U.S. Model 1911 Transitional Model Pistol By Colt

Lot # 76 (Sale Order: 76 of 783)

serial #707664, 45 ACP, 5" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of the slide retain about 97% original blue, the loss is due to some high edge and contact point wear. The frame retains a bit more of a professionally restored blue; really museum grade and it must be closely scrutinized to realize it is not factory original. There is some light drifting on the frontstrap and leading edge of the triggerguard but no takedown-reassembly scratch. All of the markings are sharp and crisp including WT Gordon's acceptance stamp; the barrel is "H P" marked atop its hood with the two characters separate. The checkered walnut grips rate excellent with crisp diamonds, only a couple showing very light flattening or tiny chips to the points. Included is a very nice 2-tone magazine which rates about excellent. Really a very lovely example overall, shipped in July 1924 with 2850 other guns to Springfield Armory. Extremely Fine Early U.S. M1 Garand National Match Rifle By Springfield Armory

Lot # 77 (Sale Order: 77 of 783)

serial #5796896, 30-06, 24" National Match, January 1955-dated barrel, properly proofed and "T" stamped denoting "targeted", with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces rate excellent retaining about 99% original slightly gray-green parkerized finish. The smooth walnut stock rates excellent with crisp firing proof and DOD acceptance stamp, the barrel channel is appropriately pencil-numbered to the action "6896". The handguards rate excellent as well and all are a rich tobacco-russet color. The barrel is marked on its left edge to the rear of the sight boss "NM", it is appropriately DOD acceptance marked and is Springfield Armory "D65355448" numbered. The receiver is appropriately marked, correctly part numbered and is heat lot "Z 5 B". All of the parts appear to be appropriate and correctly drawing numbered. Included with the rifle is an original U.S. Army shipping document dated November 1955 listing the firearm by serial number as: "Rifle Cal. 30, M1, National Match" showing shipment to a gentleman in West Allis Wisconsin. The type I National Match M1 Garand rifle is seldom encountered in an unaltered state of condition these days. In addition to being un-altered, this specimen is in exquisite original condition and appears absolutely unfired since leaving Raritan Arsenal in 1955, the M1 Garand throat gauge inserts into the chamber basically to the very first index line above the numeral 1. Included with the rifle is a web canvas Garand sling, MRT marked, the numerals below that marking are not decipherable and a plastic oiler/thong and grease reservoir in the butt. An absolutely stunning example of an all-correct type I National Match rifle. (37507-2) {C&R}...more

Excellent Early U.S. M1 Garand National Match Rifle By Springfield Armory

Lot # 78 (Sale Order: 78 of 783)

serial #5825887, 30-06, 24" National Match, April 1954-dated barrel, properly proofed, "NM" and "T" stamped denoting "targeted", with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces rate excellent and retain about 99% excellent quality gray-green parkerized and blued finishes. The smooth walnut stock rates excellent and features a crisp firing proof and DOD acceptance stamp, showing perhaps a bit of added finish bringing the military oil up to a very slight semi gloss sheen. The handguards rate excellent as well and all are a tobacco brown. United States arsenal-upgraded to type II specifications, the stock shows yellowish bedding compound and is numbered to the gun in white paint in the barrel channel "5887", this number repeated on the bottom inside of the trigger housing. The barrel is marked on its left edge to the rear of the sight boss "NM, electrically rather than stamped, and as-mentioned is also "NM" stamped at the breech along with a star and is Springfield Armory part numbered "F56535448". The receiver is correctly marked, correctly part numbered and is heat lot "Z 5 B". All of the parts appear to be appropriate and correctly drawing numbered, both the rear and front sights are "NM" marked as is the operating rod and the gas port cylinder. Included with the rifle is a November 1965-dated DOD form 1348-1A from Letterkenny Army Depot listing: "Rifle, U.S., Cal. 30 M1 N/M W/Sling Only", with the serial number written in ballpoint pen. The rifle is in immaculate condition and an M1 Garand throat gauge inserts just to the index line numbered 1; a green web canvas M1 Garand sling is included, it is unmarked. Really an extremely attractive, early rifle, arsenal upgraded to type II specifications, that appears unfired since leaving Letterkenny, that doubtless will shoot as good as it looks. U.S. M1D Sniper Rifle By Winchester (Cmp Built)

Lot # 79 (Sale Order: 79 of 783)

serial #2432506, 30-06, 24" October 1958 Springfield Armory barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 98% arsenal-grade parkerized and blued finishes. Other than the arsenal and date marking, the barrel is marked only with two capital letter "T"s , the latter date may actually be 1953 or 1958, the second character is obliterated by a ding and only a portion of its top marking is evident. The smooth slab-sawn walnut buttstock rates excellent as arsenal cleaned, showing a crisp "SA" marking in a partial box at the left side of the butt as well as a Raritan Arsenal "RA" marking to the rear of this; there is a crisp serifed P firing proof on the pistolgrip. Both handguards are walnut and rate very good plus to excellent as well. The rifle is fitted with an M84 telescopic sight serial #9098. The scope rates excellent with 98-99% blue and with a post and crosshair reticle showing bright excellent optics. The rifle is a mix of parts, primarily Springfield Armory, and comes with the box and papers from the CMP with a 1999 dated receipt from CMP-South for "Rifle Cal. 30 M1D" listing this gun by serial number. Included is a complement of accessories including cleaning equipment, leather cheekpiece with laces, flashider, case for the telescope and a canvas web sling. Overall a wonderful CMP-assembled M1D that likely shoots as good as it looks. (37526-29) {C&R}...more

Extremely Rare Documented First World War 1903 Springfield Marine Corps Sniper

Lot # 80 (Sale Order: 80 of 783)

serial #454040, 30-06, 24" 12-13 dated Springfield Armory barrel with an otherwise bright excellent bore which shows one spot of moderate pitting halfway down its length on the right side, flanked by a couple other smaller spots of light pitting. The barreled action retains about 95% gray green parkerized and case-hardened finishes on barrel and receiver. The bolt body retains trace original blue with operational marks, the handle now a dark gray-brown with minor dings and handling marks. The bolt shroud shows very good oil quenched color case-hardening with the safety a mottled silvery case-hardened patina. The bottom metal has toned to a soft brown patina with toning to pewter on the bow of the guard. The stock is a Marine Corps field replacement with straight grip and dual crossbolts, the handguard original and properly relieved for the front scope base. The barrel is neatly stamped "U.S.M.C." beneath the date code, the stock as well is stamped "U.S.M.C. 454040" to the rear of the triggerguard tang. The original sights are intact and the rifle is mounted with steel target blocks which support a Winchester B5 telescopic sight with adjustable objective. The scope itself rates very good plus with much original blue and features a crosshair reticle and bright excellent optics. This rifle is pictured in and identified by serial number in the work: U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper ? Peter Senich 1993 and The Complete Book of Sniping ? 1988 Peter Senich; it is formerly of the Gray collection and of the Bill Douglas collection. Included with the arm is a 2007 dated letter from Mr. Douglas detailing the provenance on the gun and from whom he acquired it. Bona fide Marine Corps sniping rifles are an extreme rarity among 1903 rifles and seldom offered on the secondary market. This is an excellent example of a genuine Marine Corps sniper detailed and published in two works specifically on the subject. A rare opportunity for the advanced U.S. martial collector to obtain a United States Marine Corps-used sniping rifle. (37576-2) {C&R}...more

Johnson Model 1941 Semi-Auto Rifle

Lot # 81 (Sale Order: 81 of 783)

serial #6487, 30-06, 20 3/4" Johnson Automatics barrel with a poor bore which shows heavy pitting its full-length. The barrel retains about 95% original dark gray-green parkerizing with some hardened oil or varnish present. The receiver shows about 95% later blue with an overall smattering of light oxidation on the handguard area and around the factory markings, some of which are somewhat light; the magazine box is similar. The walnut stock and forearm rate about very good plus as neatly refinished, the pistolgrip area has been reshaped and formed into a more prominent "sporter-like" grip and has had a makeshift home-made gripcap installed. There are the expected minor dings and handling marks from the years, no doubt from use as a sporter, and there is a small 1" crack starting at the left of the upper tang. The buttplate at this point is primarily a lightly oxidized patina as is the rear sling swivel and the front cross pin is missing. The gun seems to function well mechanically however the bolt hold open does not function; as is correct with these rifles the barrel is not numbered to the receiver. Overall an about very good example of these sought-after Second World War rifles which appears to have been lightly "sporterized", with the stock modification and shortening of the barrel (barrels are fairly easily had, we see them occasionally in the silent auction here). U.S. Model 1841 Percussion Rifle By Robbins Kendall & Lawrence

Lot # 82 (Sale Order: 82 of 783)

.54 cal., 33" barrel with an oxidized bore. The barrel is a mix of pewter and speckled brown patina with some moderate oxidation and pitting in the area of the front band. The tang is 1847-dated and the U.S., inspectors and firing proofs are evident but slightly obscured to the left of the breech cone. The standard half-moon brass blade front sight is intact as is the flat-top v-notch rear. The lockplate is a mottled silver-gray-brown case-hardened patina and is appropriately maker marked and also 1847-dated. All of the brass furniture has tarnished to a dull goldenrod patina. The spare nipple and a patch worm are in place inside the patchbox. The stock rates about very good were it not for a drying crack running from the breech all the way to the center of the butt, it shows minor dings and handling marks and much original varnish with similar drying cracks along its right side. The left stock flat shows two light but still very good cartouches. The rear sling swivel is present, the front swivel has broken off and there is a brass-tipped ramrod in place. This example has two vertical cuts in the barrel ahead of the band for affixing a saber bayonet lug, it is no longer present. The lock is crisp and mechanically functional. Overall a rather good "example" piece from this Vermont maker. (36520-3749) {ANTIQUE} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]...more

U.S. Model 1863 Zouave Percussion Contract Rifle By Remington

Lot # 83 (Sale Order: 83 of 783)

.58 cal., 33" 7-groove barrel with a bright very good plus to near excellent bore which shows only the tiniest amount of light pitting. The barrel on this fine rifle retains about 98% original blue with some very light fading at the muzzle, a few very small flecks of oxidation and the tang toning somewhat to brown. The appropriate sights and bayonet lug are intact and the top is marked at breech "1863" with appropriate VP and eaglehead firing proofs with "Steel" and "HSL" inspectors marking on the left flat. The lockplate and hammer retain all their original vivid color case-hardening and are appropriately marked and dated 1863, showing a few very superficial handling marks. The brass furniture has all toned to a dull ocher patina and the spare nipple is in place beneath the patchbox. The lockplate screws, band springs and trigger all show some very nice pale fire temper blue. The stock assembly rates excellent with only a few very light minor dings and handling marks from the years and two very crisp left-side cartouches. The sling swivels are present, the lock is crisp and mechanically functional and what is likely the original tulip-shaped ramrod is in place. Really a very stellar example overall from-which it would be difficult to upgrade. (37546-13) {ANTIQUE} [Bleecker Williams Collection]...more

Rare Merrimack Arms & Manufacturing Company Ballard Military Trials Rifle

Lot # 84 (Sale Order: 84 of 783)

serial #20224, .50 cal. dual ignition, 30" round barrel with a bright excellent bore which shows only one small pit near the breech. The barrel retains a nice 90-92% original blue, the loss is due primarily to even light fading, some light muzzle wear, handling marks and a few scattered areas of light oxidation, also with one small spot of pitting between the two rear bands. The frame shows some very good color case-hardening, perhaps 75% remaining which is quite vivid in spots. The lever is now primarily a speckled pewter and oxidized brown patina and there is some minor pitting on the lower right side of frame. The breechblock is dual ignition with patent marking on hammer, it is numbered 20231. The bands are primarily a silver and brown patina, the rearmost with some light pitting. The buttstock rates very good plus with only minor dings and handling marks from the years, the forend is very good showing a bit more wear, more dings and impact marks. Sling swivels are fitted and the manual extractor seems to work properly. The rifle is sighted with a simple blade front and flip-up leaf rear. The right side of the gun is fitted, it would appear by the factory, with two loops which support a ramrod and most assuredly could support a cleaning rod were rimfire ammunition in use. The rear-most loop is threaded as is a corresponding section of the rod which holds it fast when-stored. The mechanism works well and is crisp mechanically and both the tang and buttstock are numbered properly to the frame; additionally there is neatly hand stamped ahead of the serial number and behind the rear sight "No. 50", perhaps some manner of rack marking or perhaps some manner of governmental tally of the submitted arms. Flayderman mentions that .50 caliber rimfire arms were submitted by Merrimack Arms as trials guns and that they are very rare, he further states that probably all of the rifles made by the Merrimack Arms Manufacturing Company had the dual ignition breechblocks. Overall a very fine example of this very rare, and very late Merrimack Ballard military rifle. (36520-1939) {ANTIQUE} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]...more

Rare Sharps Borchardt Officer's Model Rifle

Lot # 85 (Sale Order: 85 of 783)

serial #6621, 45-70, 32" round barrel with a very good bright bore that is dark for the last couple inches. This rare Borchardt is only one of 48 every produced and is only two numbers away from the example illustrated in Seller's book which is number 6623. The officer's model differs from the Military rifle as it has wood panels on the action like the Mid Range rifles. The rifle is equipped with standard military sights and has had a Lyman tang peepsight added having one screw mounted in the tang and one in the top of the wrist. The rifle has matching numbers on the action and underside of barrel and appear to be all original in all respects other than the added tang sight. The barrel is marked with the "Old Reliable" trademark and shows the Bridgeport address. The condition of the gun is very good with most of the finish loss due to oxidation from poor storage over the years. The barrel retains about 90 - 95% original blue with scattered patches of light oxidation overall and with an open added dovetail just behind the military front sight. There are some light tool marks on either side of the barrel at the action. The action retains mostly an even brown patina with some scattered areas of old light oxidation present. It appears that the action of this rifle was originally color case-hardened. The walnut buttstock and full length military style forend show some figure and rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining with just the normal light handing marks present. The walnut panels on action are in similar condition and the original checkered steel shotgun buttplate is present. What appears to be the original steel cleaning rod is present beneath barrel. A nice solid example of these very rare Sharps Borchardt rifles. (17478-3) {ANTIQUE}...more

Rare And Fine Sharps Model 1851 "Boxlock" Sporting Carbine

Lot # 86 (Sale Order: 86 of 783)

serial #1361, 60 bore (about .425 caliber), 21" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This carbine remains in superb condition and is illustrated on page 44 of Sellers' Sharps Firearms. The gun features a special globe target style front sight, original squirrel ear rear and also its original folding tang mounted peepsight. The gun features all correct markings which include "ROBBINS & / LAWRENCE" on top of barrel "C.SHARPS / PATENT / 1848" along with serial number on top tang and "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / 1845" on tape primer door. The barrel retains 80% original brown finish blending with a pleasing brown patina. The frame retains a pleasing mix of a wonderful smooth brown patina with faded traces of mottled original color case-hardened finish showing in some areas. The lock and hammer retain about 75% evenly thinning original blue finish blending with a pleasing smooth brown patina in protected areas. The lever shows a good deal of original color case-hardened finish. The walnut buttstock and forend rate excellent showing a little added light oil finish and show nice raised grain, perfect fit and just an overall lovely appearance. The brass patchbox, buttplate and barrel band all show a lovely mellow patina with all screws remaining properly indexed. In Sellers' book the gun is not credited to any collection so presumably the gun belonged to the author at the time of publication. (It should be noted that Sellers transposed the serial number and it appears as "1316" instead of the correct "1361" - but it is clearly the same gun with its unusual sights) This is an extremely fine example of these handsome and rare Sharps carbines which is even more desirable having special sights and being published in the most respected book on the subject. Investment quality. (17586-32) {ANTIQUE}...more

Sharps Borchardt Long Range Target Rifle

Lot # 87 (Sale Order: 87 of 783)

serial #17222, 45 2.4", 34" round barrel with an excellent bore. This rifle is in the typical long range configuration with a wedge fastened forend, gutta percha action panels, full capped pistolgrip and a checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate. The top of the barrel is properly marked with the "Old Reliable" monogram and the Bridgeport address; the underside of the barrel is not numbered, the forend is, this appears to be an oversight as the barrel is certainly original. The barrel retains about 85% evenly thinning original blue finish overall. The action has a very bright appearance which seems to be color case-hardening which has faded out. The sides of the breechblock show light machine marks and it is also bright which may indicate that this action and breechblock are actually nickel plated. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of English walnut and rate very good plus with a little added light oil finish and with strong checkering. The inlet for the heel position base has been neatly filled with a piece of American black walnut which is sort of blonde and contrasts with the rich, dark English walnut. The forend has the correct horn tip and the horn grip cap and buttplate are all excellent with no chips. The rifle comes with correct windgauge front with spirit level and long range tang sight mounted in integral base. Both sights appear to be nice quality modern replacements with the spirit level missing the fluid and glass. Overall a very respectable example of these rare and extremely handsome Sharps rifles. Marlin Ballard No. 4 1/2 A-1 Mid Range Rifle

Lot # 88 (Sale Order: 88 of 783)

serial #1825, 40-63, 28 1/2" octagon barrel with a near very good bore that shows a little scattered light pitting and light wear. This is an early Ballard Mid Range rifle with engraved action which reads "Mid Range" on right and "Ballard A1" all in large gothic letters and surrounded in light scroll. Dutcher attributes all of the engraving on these early Ballards under serial number 5000 to L.D. Nimschke. The rifle features all matching numbers including on its unusual early checkered steel shotgun buttplate and has a full loop lever with single trigger. The barrel appears to have been shortened by 1 1/2" during the period of use, being set back rather than the muzzle shortened as there is a second hole beneath the forend 1 1/2" back from the one that the forend screw now fits into. The chamber is still a straight case and we assume it is still in 40-63. The barrel retains an even gray patina overall with a single hole in top flat about 5/8" from the breech face. The action is an overall gray patina with engraving and markings remaining clear and legible. The metal is generally free of any pitting but there are some scattered light, minor bruises from the years. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of European walnut showing nice figure and rating very good showing wear and added oil finish. The forend checkering shows considerable carry wear, to almost smooth on the belly; the pistolgrip shows stronger checkering and there is small chip missing from the nose of the comb. The rifle looks to have been used more as a sporting rifle based on the carry wear and with its gold washed Beach combination front sight. The rifle is additionally sighted with an open sporting rear and a short range folding tang mounted peepsight. Overall this is a quite endearing engraved Ballard rifle that looks to have seen years of honest use. (17478-2) {ANTIQUE}...more

22 LR, 30" part round part octagon barrel with an excellent bore. This is a very nice quality custom rifle. The rifle has also been beautifully stocked in dark walnut with a nice shadowline cheekpiece, grooved steel shotgun buttplate and a long beavertail forend. serial #832221, 30-06, 23" barrel with a very good bore which is excellent for its first-half, the second-half showing some frosting and scattered light pitting within the grooves. The metal surfaces retain about 98% plus excellent quality maker blue, the receiver drifting to plum due to the hardness of the steel. The makers name is engraved on the barrel and the action is engraved in full coverage with oakleaf and acorn engraving with background punch-dot accenting. This nice Germanic engraving continues onto the barrel for about 2" and the front and rear extensions and bow of guard feature the same nice oakleaf scroll. The floorplate shows oakleaf and acorn accenting, bordering a game scene vignette of a leaping Whitetail deer amidst a forested backdrop. The deer is inlaid in silver and both the vignette and the oakleaf panels are bordered in fine silver wire. Lovely Winchester 1897 "Double W" Cartridge Board

Lot # 99 (Sale Order: 99 of 783)

40" x 57 1/2" overall in its original frame with moulded gold inner border. The board is complete with all original cartridges intact including the "cut-away" window display shotshells in lower left corner. All cartridges show a wonderful patina and have never been cleaned or removed from the board. The board itself shows a very rich green field with vivid scenes of the bear hunters at center and the moose on right and mallard on left. The red in the Winchester names has faded somewhat to a more brick color and there are some scattered light white specks on the board but they are unobtrusive. There is some minor bubbling to the paper surface along some of the edges, this again is relatively minor in nature and doesn't detract from the beauty or integrity of the board. The backing is fully intact, numbered "1291" and retains its original label "PRESENTED WITH COMPLIMENTS / OF THE / Winchester Repeating Arms Co. / PLEASE HANG IN A PROMINENT PLACE". This is an extremely honest, untouched and fine example of these popular Winchester cartridge boards. An investment quality piece of American gun advertising. (17603-2)...more
