U.S. Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 155 (Sale Order: 155 of 711)

serial #82080, 45 Colt, 7 1/2" barrel with a bright about excellent bore which shows only one small spot of pitting. The barrel is primarily a brown and streaked pewter patina with some generous traces of colors, especially on the front sight and the areas adjacent to it. The ejector rod housing toned to pewter and brown along its outer edge, the bull's-eye ejector rod head is very slightly bent, the bottom of the barrel showing very good "DFC" inspectors marking. The cylinder is a similar smooth plum and dull gunmetal gray with some traces of blue within the flutes, also with scattered oxidation staining and the oddly scattered minor pit here and there. The frame is a mottled smoky case-hardened patina with some minor oxidation staining and some generous traces of colors in the protected areas, the "U.S." marking on its left side still excellent. Both the backstrap and grip frame are primarily toned to a plum and pewter also with generous traces of original blue atop the backstrap and at the root of the guard. The trigger is primarily a plum brown at this point but the hammer shows some vibrant case colors in the protected area normally hidden by the frame. The one-piece walnut grip rates very good plus to very near excellent and is unmolested showing honest wear along the edges of the butt and with slightly faint but still very legible left and right side cartouches, the right side David Clark's, the left side John E. Greer with an 1882 date. The grip is numbered to the frame on the interior in antique ink pen and the bottom of butt has a "DFC" inspectors mark. All of the numbers are matching including the cylinder which is also "DFC" marked. The gun times well and locks up properly. Really a very nice example manufactured in 1882. Colt Bisley Flattop Revolver

Lot # 156 (Sale Order: 156 of 711)

serial #243119, 455 Eley, 7 1/2" barrel with a bright excellent bore. This rare Colt revolver remains in very fine condition. The metal surfaces retain about 90 Ð 95% original blue finish with most loss being on outer edge of ejector rod housing and due to some light flaking on the cylinder. The hammer retains strong original color case-hardened finish while the trigger retains strong original fire blue finish. The checkered hard rubber grips rate excellent with no chips present. The revolver cycles and locks up tight and crisp. These revolvers are quite scarce, the 455 Eley is the most common caliber in the flattop Bisley and there were only 196 of them made in this caliber. A rare and desirable Colt Single Action Army revolver. (16520-2038) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Colt New Service Target Model Revolver

Lot # 157 (Sale Order: 157 of 711)

serial #53361, 44 Russian, 7 1/2" barrel with a bright excellent bore. Revolver features a tall bead front sight and adjustable "U" notch rear with checkered gripstraps and trigger. The condition of the revolver is wonderful with metal surfaces retaining about 97% original blue with most loss at sides of muzzle. The hammer spine and trigger retain 95% plus original fire blue and sides of hammer show bright original polish. The Rampant Colt and "C" on left side of frame are light but this finish is absolutely original and we feel that this was a poorly applied roll mark from the factory. The revolver wears its original fancy early style diamond checkered walnut grips without medallions which rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with sharp crisp checkering. The revolver comes in a nice modern custom wooden presentation case with a cleaning rod, keys and an empty box of ammunition. A brass plaque in the top of the lid is engraved "John C. Wills / of / Anchorage". This is a very fine 1911 production New Service Target. (16651-56) {C&R} [John and Jan Wills Collection]

serial #307058, 45 Colt, 7 1/2" barrel with a bright minty bore. This fine flattop target revolver features "U" notch rear and blued bead front sights along with checkered gripstraps and trigger. The revolver remains in very fine condition retaining 98% strong original blue finish with just a tiny bit of muzzle wear and small area is worn through the blue right at the verified proof on left side of triggerguard, likely from a holster with a metal clip. The hammer spine retains strong original fire blue with sides showing just a little light oxidation staining. The fancy diamond checkered walnut grips are pencil-numbered to the gun and rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with sharp checkering. Revolver comes with a factory letter confirming the configuration and showing it as part of a 10 gun shipment on October 28, 1920 to Winchester Repeating Arms Company. A very fine revolver with an interesting shipping destination. (16651-81) {C&R} [John and Jan Wills Collection]

Sharps Borchardt Model 1878 Long Range Rifle

Lot # 159 (Sale Order: 159 of 711)

serial #17213, 45 2 4/10, 34" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This rifle features all matching numbers on barrel, forend, action, sight staff and buttstock; the barrel has a second number in the 20,000 range which is very neatly over struck with a single hash mark on each digit and with the correct number "17213" neatly struck adjacent to it. The font on the barrel number and the wedge match perfectly and we feel that this barrel was originally fitted to this rifle when it left Bridgeport. The rifle features magnificent French walnut stocks with tang and heel position sight bases. The condition of the rifle is fabulous with the barrel retaining 97% strong original blue finish. The action retains about 80% faded original color case-hardened finish which is blending with a smooth gray patina in areas on the right side. The action is equipped with gutta percha panels and the stock is the later style with capped pistol grip. The horn tiped forend is key fastened and both buttstock and forend rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with strong sharp checkering. The original checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate is present and rates excellent with no chips. The rifle is sighted with a windgauge front sight with spirit level, there is no provision for a rear barrel sight and the long range tang mounted peepsight is present. A conversation with Richard Labowski revealed that this serial number is blank in the records which is common on these later rifles above serial number 17,000. The rifle comes with an original case for the sights which includes two extra front sight inserts and is in near very good condition with perhaps 85% of the leather covering intact along with a modern bullet mould. A fine, rare and investment quality Sharps Borchardt long range rifle. (16651-7) {ANTIQUE} [John and Jan Wills Collection]

Colt New Service Target Revolver

The revolver is sighted with a "U" notch rear and bead front sights. The condition is very nice with metal surfaces retaining about 97% original blue with loss due to light wear near the muzzle and some scattered light scratches. Fire blue on trigger and hammer spine remains quite strong and polished sides of hammer remain bright. The fancy diamond checkered grips have recessed Rampant Colt medallions and rate excellent with 97% original finish remaining and with sharp checkering. Winchester Model 1885 Special Single Shot Rifle

Lot # 161 (Sale Order: 161 of 711)

32-40, 30" part round part octagon No. 3 weight barrel with a bright excellent bore. This rifle is equipped with a replacement factory single set adjustable trigger mounted in a factory un-numbered tang. Since the tang is a replacement there are no assembly numbers to confirm the configuration of the rifle. All components are indeed factory Winchester parts but there is no way to tell if the rifle is in its original configuration. The barrel retains 95% original blue finish with a replacement mainspring base mounted in factory dovetail beneath forendwith a large threaded hole for a palm rest however there is no corresponding hole in the forend. The action retains 85% original color case-hardened finish which has faded some but still shows some strong iridescent blues toward the rear half of action. The checkered pistol grip buttstock and forend are of highly figured walnut (at least 3x) and rate excellent with perhaps a little added light finish on the buttstock. The buttstock features a cheekpiece and is fitted with a Swiss buttplate. The forend and pistolgrip are both the early deluxe rounded types with ebony inserts in each. There is a small gap between the top tang and the stock inlet and when the stock is removed a repair is evident to a split in the stock that looks like it was caught early and seems sound. The rifle is sighted with a globe front, two leaf folding rear and a mid-range Vernier folding tang mounted peepsight. This is a very handsome rifle that has a lovely bore and is chambered for one of most popular target cartridges of its day. This one is begging to go to the range. Winchester Model 1885 Deluxe High Wall Sporting Rifle

Lot # 162 (Sale Order: 162 of 711)

serial #65885, 38-55, 30" part round part octagon No. 3 weight barrel with a lightly pitted bore that shows softened but fully visible rifling. This rifle features deluxe checkered walnut stocks, shotgun buttplate, part octagon barrel, single set trigger and standard sporting sights. The barrel retains about 75% evenly thinning original blue finish with perhaps some added cold blue present. The action retains a good deal of faded original color case-hardened finish which is silvery in color and blending with a gray patina particularly on the left side of the action. The checkered pistol grip buttstock and forend are of very nicely figured American black walnut and rate excellent with about 85% original finish remaining. The lower left tang shows an assembly number "1392 XX SBC" and the top inlet of the stock is marked "3471". While the assembly numbers do not match it would seem that the "XX" is the correct grade on the wood and "SB" likely stands for shotgun butt. The steel shotgun buttplate has grooves hand filed horizontally. The rifle is sighted with a standard blade front and buckhorn rear barrel sights. This is a very attractive rifle. Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Special Single Shot Rifle

Lot # 163 (Sale Order: 163 of 711)

38-55, 30" part round part octagon barrel with matted top flat and a bright excellent bore showing just the slightest frosting just ahead of chamber. This rifle is equipped with a factory single set trigger which was added later as there is no serial number on the tang. The assembly numbers however were restamped on the left side of the lower tang and they read "859 XXXX SPL". The top inlet of the buttstock is also numbered "2859" and the inside of the buttplate "859". The top flat of the barrel is factory matted with the barrel address being within the matting and the caliber marking offset on the left angled flat. Neither the barrel or the action are proofed indicating that this rifle was built prior to 1905. The condition of the rifle is nice with the barrel retaining about 85% evenly thinning original blue finish with some scattered very fine pits present in some areas. The action retains about 95% strong original color case-hardened finish which shows a little scattered light oxidation staining. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock features a factory cheekpiece and Swiss buttplate and is of highly figured American black walnut and rates excellent with lots of original oil finish and perhaps a little added light oil. The forend is equipped with a folding palmrest which is clearly not a factory piece but the checkering is cut around the base. The forend is clearly Winchester, the checkering shows considerable wear and is in the factory style but again, it is cut around this non-factory palm rest. The rifle is sighted with a windgauge front, no provision for rear and a mid-range Vernier tang mounted peepsight. A fine High Wall deluxe single shot rifle. This rifle features special order un-checkered fancy walnut stocks, a Swiss buttplate and a single set trigger. The barrel retains 95% original blue finish with some scattered specks of light surface oxidation present. The action retains about 80% faded original color case-hardened finish with some light oxidation staining present. The set trigger does not always function properly. The stocks are uncheckered and of fancy American black walnut. The stocks rate very good with about 85% original finish remaining with most loss on belly of forend where the wood has turned dark. Very Rare 1903 Springfield Takedown Magazine Sporting Rifle By Fred Adolph

Lot # 165 (Sale Order: 165 of 711)

30-06, 25" part octagon part round barrel Krupp steel barrel with full-length integral rib and a bright about excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this fine rifle are now all in-the-white remaining mostly smooth with the barrel showing a very slight scattered spot of tiny pinprick pitting here or there. The rib of the barrel is neatly hand matted and there is light engraving at the junction of barrel and action. The receiver shows some nice quality loose flowing foliate scroll with its front ring very finely, very neatly matted. The bottom metal shows an exceptionally nice depiction of the Diana the Huntress in a woodland scene flanked by two bear cubs, a raven above surveying the scene. The bow of the guard and the front extension show the same loose foliate scroll as the receiver. The rifle is stocked in a nice grade of their English walnut, classic style with a rounded dual beaded left-side cheekpiece. The stock itself rates very good plus to excellent showing only some minor dings and handling marks from the years, there is a light drying crack in the highly figured wood at the left side of the butt at the toe. There are very neatly checkered panels at the pistolgrip, mid-stock and forend, these accented by lovely quarter and half panel floral carvings with light fleur-de-lis accents. The buttstock features a nice bone pistolgrip cap with a swivel stud along the toeline, there is another present on the schnabel forend, and there is a nice grooved steel trap door buttplate with engraved heel and toe giving a length of pull of 13 1/2". The arm takes down by manipulating the lever at the rearmost portion of the forearm which allows the barrel to be unscrewed forward from the receiver. Mr. Petrov, in his book Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century, mentions that this rifle was built specifically for Burns Lyman Smith, the son of Lyman Cornelius Smith whose shotgun bears his initials and name. The rifle is discussed further in volume 2 of Mr. Petrov's work, with numerous images of the rifle. The bolt handle, underside of receiver and barrel all exhibit German proofs, proof-dated February 1924. Mr. Petrov attributes the wonderful engraving on the floorplate to Fritz Heimbeck of Suhl. Rifle is sighted with a simple bead front with 3 folding leaf express rear, it would appear as though a later addition is a striker-mounted windage and elevation adjustable Lyman aperture sight. The left side of the action is neatly marked "Fred Adolph Genoa NY" and the rifle is featured on the cover of Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century, volume 2 with the floorplate prominently featured in the introductory pages of the work. Adolph's work is lovely and was second to none, he had grandiose ideas for his arms making enterprise which likely would have succeeded famously were it not for the advent of the First World War which essentially cut off his supply of materials from Germany and his access to engravers there; his work is much prized when found today. This is an absolutely stunning example, made for the son of an enterprising industrialist, who would become quite a success in his own right at the helm of his father's companies in later years. Exceptional Kornbrath Engraved 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By Seymour Griffin

Lot # 166 (Sale Order: 166 of 711)

serial #619107, 30-06, 21 3/4" barrel with a bright excellent bore showing only the lightest amount of frosting nearer the muzzle. The metal surfaces of the barreled action retain about 95-97% original rust blue showing light fading and a scattered minor handling mark here or there with a tiny amount of extremely light pinprick pitting nearer the muzzle. The bottom metal shows slightly more toning to a dark gray blue drifting slightly to brown on the bow of the guard. The bolt body, shroud and striker retain most of their original rust blue with some slight toning on the knob and operational marks on the body; the bolt proper is dual heat treated with slightly swept handle and a small gas relief port. Custom-made by Seymour Griffin himself, this rifle is featured prominently on the cover of Mr. Petrov's work Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century. The floorplate and bottom metal show Mr. Kornbrath's lovely loose foliate scroll with a lovely game scene vignette prominent at the center showing a bull moose amidst a woodland scene; the bow of the guard features intertwined monogrammed initials "CW". The rifle is masterfully stocked classic style three-quarters to the muzzle in a very nice piece of American black walnut. The pistolgrip and forend are nicely checkered with mullered borders and there is a sling swivel along the toeline however no front swivel provision at all. The stock itself rates very good plus with nearly all its original varnish and overall very minor dings and handling marks from the years of use afield. There is a very tiny crack at the rear of the receiver tang, it is tight and barely noticeable. The stock features sharp comb flutes, a schnabel tip, a bone pistolgrip cap and a checkered steel buttplate with trapdoor, also neatly, very lightly engraved by Mr. Kornbrath, showing a 13 1/8" length of pull. The rifle is sighted with a banded sporting front ramp with brass bead and a Lyman receiver sight; the face of the ramp very finely matted. Mr. Kornbrath has added some very light accenting engraving along the sides of the ramp with a nice flourish at its rear. Really a lovely early Griffin very nicely showcasing this man's early work, it may be interesting to note that the underside of the bolt handle, side of the striker, underside of barrel, side of the triggerguard (beneath the wood line), underside of follower and underside of the floorplate are all marked "07", likely by Mr. Griffin, in an effort to identify all the parts of this rifle while the arm was in a state of disassembly while being built and engraved etc. (36650-68) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

serial #24291, 30 WCF, 26" octagon barrel with full length magazine and a bright fine bore. This is a nice second year of manufacture rifle.
