rifle to his friend and guide Stanley Clark. There is a scant schnabel tip, sling swivels and the length of pull is 14 1/2". The rifle is sighted with a Sheard brass bead in the original Springfield front sight ramp and there is a prototype Lyman 48 sight on the rear receiver ring marked "patent pending" and numbered by the manufacturer as No. 4, doubtless sent to Whelen for T&E. Perhaps the nicest feature of the rifle is the fact that it is engraved at the breech with what Mr. Petrov identifies as the Whelen family crest. At some point over the years there have been 4 drilled and tapped holes atop the barrel for steel target blocks, they are now neatly plugged with no blocks present. This rifle is discussed at length in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century, volume 2. Really a wonderful and honest Wundhammer owned by one of the most famous, influential and legendary "grand old men of gunning" to ever step foot afield or pen a line. We have all heard the old saw "if only this gun could talk" and treat the phrase with a ho-hum and a roll of our eyes; if ever there were a rifle that phrase was applicable to, and you really wished it were true, this is the arm. Rare Custom Takedown 1903 Rifle By Barney Worthen

Lot # 85 (Sale Order: 85 of 711)

serial #290743, 30-06, 24" barrel with a very good plus bore which shows strong rifling but with light frosting within the grooves. The metal surfaces retain about 98% excellent quality restored rust blue with the bolt body being bright, the underside of the knob is neatly checkered in a circular pattern. The rifle is stocked classic style without cheekpiece in a nice grade of English walnut and rates very good plus showing some minor dings and handling marks and a bit of added finish. The pistolgrip shows nice checkered panels with mullered borders while the forend has a nice wraparound diamond pattern, also with mullered borders and showing a very nice schnabel tip with a tasteful horn insert. The pistolgrip as well shows a nice horn gripcap with an un-engraved silver monogram plate at its center, the length of pull to the checkered steel Winchester model 70-style buttplate is 13 1/2". The rifle is sighted with a nice sporting ramp front which holds a King bead sight and there is a Lyman receiver sight on the rear bridge. Additionally the left side of the receiver shows vacant holes for a one-time present Griffin & Howe style scope base, this stock was never inletted for such a base. The tang has been neatly narrowed and the dual stage taken out of the trigger. This rifle is very nearly the mirror image of Gus Pachmayr's takedown system, there being a takedown plunger on the barrel half of the rifle, whereas Pachmayr's was on the action half. Another neat feature developed by Mr. Worthen is a spring-loaded plunger on the front of the bolt's safety lug. This plunger engages a detent in the rear of the extractor and is designed to keep the bolt in the downwards and fully closed position when the arm is in-battery. An excellent feature for a dangerous game rifle, this assures that in no way can the bolt handle be partially lifted accidentally by brush or other means, ensuring that upon the fall of the firing pin ignition will be achieved rather than the striker using all its energy to close a partially opened bolt handle. This gun is pictured and discussed in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century. The barrel is marked along its top "Made by Barney H Worthen San Francisco", the marking is slightly light along its front edge. The rifle barrel mounts solidly and is a very handsome and well-executed arm overall. (36650-71) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammer Pistol

Lot # 86 (Sale Order: 86 of 711)

serial #27073, 38 Rimless Smokeless, 4 1/2" barrel with a bright excellent bore with just a tiny bit of frosting immediately ahead of chamber. This is the standard production model with spur hammer. The condition of the pistol is very nice with the slide retaining about 80% bright original blue finish with most loss being on the left side of the slide where there some flaking with the exposed metal bearing a pleasing smooth gray patina. The frame retains 95% bright original blue finish, the hammer retains 98% original color case-hardening and the trigger retains 98% original fire blue. The pistol comes with the correct unmarked magazine found in this serial range; it retains 98% non-original blue finish. The checkered hard rubber panel grips rate excellent with one small, hardly noticeable chip from the top of the left panel. A fine Colt pistol. (16849-7) {C&R}

Colt Model 1902 Sporting Model Pistol

Lot # 87 (Sale Order: 87 of 711)

serial #7886, 38 Rimless Smokeless, 6" barrel with a near excellent bore that shows some frosting in the grooves but is otherwise bright. This pistol shows the proper 16 plunge milled forward slide serrations for this serial range however the serial number is stamped in unusually large numbers which appear on both sides of the frame. The gun is in its original finish with raised metal around the Rampant Colt on slide. The "normal" serial numbers are so deeply struck and could not be removed without a major amount of metal being removed from the gun, clearly not the case here. The right side of the triggerguard bow is stamped with the assembler's initial "K" (not one of the initials listed in Sheldon's book). The pistol retains about 95% original blue finish overall, the correct rounded hammer retains 95% original color case-hardened finish and the trigger retains 95% blue, but not the bright fire blue we normally associate with these triggers. The bottom of the triggerguard bow as well as the front grip strap show some lightly scratched initials which penetrate the finish and are bright but very fine. The magazine is unmarked and the checkered hard rubber grips rate about excellent. This is an interesting Colt pistol worthy of further study and research.
