U.S. Model 1861 Percussion Contract Musket by Norris & Clement

Lot # 551 (Sale Order: 551 of 1099)

.58 Cal, 40" barrel with an oxidized bore. The barrel remains bright in places with oxidation throughout much of its length, while the bands are turning to a gray patina with oxidation throughout. The hammer is a dull gray patina with scattered light pitting and oxidation throughout, while the lockplate remains partially bright with scattered oxidation and light pitting. The walnut stock rates very good with an older dark oil finish, a rack number "33" on the heel, a few small chips, a few abrasions, scattered flaking, overall dings, scratches and handling marks. The buttplate is marked "U.S./33", the lock "S.N. & W.T.C./FOR MASSACHUSETTS", the lock is dated 1863 and the upper tang 1864. The hammer does not appear to be working correctly and there is no cleaning rod present.
