Winchester Model 1886 Lightweight Takedown Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 153 (Sale Order: 153 of 1138)

serial #155946, 33 WCF, 24" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel and magazine tube retain about 95-97% original blue, the loss due to some light wear, a few minor rub marks or light scratches and some scattered light oxidation, primarily on the underside of the barrel in the area near the muzzle. The nosecap retains a similar amount of original blue with some light flaking to brown, the takedown boss retains nearly all its original blue. The receiver retains perhaps 92-95% original blue, the loss due to flaking to brown, more prominent on the carry area of the belly and left side of the receiver. The lever retains some very good color case-hardening which is muting somewhat, perhaps 92% remaining, with some minor oxidation spots. The smooth shotgun butt stock rates very good plus with some minor flaking and light dings and handling marks from use afield with a very tiny chip at the toe of the buttplate. The forend shows a bit more wear and a bit more flaking varnish but still rates very good overall. The rifle is sighted with a Lyman No. 4 hunting front sight and standard Winchester sporting rear sight. Really a very nice 1886 lightweight takedown in a fine state of condition. Scarce Marlin Model 1893 Musket Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 154 (Sale Order: 154 of 1138)

serial #B4969, 30 WCF, 24" round barrel with a very good plus bore that has some slight frosting near muzzle. Receiver and lever have turned a dull gray gunmetal patina with some light oxidation staining. Barrel has turned a pleasing plum patina. The stock rates very good plus with a few handling marks, and a 1 1/2" hairline split near front band on right. Tang is slightly proud of buttstock and wood may have been lightly cleaned but is proud of metal in other areas. Rifle is equipped with a Lyman front sight which may be a replacement and bayonet lug has unfortunately been ground. These Marlin Muskets were made for military and law enforcement organizations and were made in very limited numbers. Given the correct dimensions, any machinist worth his salt could fabricate a new lug in short order. This lot provides a rare opportunity for the Marlin collector to acquire a very hard-to-find Musket. (206520-2236) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection](2000/4000)...more

Winchester Model 71 Deluxe Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 155 (Sale Order: 155 of 1138)

serial #26069, 348 Win, 24" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 98% original blue, the loss being only very light high edge wear and a few minor scratches or handling marks sparsely scattered about here and there. The checkered capped pistolgrip buttstock and forend rate excellent showing an exceptional quality refinish, the checkering remaining crisp. There is some very minor scratching on the right side of the nosecap and there are tiny length-wise scratches along the barrel right at the wood line of the forend. Both of the nosecap screws are slightly cockeyed and there is scratching around the periphery of one. The rifle is sighted with an ivory bead front sight, the original hood is intact, the rear sight slot is blanked and the bolt is cut for a riding bolt peep, which is no longer present; the left side of the receiver wears a Lyman No. 38 "Climbin Lyman" receiver sight. Really an exceptionally nice short tang deluxe Model 71 overall, the stock refinish actually misses detection at first glance. (37553-145) {C&R}(2000/3000)...more

Marlin Ballard No. 4 1/2 A-1 Mid Range Rifle

Lot # 157 (Sale Order: 157 of 1138)

serial #1825, 40-63, 28 1/2" octagon barrel with a near very good bore that shows a little scattered light pitting and light wear. This is an early Ballard Mid Range rifle with engraved action which reads "Mid Range" on right and "Ballard A1" all in large gothic letters and surrounded in light scroll. Dutcher attributes all of the engraving on these early Ballards under serial number 5000 to L.D. Nimschke. The rifle features all matching numbers including on its unusual early checkered steel shotgun buttplate and has a full loop lever with single trigger. The barrel appears to have been shortened by 1 1/2" during the period of use, being set back rather than the muzzle shortened as there is a second hole beneath the forend 1 1/2" back from the one that the forend screw now fits into. The chamber is still a straight case and we assume it is still in 40-63. The barrel retains an even gray patina overall with a single hole in top flat about 5/8" from the breech face. The action is an overall gray patina with engraving and markings remaining clear and legible. The metal is generally free of any pitting but there are some scattered light, minor bruises from the years. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of European walnut showing nice figure and rating very good showing wear and added oil finish, the right side of the stock showing an old repair at the buttplate. The forend checkering shows considerable carry wear, to almost smooth on the belly; the pistolgrip shows stronger checkering and there is small chip missing from the nose of the comb and thin hairline cracks in either side of the grip. The rifle looks to have been used more as a sporting rifle based on the carry wear and with its gold washed Beach combination front sight. The rifle is additionally sighted with an open sporting rear and a short range folding tang mounted peepsight. Overall this is a quite endearing engraved Ballard rifle that looks to have seen years of honest use. (17478-2) {ANTIQUE}(3000/5000)...more

Winchester Pope Model 1885 Thick Side High Wall Rifle

Lot # 158 (Sale Order: 158 of 1138)

serial #118464, .308-405, 32" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. The top of the barrel is marked "H.M. POPE" and the bottom of barrel is marked "595 / W.I. / H.T. / 14/0 / 11/11/21 / H.M. POPE" and the barrel has five groove right hand twist rifling. The .308-405 is a 405 WCF cartridge necked down to .308 caliber, Pope made three barrels in this caliber, two sporting rifles and one Winchester single shot which he made for Lucian Cary. The barrel retains 97% original blue finish while the action retains 98% restored blue finish. The top tang shows an extra hole with filler screw which partially obscures the Winchester address. The top of the action interestingly shows a standard Winchester proof along with a mail order proof. This would make perfect sense for a rifle ordered directly from Pope on a High Wall action. The rifle is equipped with a standard Winchester plain straight grip buttstock with checkered steel shotgun buttplate. The forend is a large custom checkered beavertail threaded for a palm rest and with a sling swivel mounted at its tip, there is no corresponding swivel to the rear. The stocks rate excellent with lots of original finish remaining. The rifle is equipped with factory adjustable double set triggers and a Winchester style Schuetzen spur lever. The rifle is sighted with a globe front, no provision for rear and no tang sight; the barrel does wear a pair of target blocks. This is presumably the rifle that Pope made for Lucian Cary, however there is no provenance with it. A neat custom Pope High Wall. (17147-5) {C&R}(2000/4000)...more

Rare Winchester Junior Trapshooting Outfit With Winchester Model 20 Shotgun

Lot # 159 (Sale Order: 159 of 1138)

serial #9531, 410 bore, 26" barrel choked full with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of the shotgun retain about 98% original blue, the loss is due to a bit of age flaking here and there, most prevalent on the left side of the frame adjacent to the hammer; the forend iron has faded to plum. There is a sparsely scattered light handling mark here and and there and some areas of extremely light surface oxidation from having sat in storage for so long; there are a few light impact marks on the frame at the triggerguard retaining pin on its left side. The smooth walnut pistolgrip buttstock and forearm rate very good plus with all their original varnish showing only light wear along the sharp edges of the pistolgrip with numerous minor dings and handling marks near overall, there is a very tiny flake missing at the right front sharp edge where buttstock meets frame. The buttplate has been replaced with a more modern Winchester Repeating Arms buttplate, affixed with gold-colored screws. The shotgun rides in an original Winchester black synthetic carry case with green paper-covered press fiber interior. The complement of accessories includes a mostly sealed box of Winchester midget size clay targets. The periphery of the box is mostly sealed but a 7"x4" section of the box was torn open, somewhat unceremoniously as it would appear as though someone stuck a finger in the center of the box and merely ripped the edge off, it is however included. Inside we find what appear to be 98 original targets, only one of the packets is torn open and there are two clay targets missing. There are four sealed buff-colored boxes of Winchester .410 paper shotshells with chilled No. 8 shot. There is one buff-colored box which is opened but completely full and another box which has had its top also torn open, doubtless by the same fellow who couldn't wait to get to the clay pigeons, it containing 20 rounds of 410 paper chilled No. 8 shot shotshells, the lid of that box mostly deteriorated nearly completely. Also included is a nice Winchester Midget hand trap which rates very good plus to excellent, the bottom portion of its original box is present albeit somewhat tender. There is an empty 3 ounce tin container of Winchester gun oil which rates very good plus with only some minor scuffing. There is a full tube of Winchester gun grease, lightly compressed with much of its painted surface flaking off, in its original green Winchester box. There are two pamphlets regarding Winchester metal preparations, being oils and cleaners. There is a small owner's manual envelope which is slightly tattered and somewhat dog-eared, inside is a "General Instructions" pamphlet for Winchester Repeating Shotguns covering the models 12, 97, 11 and '01 shotguns. Overall a very nice and highly desirable Junior trap shooters outfit which is very complete, very seldom seen with (nearly) all the original pigeons. (37689-1) {C&R}(7000/9000)...more

Winchester Model 1885 Hi Wall Falling Block Rifle

Lot # 160 (Sale Order: 160 of 1138)

serial #8506, 45 Express, 30" barrel with a very good lightly pitted bore. The barrel has toned to a gray brown patina having some scattered oxidation stains. The frame has toned to a light gray pewter patina having some light pin prick pitting, light brown freckles and shows the factory hole for mounting tang sight and the hammer spring screw hole (often confused on these early thick sided models as an "added" hole). The left side of the barrel and frame are marked with British proofs. The smooth walnut straight grip buttstock and schnabel forend with ebony insert tip rates excellent as refinished long ago leaving the wood just shy of the metal. The stocks display just a few light dings and scratches along with a very thin 1/2" hair line crack behind the upper tang. The stock is fitted with a special order widow's peak buttplate that has toned to a gray pewter patina having some light pin prick pitting and brown freckles. The barrel is fitted with its original sights and the gun functions well mechanically. Manufactured in 1887. (176520-1785) {ANTIQUE} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection](1000/1500)...more

Sharps New Model 1863 Percussion Civil War Carbine

Lot # 165 (Sale Order: 165 of 1138)

serial #94562, .52 cal., 22" barrel with a bright very good plus bore which shows strong rifling and some scattered light oxidation and perhaps some widely scattered very light pitting. The barrel retains about 85-90% original blue, the loss is due to toning to plum, along with some muzzle wear and some scattered dings and handling marks from the years, most prominently a dinged spot on the right side of barrel just ahead of the forend and a small spot of light pitting atop the barrel, the left side showing a few minor impact marks at the rear above the forend. The frame retains perhaps 50% original color case-hardening which is quite vivid in the protected areas, the balance toned to a smooth brown and mottled gray case-hardened patina. The lockplate shows similar color case-hardening with the hammer a smooth mottled case-hardened patina, the lever with some strong case colors at its root. The buttstock rates very good to near excellent as lightly cleaned, primarily in the area of the butt, the section nearer the frame and lockplate is unmolested with the wood still proud of the metal in most areas, also with two good cartouches flanking the sling ring bar; there are remnants of some dings in the area of the butt, likely the cleaning was an attempt to remove them, the metal attoe is now very slightly proud. The forearm rates very good with overall minor dings and dents from the years, it is unmolested. The barrel is appropriately numbered to the gun and there is a small American Eagle stamped to the rear of the serial number just ahead of the lever spring mounting block. The lock is crisp and mechanically functional and this is a very honest and clean example overall. (37659-1) {ANTIQUE}(2500/3500)...more

The musket is equipped with a double leaf rear sight and split barrel bands. The lock remains crisp and what appears to be a proper tulip shaped ramrod is present. An honest great looking type I musket. (57631-13) {ANTIQUE}(1000/1500)...more

Colt Model 1855 First Model Sporting Rifle

Lot # 171 (Sale Order: 171 of 1138)

serial #380, .36 caliber, 24" round barrel with octagonal breech and a dark bore. This rifle features matching numbers on the barrel, loading lever, plunger, frame and cylinder. This rifle has the early adjustable rear sight mounted in topstrap along with a cleaning rod mounted on left side of barrel. The top of the barrel bears proper standard marking and metal surfaces retain a dark blue/gray patina on barrel and more of a brown patina on frame and cylinder. Barrel markings and serial numbers remain legible. The left side of the barrel has a cleaning rod mounted and the left side of the frame, just ahead of cylinder has a Colt's Patent oiler. The oiler looks to be a nicely made, later replacement. The lower tang shows a repair at the frame with the piece to rear of that area appearing to be a replacement. The stock is beautifully shaped and formed and shows nice rich color but, when removed it appears to be made of southern pine stained to this color. While this rifle has some apologies, these early Colt revolving rifles are rare and this would make a very acceptable example to fill a hole in a collection. (17629-1) {ANTIQUE}(3000/5000)...more

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 172 (Sale Order: 172 of 1138)

serial #147166, 44 RF, 24" round barrel with full magazine and a bright near excellent bore that shows just a couple small patches of very light surface oxidation. This is a very nice 1866 rifle. The barrel and magazine retain a pleasing smooth brown patina overall with generous traces of original blue visible in protected areas. The action shows well-defined edges and retains an even pleasing mellow patina. The hammer shows a good deal of faded original color case-hardened finish while the lever is an even rich brown patina. The walnut buttstock and forend are very good with the forend having been refinished and the buttstock showing some added oil finish. The buttplate is an original 1866 buttplate but is slightly undersized and is numbered to a different rifle. The stock appears to be a factory replacement as it shows the factory "(triangle)" with "I" at center stamped in the end grain at action, identical to the stamps commonly seen beneath the forends on so many lever action and single shot Winchester rifles. The rifle features standard open sporting sights which are later than the rifle. All markings remain clear and legible, the script serial number is a little light but remains fully legible. A handsome 1866 rifle with nice edges. (17535-19) {ANTIQUE}(4000/6000)...more
