U.S. Model 1850 Regulation Staff & Field Officers Sword By Sauerbier Presented To Capt. Herman Lipfe

Lot # 101 (Sale Order: 101 of 1138)

1 3/4" with three-quarter length wide and narrow fullers. The blade is nicely etched with foliate scroll, "U.S.", "E Pluribus Unum" in riband, shield, star and flags still retaining about 90% original gold wash. The presentation ahead of the etching has faded due to a light cleaning but remains visible under strong light. The reverse side of the blade reads "Presented at Brandy Station VA. Presented by Comp. E N.J. Vol. / to their Capt. HERMAN LIPFERT / camp near Brandy Station VA. 1864" and the obverse side reads "ARMY OF THE POTOMAC / 6th Corp 1st Division 1st Brigade 2nd N.J. Vol". The reverse ricasso has "H. SAUERBIER / MAKER / NEWARK N.J." maker mark. The blade has an overall bright pewter with scattered fine oxidation staining primarily on the forte. The brass hilt has a pierced guard decorated with Federal Eagle and scroll ending in an eaglehead quillon. The flat butt pommel has a decorative olive branch spine and scroll border surrounding an inlaid pewter pommel top showing an olive branch over a Federal Shield. The grip is covered in black leather and wrapped in smooth double brass wire. The brass is now a dull goldenrod patina and the grip shows minor wear on the leather and the wrapping loosening slightly but intact. The German silver scabbard has mellowed slightly with some scattered sparse staining and a period banded repair about 5" from the tip. The scabbard is engraved with "E Pluribus Unum" in a scroll bordered riband and a flying eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch between the hangers, a folite Federal shield along the body and a flower and leaves on the drag. Herman Lipfert was born in Germany October 10, 1837 to George Lipfert and Caroline (Catherine) Klingel and later immigrated to New Jersey where he was a jeweler by trade. Mr. Lipfert enlisted in the Army May 28, 1861 as a Sgt. of Co. D 2nd. N.J. Infantry, was promoted to 2nd. Lieut. 10/11/1861, 1st. Lieut. 9/5/1862 and Capt. of Co. E 9/14/1862. He later transferred to Co. C N.J. 15th Infantry and mustered out of service August 10, 1864. The N.J. 2nd. Inf. left June 28, 1861 with 1044 men and joined the 1st. N.J. Brigade. After the first battle of Bull the 2nd. went in to camp in Alexandria and participated in the fight at Golding's Farm, V.A., Gaines Mill, Manassas, Chantilly, Antietam, Gettysburg, The Wilderness and many others. After Grants campaign against Richmond on May 29 the 2nd. was ordered to Trenton and mustered out with only 315 men returning. Those whose terms were not up or reenlisted were assigned to the 15th. regiment with engagements at Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Cedar Creeks to name a few. Include with the sword is a folder containing copies of his enlistment papers, musters, records of N.J. soldiers, death certificate and picture of Captain Lipfert. A nice quality Officers sword presented presented to a Captain who no doubt saw great service during the war between the state. (57631-30)(10000/20000)...more

Colt 1860 Army Model Revolver And Belt Rig

Lot # 102 (Sale Order: 102 of 1138)

serial #23254, .44 caliber, 8" barrel with a near very good bore. This 1861 production civilian Army shows all matching numbers including the wedge and bears a pleasing even gray brown patina overall with good clear markings. The cylinder scene is perhaps 50% visible and the revolver is built on a four screw frame which is cut for shoulder stock. The iron backstrap matches the other iron components in color and the brass triggerguard bears a pleasing mellow patina. The one-piece walnut grip rates very good plus with a nice surface and color. The revolver comes with a buff leather belt with a militia panel belt plate c. 1850-1865 with a large single star at center and with 12 other stars around the circumference with intertwined floral vines. On the belt hangs a leather flap holster and a leather cap pouch. There is also a leather box which appears to be some sort of map case and is likely a later, early 20th century piece of gear. While the star on the buckle looks very much like a Texas piece, O'Donnell and Campbell's American Military Belt Plates calls is a militia plate that bears no particular state affiliation. An interested Colt Army rig. (17645-33) {ANTIQUE}(3000/5000)...more

James Warner Belt Model Percussion Revolver

Lot # 103 (Sale Order: 103 of 1138)

serial #16G, .31 cal., 5" barrel with an oxidized and pitted bore. This rare variant remains in very good condition and is equipped with the seldom seen five shot cylinder. The metal surfaces are a mix of pewter and brown with scant traces of original blue in the protected areas, in addition to oxidation blemishes, pitting and light handling marks. The etched cylinder scene is strong overall with a few areas thinning. The brass triggerguard rates near excellent with light handling marks. The smooth walnut factory grips rate very good with dents and dings. The barrel, cylinder, cylinder rod and trigger have correct matching numbers. The mechanism, timing and lockup generally work but do need some attention. Overall, a nice example of a rare variant of the Warner Belt Model. (86889-193) {ANTIQUE}(1000/1500)...more

Springfield Arms Company Warner Model Percussion Belt Revolver

Lot # 104 (Sale Order: 104 of 1138)

serial #86, .31 cal., 6" barrel with an oxidized and pitted bore. The metal surfaces of this extremely rare loading lever equipped gun are brown with scattered pitting and oxidation blemishes. The light scroll engraving on the receiver, triggerguard and grip frame is strong, as are the company markings "SPRINGFIELD ARMS CO." on the topstrap. The smooth walnut factory grips are correctly numbered to the gun and rate good to very good with scattered dents, dings and scratches. Timing and lock up are operational but the cylinder does bind on several chambers and there are two later added drilled and tapped screw holes on the topstrap which have removed the letters "F" & "I" in name Springfield. These holes appear to have held a later added sight which is now missing but the front sight is present. The topstrap slot does not correctly seat into the machined stud on the frame and appears to have been slightly bent in the past. This is a very fine example of a seldom seen percussion revolver. Smith & Wesson 357 Registered Magnum Double Action Revolver

Lot # 105 (Sale Order: 105 of 1138)

serial #46414 (registration No. 177), .357 Magnum, 6 1/2" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 95-97% original blue, the loss is due to high edge wear and a rotational ring on the cylinder, also with minute handling marks and tiny scratches very sparsely scattered here and there. The checkered walnut pre-Magna style grips with silver Smith & Wesson medallions rate very good showing some minor dings and handling marks, most prominent along the sharp edges of the butt, they are stamp-numbered to the gun. Included with the arm are the steel adapter plates and rubber center cushion which filled the gap between them. The grooved hammer and grooved trigger retain very good color case-hardening which is muting only slightly, primarily on the right side of the trigger. The gun is sighted with an orange bead King reflector front sight and a shallow u-notch rear sight and there is a factory lanyard loop installed at the butt. The gun times and locks up appropriately and all of the appropriate parts are matching-numbered; the serial number was electric pencil numbered on the butt to the rear of the lanyard loop however the numbers are somewhat smallish and certainly could be rectified by a talented craftsmen if one wished. A rather nice example overall, that likely could still be taken to the range for a vintage target session while still maintaining solid investment potential. (37715-5) {C&R}(4000/6000)...more

Smith & Wesson Model 1905 Military & Police Hand Ejector Target Revolver

Lot # 109 (Sale Order: 109 of 1138)

serial #474995, 38 Special, 6" barrel with an excellent bore. This fourth change target revolver retains about 97% original blue with most of the loss around the knuckle and left side of the frame, in addition to, light high edge wear, limited handling marks and the usual turn ring on the cylinder. The standard hammer and standard trigger retain lovely case-hardened colors with light operational marks. The diamond checkered walnut factory grips with gold S&W medallions are not correctly numbered to the gun but rate very good with light handling wear and strong scuff along a third of the butt on the left panel. Timing and lockup remain excellent and all appropriate parts are correctly numbered to the gun. The gun includes a factory box with the corners torn and repaired with masking tape. The repairs are partially obscuring the end label, although you can tell it is for a square butt M&P but, not if for a target model. The usual handwritten number on the bottom also does not match. The gun still remains in beautiful condition and has seen light use over the years. (87692-2) {C&R}(1000/1500)...more

Excellent Sauer & Son Magazine Sporting Rifle, Von Lengerke & Detmold Imported

Lot # 110 (Sale Order: 110 of 1138)

serial #254277, 30-06, 21" octagon barrel with a full-length integral rib and a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this exceptional rifle retain about 97% original blue, the loss due to light fading and contact point wear. The receiver ring is neatly matted as is the full-length of the barrels rib, a milled section at its center has the VL&D name and New York address, the caliber and makers marking are on the two diagonal flats. The bolt body and extractor are bright showing only light wear to the engine turning. The rifle is stocked full-length, Mannlicher-style in a nice grade of English walnut. Rifle features a rounded left side cheekpiece with shadowline, hard rubber pistolgrip cap, Oberndorf sidepanels, nice dual fish lip curls on the underside of the forearm and a lovely horn forend tip. There are checkered panels at the grip and a wraparound pattern at the forearm, which are masterfully executed and an un-engraved silver monogram plate along the toeline. The stock itself rates very good plus to perhaps near excellent with the minor dings and handling marks one would expect from a carefully hunted arm, showing just the hint of some tiny flakes beginning at the rear of the upper tang. Rifle features a single trigger, hinged floorplate and a dual-keyed forend with a 14 1/4" length of pull to the smooth case-hardened buttplate. The rifle is sighted with a simple bead front atop a sporting ramp, the hood is no longer present, there is a blank dovetail midway down the rib where the original rear sight once sat. The receiver has been drilled and tapped here in the states and a Lyman 57W sight has been fitted, likely at the same time a new bolt handle was fitted, it a low-swept, scope clearance-style handle, the rifle is not however drilled and tapped for scope use. The VL&D (Abercrombie and Fitch) records show the rifle selling in 1931 to Mr. Arthur J Moulton, then considered one of the richest men in America. He re-consigned the rifle to Abercrombie and Fitch in 1948 at which time it was sold to one William Mikkola (obviously a copy of these records can be ordered from Griffin & Howe, holders of the VL&D and A&F records, for a small fee). Overall a very beautiful rifle, masterfully executed and proofed in May 1930. (37657-227) {C&R}(4000/6000)...more

!!! NOTICE: This lot has a discrepancy. Please CLICK HERE for the discrepancy list.
serial #71701, 7x64 Brenneke, 27 1/2" Wilhelm Brenneke Krupp Laufstahl barrel with a bright excellent bore. The stock rates excellent and features a bone forend tip, pistolgrip cap and smooth butt with a nice chinstrap at the rear of the pistolgrip; the length of pull is 13 5/8". Currently the stock is un-checkered but is masterfully executed overall. The rifle is sighted with a bead front atop a sporting ramp and a two leaf rear, one standing, one folding. The action has a set of dual claw mount rings and bases which support a Carl Zeiss Zielvier telescopic sight with heavy German three post reticle and bright excellent optics. The scope itself rates very good to very good plus showing some minor wear and blue loss, the rings have toned primarily to a deep gray and plum. Someone's quality assemblage, the receiver, bolt handle and ring set are all numbered "71701" while the barrel is numbered "20728". The barrel features Brenneke's name and address "Wilhelm Brenneke, Leipzig" along with "Original Brenneke/Hochleistungspatrone caliber 7x64", this followed by the Brenneke trademark projectile with a superimposed capital letter "B". The witness marks on the underside of the action and barrel line up closely but not quite, although the sights are properly oriented to top dead center. The barrel features a soldered sling swivel base with 3/4" swivel, none is yet installed on the stock. Overall a very attractive rifle, obviously done by a craftsman of some talent, it would be wise to have the headspace checked as always before any thought is given to using the arm. A lovely magazine sporting rifle needing only some quality checkering. (37657-224) {MODERN}(2000/4000)...more

Stunning Custom Winchester Model 70 Rifle Made For Dr. Russel C. Smith

Lot # 117 (Sale Order: 117 of 1138)

serial #82230, 300 H&H, 26" Sukalle custom barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this nice custom rifle retain about 98-99% original maker-blue and are embellished with excellent quality loose flowing scroll with background punch-dot shading covering the entire receiver and bottom metal with 4" of coverage on the barrel ahead of the action and around the barrel makers marking. The bolt body is nicely jeweled and the handle extended and low swept for scope clearance, it remains brilliantly polished with only a small spot of staining on the knob. In addition to the nice quality scroll engraving executed by McTeer Engraving Company, there is a gold bear on the receiver ring, gold bighorn ram on the floorplate and Dr. Russell Smith's initials heavily inlaid in gold on the bow of the guard. The McTeer Engraving Company has also affixed a gold plaque to the right side of the receiver ring claiming the work: "Engraved For/Dr. Russel C Smith/By McTeer Engraving Co". Rifle is stocked Monte Carlo style in rosewood with maple forend tip and grooved flared gripcap and rates very good plus to excellent with much original varnish, scattered very light dings and handling marks and some light drying checks here and there from the years. The forend and pistolgrip show lovely borderless checkering patterns with carved fleur-de-lis accents, the grip pattern with an extended rear portion along the toeline. There are marquetry inlays of maple, purple heart and ivory and red colored plastic, ala-Weatherby-style, very neatly done. Following the McTeer Engraving Company's lead, custom stock maker J. D. Bates has affixed an oval gold monogram plate in the center of the flared pistolgrip cap which reads "Custom/JD Bates/Stocked". The rifle features no open sights and was neatly fitted by the maker with a Griffin & Howe quick-detach base and ring set on the left side of the action, the stock neatly flared to accommodate the base by the maker. The stock maker has finished the rifle nicely by adding a custom diamond-shaped gold monogram plate on the right side of the buttstock which reads "Barron/Dr. Russel C Smith/Wisconsin". The length of pull to the Pachmayr Old English rifle pad is 13 3/8" and the gun seems to function well mechanically. Dr. Russell Smith had a penchant for custom rifles and had very many lovely examples in his collection, he was very much the "patron saint of custom rifle makers" in his day, this example very very nice overall. The scope is marked with a painted "M", and features a post reticle and the optics rate very good and show a slight green tint. A leather scope cap and GI type leather sling are included. A very nice example of a World War Two British sniper rifle with a hard-to-find matching scope. (207630-27) {C&R} [Hall Rowland Collection](2500/4500)...more

Johnson 1941 Semi-Auto Rifle

Lot # 119 (Sale Order: 119 of 1138)

serial #2741, 30-06, 22" barrel with a near very good bore that shows a small area of pitting halfway down. The metal surfaces retain 97% reapplied matte blue finish with some cleaned up pitting on receiver and silvering on barrel and heatshield. The walnut stock set rates very good as cleaned with an added oil finish, a chip missing on bottom in front of magazine, and a few light dings and handling marks. The receiver is stamped with a Dutch acceptance star over a triangle with "CRANSTON ARMS". The bolt and receiver number do not match but this is correct as there was no attempt made at the Johnson factory to match numbers. The front and rear cross pins are missing. This restored 1941 Johnson rifle has had some restoration work done but it will likely make a great shooter while providing an example piece to the World War Two collector.
