Marlin Ballard No. 6 1/2 Rigby Off-Hand Rifle

Lot # 130 (Sale Order: 130 of 711)

serial #28164, 38-55, 28" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This fine rifle features a faceted action with engraved Rigby flats at breech of barrel with top flat being engraved with "BALLARD" in riband. The rifle is equipped with its original single trigger and features all matching numbers on frame, barrel, forend, buttstock, buttplate and stock tang. The frame of this fourth model Rigby Ballard features lovely relief floral scroll engraving with a running deer in round panel on left and a standing bear in round panel on right. The three top flats of the frame show nice scroll as does the top of frame ahead of tang sight and there is a nice ring engraved around the muzzle. The condition of this rifle is very fine with the barrel retaining about 98% strong original blue finish. The action retains about 80% original color case-hardened finish which has softened over time but has a lovely appearance with even subtle color throughout. The French walnut buttstock and forend rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with just normal light handling marks. The checkering remains strong showing just the slightest wear, the forend shows its nice original horn tip and the cheekpiece shows a nice clean edge. The original Farrow pattern light Swiss buttplate is in place and retains traces of original nickel plated finish and is mostly an even gray patina. The correct Vernier mid-range tang mounted peepsight is present along with a windgauge spirit level front; there is no provision for a rear barrel sight. This is a very nice and very honest 6 1/2 Rigby Ballard rifle. Investment quality. (16651-19) {ANTIQUE} [John and Jan Wills Collection]

Marlin Ballard No. 6 Schuetzen Rifle

Lot # 131 (Sale Order: 131 of 711)

serial #3107, 40-65, 32" part round part octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is an early No. 6 rifle featuring a plain action. The rifle is equipped with factory adjustable double set triggers, a ball and spur lever and heavy nickel plated brass Swiss buttplate. The rifle has matching numbers on the action, barrel, forend and stock tang with the buttstock and buttplate both being numbered "20624". The stock is an original Ballard No. 6 stock, it fits very nicely and would pass as original if not for the number. The barrel retains an even, smooth gray brown patina and has a pleasing appearance. The action retains about 85% original color case-hardened finish which has softened somewhat but still shows nice contrast. The checkered walnut buttstock and forend rate about excellent with the forend showing 95% original finish with sharp checkering and the buttstock showing what may be a nicely done older restored finish also with strong checkering. The heavy brass Swiss buttplate retains only traces of its original nickel plated finish with the balance bearing a pleasing patina. The rifle is sighted with a windguage front and a mid-range Vernier tang mounted peepsight with no rear barrel seat. This is a very handsome rifle that would probably perform very well at the range. Marlin Ballard No. 3 Deluxe Gallery Rifle

serial #11980, 22 RF, 28" part round part octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel is marked with the correct serial number on underside and also shows a "JW" in an oval. The rifle features a standard single trigger and full loop lever. The barrel retains 99% original blue finish while the action is mostly gray with some light wear to the engraving. The buttstock and forend are both of beautifully figured English walnut and rate excellent plus with 95% original finish remaining and with sharp checkering. serial #8098 (all matching except wedge which is numbered "8094"), .44 caliber, 7 1/2" part round part octagon barrel with a very good bore showing deep rifling with light frosting throughout. This is a very early second model revolver, out of the "typical" New Hampshire range and it is equipped with the early "V" mainspring carried over from the Walker. Metal surfaces of revolver retain a light gray brown patina overall with edges remaining well defined and with all markings remaining clear and legible. Colt Third Model Dragoon Revolver

Lot # 139 (Sale Order: 139 of 711)

serial #13970, .44 caliber, 7 1/2" part round part octagon barrel with a very good plus bore. This revolver has all matching numbers except for an old un-numbered replacement wedge and there is no visible number on the arbor. Iron surfaces of revolver retain a deep brown patina with scattered light pitting present in some areas; the barrel address and frame numbers are clearly visible. The frame shows what appears to be some old vise bite marks but there is patina over these. The cylinder scene is no longer visible but the serial number on the periphery of the cylinder is still visible. The brass grip frame appears to have been lightly cleaned and is in the process of re-acquiring a patina. The one-piece walnut grip rates about very good and may be an old replacement as the grip seems a bit too wide where it meets the frame but it definitely have a lot of age on it. While this is a sort of salty old Dragoon, it has a nice look and functions properly. (16889-5) {ANTIQUE}

The two-piece walnut grips are both numbered "597" in large numerals on exterior bottom of each panel and rate near very good with perhaps 35% original finish remaining, they fit beautifully and have never been sanded. The removable spring loaded disc primer device remains present ahead of trigger. A very solid example of these rare revolvers with a total estimated production run of 640 pieces. (16889-2) {ANTIQUE}

Colt Third Model Dragoon Revolver

Lot # 149 (Sale Order: 149 of 711)

serial #10737 all matching including wedge, .44 caliber, 7 1/2" barrel with a very good bore. The barrel shows a light cleaning and is a dull gray patina with barrel address being completely removed but barrel serial number is still visible. The cylinder shows about 60% of its cylinder scene and has scattered blunt impact marks and bears a pleasing gray brown patina. The frame bears a pleasing matching gray patina and bears proper "COLT'S / PATENT / U.S." marking. The brass gripframe bears a beautiful mellow patina with numerous impact marks on butt from the gun being used as some type of hammer. The one-piece walnut grip rates about very good with chips from toe and heel on each side. The grips show a good deal of oil finish and light cartouches remain visible and very near legible on each side. The wedge screw is missing and all of the patina including the loading lever matches and is very honest, it is only the barrel that has been cleaned and aged. A decent third model Dragoon. Fine Contemporary Colt Model 1874 Gatling Gun

Lot # 150 (Sale Order: 150 of 711)

serial #229, 45-70 Govt, 29 1/2" musket length barrels with bright very good plus to near excellent bores with a few showing some scattered light oxidation or widely scattered pinprick pit or two. The 10 barrels were finished nicely browned, now showing some light surface oxidation which is still pleasing. The barrel frame is painted with a black enamel, showing a few minor chips or flakes here and there, the right trunnion is serial numbered 229 and all the attendant parts are matching. The breech casing and feed cover, indeed all the brass surfaces, are a dull tarnished goldenrod patina, the bolts all remain bright. The gun sits atop a modern yoke and tripod with a rear steel tiller assembly with brass handle. The yoke will swivel through 360¡ of traverse and the tiller will allow roughly 58¡ travel of elevation from 16¡ depressed to 42¡ elevated. The tiller and crank handle are also finished nicely browned, the tripod is painted olive drab and rates about excellent with authentic spiked brass feet. There are three thick circular Plexiglas floor protectors included to keep your fine floors from spike damage. The overall length barrel nut to cascabel is about 47", standing about 48" from the floor (elevated on the protectors) to the top of the feed trough. The guns seems to operate well and it is purported to run perfectly. Included with the gun are two contemporary 40-round vertical gravity feed box magazines. The right side of the barrel frame holds a fold-up blade front sight and the v-style rear sight is faithful to the original design, but adjustable for windage as well as elevation. The bolt access plug was designed without a front hook to catch the bolts rear for withdrawal so they must be manually manipulated from the front. There is an exact reproduction of the original Colt nameplate with patent dates affixed to the breech casing. The gun features the improved oscillator found on the Colt 1874 guns, but there is no provision on the tiller for engagement of the worm. Overall a very nicely made gun, quality-constructed throughout, that would literally be an absolute blast at the range and would certainly be the focal point of any gun room or retail display. (Transfers as a modern long-arm) (36520-3097)[ Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]
