U.S. Model 1860 General's Sword by Mckenney

Lot # 101 (Sale Order: 101 of 1099)

31" diamond shaped double edge blade maker marked "J.H. / McKenney / & Co. / N.Y." on the reverse ricasso. The balance of the blade is etched in script "Gen'l. J.M. Varian" with scroll and stand of arms on the obverse side and "N.Y." in sunburst with scroll and trophies on the reverse side. The condition of the sword is marvelous, the blade having an even gray color with scattered light oxidation and very fine pinprick pitting. The gold washed brass hilt has a silverplated grip wrapped in fancy brass wire, a decorative knuckle bow and pommel with acorn finial, cast Federal eagle on the static counterguard and shield with panoply of arms on the folding counterguard. The brass remains bright overall with plenty of original gold wash and the plated grip shows light tarnish which nicely highlights the tight wrapping. The nickel silver scabbard is equipped with brass triple ring hangers and a decorative drag. The scabbard has mellowed to an even soft gray with a few light dents and impact marks and the brass mounts have softened lightly still with protected areas of gold wash. Accompanying the sword is a dual knot red silk sash in excellent condition overall with only light stains and insect damage. Joshua M. Varian was a Captain of the 8th. New York Militia in 1861 and then Colonel of the 8th. New York National Guard in 1862 and 1863 and was a highly esteemed officer during the war of the rebellion. Included is a folder of muster rolls and letters written by Varian to the New York Times. A very fine example General's sword. (58357-39)

Browning Pigeon Grade Skeet Superposed Over Under Shotgun

Lot # 106 (Sale Order: 106 of 1099)

serial #15457S69, 12 ga., 28" barrels choked skeet and skeet with bright excellent bores. The barrels retain about 97% original blue, the loss is due primarily to just some even light fading and some light muzzle wear, the French gray at the bolsters very brilliant, the forend iron showing a bit of oxidation at its rear. The pigeon grade frame remains very nice with some light toning of the French gray and an area of light surface oxidation on the right belly of the frame which was very lightly cleaned and has left behind a light salt-and-pepper speckling of oxidation remnants. There are a couple other spots of very light oxidation staining here and there and on the bow of the guard as well. The gold trigger retains perhaps 50% original plate. The checkered walnut pistolgrip buttstock and the skeet style forend rate about very good with a small handful of minor dings and handling marks here and there. The high-gloss finish shows some crazing in the buttstock and there is a small crack beginning atop the rear tang and on the left side stock cheek. The forend is similar with some very nice grain figure, both pieces of wood showing some darkening where wood meets steel, perhaps signifying evidence of salt contamination. The rib is equipped with dual white target beads and the gun still locks up well and seems to function well mechanically. A very good pigeon grade skeeter manufactured in 1969. (38342-2) {MODERN}

Lot # 107 (Sale Order: 107 of 1099)

serial #FWE90918, 16 ga., 28" Nitro steel barrels choked modified and full with bright excellent bores, the left tube showing remnants of a professionally raised dent 8" from the muzzle and another 1 1/2" back, both were extremely well done. The barrels retain about 90% original blue, the loss is due primarily to even fading and muzzle wear, with the overall numerous tiny handling marks, most prevalent in the area of the forend; there is rib vibration noted about halfway down the barrels. The specialty grade engraved frame and lockplates retain about 92-95% original color case-hardening which is muted to a silvery case-hardened patina on the round carry portion of the frame, also showing a bit of light pinprick pitting in this area. The triggerguard shows very good original blue as does the hunter one trigger. The checkered walnut capped pistolgrip buttstock rates very good to very good plus showing the expected minor dings and handling marks from the years and the beginning of a very light flake at the rear of the top tang. The beavertail forend rates very good plus, also with minor handling marks, and some very tiny chips surrounding the forend release escutcheon. The shotgun has been fitted with a 1" screen face ventilated Pachmayr recoil pad for a 14 3/4" length of pull (13 3/4" to the rear of the wood) with drops of 1 3/8" and 2 5/8". The gun locks up tightly with the top lever still right of center and seems to function well mechanically, however the Hunter One Trigger selector switch is very stiff. A very usable 16 bore just awaiting October the 1 and your dogs. (38411-31) {C&R}

Rare L.C. Smith Specialty Grade Double Ejectorgun

Lot # 108 (Sale Order: 108 of 1099)

serial #RE84789, 12 ga., 32" ventilated rib barrels choked full and full with about excellent bores which show a small ding in the right tube 3" from the muzzle and a couple professionally raised dents in the left tube, one about 6" from the muzzle and the other just ahead of the forend on its underside. The barrels retain about 75% original blue, the loss is due primarily to even fading, and some sparsely scattered very light handling marks (a few minor scratches halfway down the right tube). There are some areas of light oxidation, some of which have left some light pinprick pitting near the breeches and near the muzzles. The frame and lockplates show the typical Specialty Grade engraving with loose open scroll and gamebird vignettes left and right. They are primarily a silvery smoky case-hardened patina with strong trace case colors behind the fences and around the contour line of the frame, showing some sparsely scattered light pinprick pitting; the bow of the guard shows remnants of original blue. The checkered walnut pistolgrip stock rates about very good with much original varnish and only light dings and handling marks from the years. There is a flake missing from behind the right lockplate and a small chip missing beneath it where stock meets frame, two cracks at the rear of the lockplate could easily be arrested if one wished. The left side of the stock shows a crack from the upper tang to the lockplate which seems tight and was likely effectively repaired. The special order beavertail forend rates very good as well with much original varnish and the checkering worn to flat-top. There has been a Morgan adjustable recoil pad professionally fitted for a 14 1/4" length of pull with drops of 1 1/8" and 1 7/8". The gun locks up tight, seems to function well mechanically and features dual ivory beads, single selective Hunter One Trigger and ejectors. Overall a very nice Specialty Grade "Elsie" that was likely someone's trap or live bird gun and certainly is worthy of some restoration efforts. (38381-18) {MODERN}

Colt Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter Revolver

Lot # 109 (Sale Order: 109 of 1099)

serial #72728, .44-40 WCF, 5 1/2" barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a very interesting revolver, and did not start life off as a Frontier Six Shooter, yet was clearly converted to that configuration by the factory during the period of use. The barrel retains about 95-97% original blue, the main loss being muzzle wear and a slight regulation of the front sight. The cylinder shows a bit more wear retaining perhaps 90% original blue with wear along the leading edges and a prominent turn ring on the cylinder. The frame retains about 97% Colt factory color case-hardening with some mild toning on the high edges and contact points, the hammer shows some flaky trace color case-hardening. The triggerguard and backstrap retain perhaps 95% Colt factory blue and there is a small threaded hole on the bottom of the butt and bottom rear of backstrap, perhaps for lanyard loop or perhaps for some shoulder stock attachment used to during the period. The one piece walnut grip rates very good with flaking varnish and high-grade burl figure, it fits very well but it is numbered "8186". There is a tiny slot cut into the top of the frame at the sighting groove, one side of which has been neatly filled (the other slot blank has fallen out), likely where there was once a rear sight blade installed, additionally the front sight blade has been slightly modified with a needle file to provide a "bead-style" sight picture. The included factory letter shows shipment in January 1882 to Schoverling Daly & Gales of New York City as a 45 Colt. Colt factory rework and rebuild marks however, "960B", are found on the inside of the backstrap, triggerguard, bottom of frame, root of the barrel beneath the ejector rod housing, underside of ejector rod housing and on the face of the cylinder, it would also appear as though the arm were factory refinished at the same time the conversion to 44-40 was done as the serial numbers are slightly light on the triggerguard and backstrap. Also included with the arm is an image of the consignors grandfathers firearms inventory book dated 1932, in which he mentions the arm was once a 45 Colt, logically dating the time of this arm's conversion to the early 1930s. The gun seems to time well and lockup properly. A very interesting factory-modified Single Action Army revolver. (38341-3) {ANTIQUE}

Lot # 110 (Sale Order: 110 of 1099)

serial #198493, 44-40 WCF, 5 1/2" barrel with a good to very good bore which shows evident rifling but with scattered light, and some moderate, pitting its full length. The metal surfaces on this salty old veteran are a pleasing smooth pewter gray patina retaining very good markings, the circled Rampant Colt slightly light. The roll-marked "Colt Frontier Six Shooter" is still prominent on the left side of the barrel and numbers are matching on frame, triggerguard and backstrap. There is the remnant of an oddly scattered pinprick pit here or there but they are very sparse and unobtrusive; the screw heads are overall unmaligned. The checkered hard rubber Rampant Colt grips rate about good, worn nearly smooth, the right grip with a small chip missing from its leading edge; they are un-numbered. The head of the cylinder base pin is slightly damaged however the gun does time and lockup well, albeit slightly loosely. This revolver has an overall very clean "frontier-used" look to it; manufactured 1900. (38171-23) {C&R}

serial #61407, .36 cal, 7 1/2" octagon barrel with an about good bore which shows strong rifling but with pitting its full length. Metal surfaces of barrel and the loading lever are a dull plum and pewter patina with some minor dings and handling marks, with light pitting near the muzzle and impact marks near the wedge. Cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver

Lot # 115 (Sale Order: 115 of 1099)

serial #129015, .31 cal, 6" octagon barrel with a bright very good plus bore which shows strong rifling but sparsely scattered light oxidation and some areas of light pitting nearer the breech end. The iron surfaces are all a dull pewter gunmetal gray with overall light brown oxidation staining and scattered areas of pinprick pitting. The barrel has a number of minor and moderate impact marks on its left and right flats as well as in the area of the top flat preceding the barrel address. The five-shot cylinder's scene is fully intact but the cylinder as well shows a large number of tiny impact marks, near overall, also with remnants of hammer rest pins on its rear. The triggerguard retains perhaps 90% original silver plate, the backstrap with perhaps 60% original silver plate, the worn areas a dull goldenrod patina. The one piece walnut grip rates excellent with much original varnish and only minor dings and handling marks from the years showing some light wear along the right side of the butt; it is antique ink pen-numbered "1015". All of the numbers are matching including the wedge and the gun times well mechanically for the most part, occasionally the cylinder will not index unless the muzzle is held the downward, likely a hand spring issue. The case appears to be Colt factory and rates about very good with an old repair to split its full-length on the lid and another about halfway across its length. The interior features an old chocolate-colored lining which has faded to orange within the lid. There is an assortment of cast projectiles, brass "Colts Patent" bullet mould with excellent cavities and minor dings and tiny impact marks on its exterior. There is a crossed pistol Eagle flask included with much original lacquer, nice blued top spring and separating seams. What appears to be an original combination tool is included, it is primarily a pewter gray patina with some light oxidation and there is a near empty tin of Hicks percussion caps included as well. Really a very attractive 1849 Pocket overall in this nice period casing. (38397-60) {ANTIQUE}

Early Smith & Wesson 44 Hand Ejector Revolver

Lot # 121 (Sale Order: 121 of 1099)

serial #2544, 44 Special, 6 1/2" barrel with an bright excellent bore which shows only two very tiny spots of light oxidation. The metal surfaces on this nice first model revolver retain about 98% top-quality restored blue finish, with the oddly scattered very light handling mark here or there and honest sharp edge wear with a light cylinder turn ring. Both hammer and trigger exhibit some vibrant color case-hardening with toning to a smoky mottled pewter gray on the right side of trigger and at spur of hammer. The checkered pre-magna style walnut grips rate very good plus with only very light handling marks and some light wear; they are stamp-numbered to another gun but fit very very well. The front sight blade appears to be a factory USRA style which has had a small bead of brass very neatly added during the period of use, the rear slot is unmodified. The gun seems to time well and function very well mechanically with frame, barrel and cylinder all numbered alike. A very attractive example overall that one must really look at twice to realize it is nicely refinished. A very nice 1908, first year of production, triple lock one needn't be afraid to take to the range. (38347-5) {C&R}

Smith & Wesson 22/32 Heavy Frame Target Revolver with Niedner Barrel and Single Digit Serial Number

Lot # 123 (Sale Order: 123 of 1099)

serial #2, 22 LR, 8 1/2" A.O. Niedner barrel with Malden Mass. address, and a bright excellent bore. This is an interesting revolver which appears to be correctly marked but has also had a bit of a hard life. The barrel retains perhaps 40% of what is likely Niedner's blue, the balance a pewter and flaked brown patina, also with a few dings and handling marks and some light pitting nearer the muzzle. Much of the frame was cleaned as well and shows a later blue, with remnants of pitting along the sides of the topstrap and some tool and impact marks on the exterior surfaces of the crane and a few on the frame proper. The hammer has had its spur shortened and was reblued when the frame was done, however the trigger retains some very good color case-hardening. The checkered walnut Smith & Wesson grips with 1917 patent date rate very good plus to near excellent, the right is pencil numbered to a different gun (16596). The bottom of the butt appears to have original Smith & Wesson polish and was unmolested during the cleaning of the upper portion of the frame, it is stamped only with a number "2", as-is the rear of the cylinder. While this makes no sense given the serial number range that these arms fall into, perhaps internally this was some type of shop sample or toolroom gun later "liberated" by some employee. The cylinder chambers are not recessed, which may be the key to the gun's interesting numbering; the assembly numbers on the frame and the crane match one another and the gun operates properly mechanically. A very interesting 22/32 overall with a very nice Niedner barrel and intriguing serial number. (37147-109) {C&R}
