New York State Percussion Buck and Ball Rifle by Smith

Lot # 489 (Sale Order: 489 of 1099)

Description Update (8/17/17): 1/2" crack at upper tang

serial #59, .42 cal. and 12 ga., 30" barrels with very good plus to near excellent bores which show a couple spots of very light oxidation. All the metal surfaces are a dull tarnished pewter patina, the barrel with scattered light oxidation, more prominent in the splash areas around the nipples and on the tang. The rifle features two dovetails at the front, one which supports an iron barleycorn sight, the other is vacant. The rear shows a simple step-elevator v-notch with the tang showing a windage adjustable peepsight. The gun is maker marked on the top barrel "P Smith Buffalo NY 59". The stock rates very good plus to excellent as lightly cleaned many years ago, it is birdseye maple and very coarsely checkered but nicely executed. The arm is fitted with back action locks and double triggers and seems to function very well mechanically. Two antique ramrods are included which are likely original equipment. Patrick Smith was active in Buffalo New York from 1835 to around 1881. An attractive buck and ball rifle, which would be all the more so were the metal cleaned up a bit. (37949-13) {ANTIQUE}

U.S. Model 1832 Artillery Short Sword by Ames

Lot # 496 (Sale Order: 496 of 1099)

19" blade which is mostly bright but also shows overall speckled oxidation staining and scattered light pinprick pitting, but is uncleaned and unmolested showing good original grind marks. The Eagle and Ames/Springfield marking are light at the ricasso due to light pitting in the area, the "United/States/1835" marking on the reverse ricasso is still evident. The brass hilt is a tarnished goldenrod patina with the Federal Eagle at the pommel still crisp. This example is retained only by the peened-over tang extension through the pommel cap, the grip area of the hilt un-riveted, there are three center punch marks where the rivets would have been drilled but never were; likely made by one of the contractors Ames used for their hilts. Included is an original scabbard with tarnished brass throat and tip chapes. The leather body retains intact seam stitching with some light and some moderate crackling of the outer leather surfaces with some moderate flaking toward the tip. The frog stud is missing from the throat chape. A very good plus overall example with a rare un-riveted hilt. (37949-25)
