Lot # 489 (Sale Order: 489 of 1099)
serial #59, .42 cal. and 12 ga., 30" barrels with very good plus to near excellent bores which show a couple spots of very light oxidation. All the metal surfaces are a dull tarnished pewter patina, the barrel with scattered light oxidation, more prominent in the splash areas around the nipples and on the tang. The rifle features two dovetails at the front, one which supports an iron barleycorn sight, the other is vacant. The rear shows a simple step-elevator v-notch with the tang showing a windage adjustable peepsight. The gun is maker marked on the top barrel "P Smith Buffalo NY 59". The stock rates very good plus to excellent as lightly cleaned many years ago, it is birdseye maple and very coarsely checkered but nicely executed. The arm is fitted with back action locks and double triggers and seems to function very well mechanically. Two antique ramrods are included which are likely original equipment. Patrick Smith was active in Buffalo New York from 1835 to around 1881. An attractive buck and ball rifle, which would be all the more so were the metal cleaned up a bit. (37949-13) {ANTIQUE}
