U.S. Model 1855 Percussion Pistol-Carbine

Lot # 226 (Sale Order: 226 of 703)

.58 cal, 12" round barrel with a lightly oxidized bore which retains strong rifling. The iron surfaces are a tarnished pewter gunmetal gray showing light pitting at muzzle, slightly more moderate in the flash areas around the nipple bolster and on the lid of the priming mechanism. The U.S. Springfield marking on the lock is present however the date is only partially, the Eagle on the lid of the priming mechanism is lost to the years. The brass furniture is a tarnished goldenrod patina and is very pleasing. The pistol's stock rates very good showing a repair to cracks ahead of each stock flat and an additional crack from the rear of the lock through the backstrap, continuing on the left side of the gun, it is unobtrusive. The buttstock itself rates very good as well showing perhaps an old light cleaning with the wood being slightly under in a few spots. The "U.S." marking on the tang of the buttplate remains strong and the stock is numbered "17", the buttcap of the pistol numbered "8". As-is usual, the buttstock fits slightly loose with a bit of wobble however the lock is crisp and mechanically functional. Really an overall very good example for the martial collector. (38426-12) {ANTIQUE}

Colt Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter Revolver

Lot # 228 (Sale Order: 228 of 703)

serial #323115, 44-40 WCF, 5 1/2" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel and ejector rod housing retain about 95% original blue, the loss is due to some light muzzle wear and wear along the outer edge of the housing, the right side of the front sight showing a few small impact marks. The cylinder retains a similar amount of original blue, perhaps 92%, the loss due to fading, leading edge wear and numerous circumferential rotational marks around its periphery. The triggerguard retains perhaps 97% original blue, the loss due to some very light flaking on the frontstrap, while the backstrap retains perhaps 90-92%, the loss due to flaking and even fading. The frame and hammer retain about 97-98% original color case-hardening which is very vivid in areas and muting slightly in others, the right side with a couple very light flakes of oxidation; the trigger shows some lovely pale fire temper blue. The one piece walnut grip rates excellent with much original varnish showing minor loss at the sharp edges of the butt and some midway down the side, it is numbered to another revolver some 700 numbers from this example, however its fit is absolutely perfect. Either the trigger or the hammer are slightly worn as the firing pin protrudes at the half cock notch and there is no loading notch, the hammer will hold at full cock; these are non-issues for any gunsmith of any talent. Really a very nice Colt Frontier Six Shooter overall in a very fine state of condition. (38542-1) {C&R}

Smith & Wesson No. 3 First Model American Revolver

Lot # 229 (Sale Order: 229 of 703)

serial #5607, 44 S&W American, 8" ribbed round barrel with a good to perhaps very good bore which shows strong rifling but with scattered pitting. The metal surfaces are a pleasing tarnished pewter patina and are mostly smooth with some scattered light oxidation which has also resulted in some sparsely scattered very light pinprick pits, more so on the barrel's right side. There are generous trace amounts of original blue, perhaps 15-20% remaining, primarily in the protected areas and on the right frame flat. The hammer retains some very nice case colors at the base of its spur with trigger and guard fading to a dull gray patina. The smooth walnut grips rate good showing an old cleaning many years ago which have left them slightly shy of the metal, the left grip with some initials lightly carved; they are numbered to a different gun. The revolver has excellent barrel-to-frame fit and functions very well mechanically. The barrel, frame, latch and cylinder are all assembly numbered alike. A very respectable First Model American overall with a very attractive look. (38315-234 LS 6-18) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T Steadman Collection]

Rare Whitney Kennedy Small Caliber Rifle Used In "Miller & Newton's Shows"

Lot # 230 (Sale Order: 230 of 703)

Description Update (11/7/17): Cleaned oxidation right front of barrel resulting in some pitting

serial #2963. 44-40. 26" full octagon smoothbore barrel with full magazine and an excellent bore. This is an exhibition "rifle" which is period engraved on the right side of the action "PROPERTY OF THE ONLY AND ORIGINAL / MILLER & NEWTON'S / SHOWS" with some fancy scroll border work between the lines. While we have been unable to find a reference to "Miller & Newton's Shows", the owners of the 101 Ranch were the Miller Brothers and we feel that based on the manufacture date of this rifle that the Miller & Newton Shows pre-dated the 101 Wild West Shows and were likely contemporary with the Buffalo Bill Wild West Shows which began in 1883. The barrel bears the early style marking "WHITNEYVILLE ARMORY, CT U.S.A. KENNEDY". The condition of the rifle is very nice with the barrel and magazine retaining about 85% evenly thinning original blue finish just blending slightly to brown. The action retains about 90% original blue finish with areas of thinning blending with a pleasing smooth brown patina. The hammer retains strong original color case-hardened finish while the lever retains traces of original blue with the balance flaked to a smooth brown patina. The plain walnut buttstock and forend rate excellent with 97% original finish remaining and with just a few scattered light handling marks. The gun is sighted with a German silver blade Rocky Mountain front sight and standard open sporting rear. This is a very neat and bona fide artifact from the Wild West Shows of 19th century America. An investment quality piece of Americana. (18315-99LTS201) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Steadman Collection]

Rare Factory Engraved Whitney Kennedy Large Caliber Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 232 (Sale Order: 232 of 703)

serial #S340, 45-60, 28" octagon barrel with full magazine and a fair bore. The action of this rifle is engraved in deep relief scroll with punchdot shaded background and panel scenes on either side. The left panel scene is oblong and shows a familiar hunting scene that is replicated in similar fashion on Winchester rifles depicting a hunter shooter from behind a tree at a stag which is hit and going down while a doe runs off in the background. The right side of the action shows a round panel scene with a beautifully depicted running bull moose. The bottom plate of the action is engraved "J. Dufresne", clearly period but in a different style and this could have been jeweler engraved for the original owner. As rare as the engraving on this rifle, is the pistolgrip stock, is even more rare. This pistolgrip isn't formed by merely bending the straight grip tang as the tang is clearly longer than a straight grip tang. The metal surfaces of this rifle are an overall even gray brown patina with all markings remaining legible. The barrel address is in block letters rearward italicized and includes the word "KENNEDY". The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of nicely figured American black walnut and rate good plus as refinished long ago and with considerable wear to the checkering and there is a single sling stud mounted in the toeline of the stock. The top tang is slightly proud of the metal and the rifle is equipped with a smooth steel shotgun buttplate. The rifle is sighted with a German silver blade Rocky Mountain front sight and standard sporting open rear. Mr. Steadman's notes state that this rifle came out of Vancouver when he acquired it. This rifle is very likely one-of-a-kind, an ultimate rarity for the Whitney Kennedy collector. (18315-116LTS389) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Steadman Collection]

Spencer Sporting Rifle

Lot # 235 (Sale Order: 235 of 703)

serial #353, 56-46 Spencer, 28" round barrel with an about very good bore showing frosting, oxidation and strong rifling throughout. The metal surfaces of this rifle have worn to gunmetal overall with areas of darker gray oxidation, freckling, pinprick pitting, dings and small tool marks scattered throughout. The marking on the top of the action has softened some but remains quite clear. The straight grip walnut stock and forend remain in good overall condition displaying nice figure and well defined edges on its fluted comb. There are areas of worn finish and small dings, chips, abrasions and handling marks throughout along with a 1" chip at the rear right side corner of the forend, a 4 1/2" older repaired crack running from the top of the wrist to right side lockplate and four additional small hairline cracks below the lockplate. The buttstock is fitted rather shy of the frame and exhibits a very little bit of play, the half cock notch is no longer functional and there is a small crack on the left side of the chamber. The hammer is still quite crisp at full cock and the mechanism appears to be fully functional. The folding ladder rear sight and front blade sight are present and the rear of the frame is drilled for the tang sight that, unfortunately, is missing. The magazine tube is present and the barrel and frame are numbered alike along with all of the other major components matching by assembly number "335". This Spencer sporting rifle is a good example of a well-used but honest piece. (138315-213LS4-15) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis Steadman Collection]

Extremely Rare Andrew Burgess Model 1875 Military Musket

Lot # 236 (Sale Order: 236 of 703)

NSN, 28" round barrel with full magazine and a bright excellent bore. The only marks that are visible on this musket are Burgess' hand stamped patent dates on the top tang which read as follows: "BURGESS PAT. / 1 7 1873 / & 10 19 1875". Maxwell states that the model 1875 Burgess was merely a series of prototypes and were likely all configured to appeal to some faction of the sporting or military community. This was clearly made to appeal to a government as a military arm but we have been unable to ascertain its chambering. It appears to be a bottleneck cartridge with a bore diameter of about .43", it will not chamber a 43 Spanish or a 43 Russian Berdan. The condition of this musket is superb with the barrel retaining 95% original blue finish. The action retains about 35% original blue with the balance flaked to a very smooth and pleasing brown patina. The blue loss is strictly due to flaking and not wear, the guns show little if any use. The left side of the action has its original pivoting magazine cutoff switch. The plain walnut buttstock and full length forend rate excellent with most of their original oil finish remaining and with nice raised grain on both forend and buttstock. The toeline of the butt shows some old added lacquer with a clean spot with original finish in the center, this appears to be where a label was once affixed and lacquered over, probably from a museum or collection label of some sort. The top two bands show mostly a smooth gray brown patina while the lower band shows lots of bright original blue finish. The right side of the forend shows a scratch between the lower and middle band from the lower band being moved forward for removal. The musket is sighted with a beaded blade front sight and a folding military style ladder rear. Andrew Burgess exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 and Maxwell states that these 1875 prototypes were most likely all on display at the exhibition. Burgess and Whitney's displays were in the same section at the Centennial Exhibition, in fact, their booths were numbers 1216 (Burgess) and 1213 (Whitney). Whitney contracted with Burgess in 1877 to manufacture arms under royalty for the two patents marked on the top tang of this musket. So it is not only conceivable, it is very likely, that Burgess and Whitney met for the first time at the Exhibition and it was these 1875 prototype guns utilizing the Burgess patents of 1873 and 1875 that spawned the Whitney Burgess Morse and Whitney Kennedy rifles. This is an extremely rare American lever action musket, one of only a handful of these arms known to collectors today. A tremendous opportunity for the collector of rare prototype and experimental American arms or those interested in the evolution of the American lever action rifle. (18315-4LTS33) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Scarce Lindner First Type Civil War Carbine

Lot # 237 (Sale Order: 237 of 703)

.58 cal, 20" barrel with a very good bore showing some darkness in the grooves and scattered light pitting. The in-the-white surfaces of this carbine have toned overall to a mixed patina of gray and silver with pinprick pitting, freckling, small dings and lightly cleaned areas scattered throughout. The lockplate shows evidence of a later applied blue that has mostly worn off and toned to a smooth gray. The straight grip walnut stock remains in about very good condition with areas of worn finish, minor oil soaking, small dings, chips and handling marks. There are four small repaired chips at the comb, a 1" hairline crack behind the lockplate, a 2 1/4" crack forward of the triggerguard and the stock shows a very professional repair on either side extending from just forward of the breech to the forward screws of the sling bar and lockplate. The toe of the stock is also shy of the steel buttplate. The inspection cartouche has softened but remains very visible, Edward Lindner's patent marking is present on the breech and the mechanism is fully functional with a crisp lock and strong breech spring. Only 892 of these first type carbines were manufactured and they were all issued to either the 1st Michigan Cavalry or the 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry. Overall a really solid example of these interesting carbines probably manufactured by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company right here in this mill complex. (138426-7) {ANTIQUE}

U.S. Model 1903 Springfield "Air Service" Rifle

Lot # 238 (Sale Order: 238 of 703)

serial #860856, 30-06, 24" 4-18 dated barrel with a very good to very good plus bore which shows strong evident rifling but with light frosting within the grooves. The metal surfaces retain 98% excellent quality restored darker gray-green parkerizing showing some sparse remnants of light pitting beneath which really must be scrutinized to be noticed. The bolt body and handle remain dark, the handle and knob mottling slightly to gray, the extractor is polished bright. The walnut stock is a newly made replacement which is museum grade, in fact the dimensions were copied from rifles in Springfield Armory's Museum, the handguard purports to be original and rates excellent, also as refinished (however it measures a full 6", authentic examples are purported to be 5 3/4"). The rifle features the 1/10" wide front sight blade; shortened, permanently affixed rear sight slide; solid barrel band with single screw retaining from the bottom and original 25 round box magazine floorplate with right and left-side Eagles head inspectors mark. The rifle's serial number falls within the accepted range for air service rifles. The story which accompanies the arm is that the rifle was in a barn fire and was moderately and in the case of the stock, badly, damaged. The metal surfaces were resurrected by refinishing, as was the handguard but the stock was too badly damaged to be repaired thus the new-made stock was manufactured utilizing Springfield Armory's dimensions. A narrative of the foregoing is included with the arm. A very attractive rifle overall without the $30,000 price tag commanded by unaltered specimens of this rifle. (37329-12) {C&R}

Outstanding U.S. Model 1898 Krag Rifle by Springfield Armory Issued to The 7th U.S. Volunteer Infant

Lot # 240 (Sale Order: 240 of 703)

serial #128232, 30-40 Krag, 30" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel retains 95% original blue, the loss is due to some light fading, few handling marks and some muzzle wear at the bayonet attachment point. The front and rear bands show nearly all their original blue with only a couple of light rub marks and the triggerguard retains 95% original blue with just light rub wear on the bow of the guard from the sling and a few small scuffs. The receiver retains some strong traces of dull mottled oil quenching with the races still honed bright showing only some light staining, the left edge of the receiver flaking to brown (it appears much darker under normal ambient light). The magazine cover shows excellent oil quenched mottled case-hardening with minor very light handling marks, the magazine gate is in a similar state of condition with nice mottled oil quenched case-hardening, toning to pewter only on the sharp edges and contact points. The bolt body and handle still remain bright, the knob toning only very slightly showing remnants of some very light surface oxidation. The extractor retains nearly all its pale fire blue with only the slightest wear on the sharp edges while the bolt shroud and safety have strong oil quenched colors, the striker a dark blue-gray toned to pewter on its rear face. The stock and handguard rate excellent and are an overall deep rich red russet showing light, very sparsely scattered handling marks from the years. There is a light left side 1898 cartouche, it is unmolested and merely filled with oil and handling grime from the years, the serifed P firing proof is in a similar state of condition. The buttplate shows only trace original blue with some light oxidation on its tang. The rifle is equipped with an 1896 rear sight and correct handguard. An original 1 1/4" military sling is included, it remains mostly supple and flexible with light flaking, very nearly worn through at a couple of the sling hook holes, it is "Rock Island Arsenal" and "EHS" inspected; a nice brass muzzle/front sight protector is included as well. The Springfield Research Service serial number lists show this rifle as being issued in 1899 to Company A, 7th U.S. Volunteer Infantry, one of the "immune regiments" composed of African-American men from Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee. The 7th was organized and mustered into service at Jefferson barracks Missouri in July 1898. They proceeded to Lexington Kentucky then to Macon Georgia where they mustered out in February 1899, losing 16 enlisted men and 1 officer to illness, 11 men deserted and 3 murdered. Really a stellar antique Krag from-which it would be hard to upgrade with the added bonus of being issued to one of these very interesting "immune regiments". (37329-6) {ANTIQUE}

Beautiful Winchester Model 1873 Deluxe First Model Rifle

Lot # 246 (Sale Order: 246 of 703)

Description Update (11/14/17): barrel is a later Winchester replacement barrel

serial #7553, 44 WCF, 26" octagon barrel with a very good bore which shows strong, crisp rifling but with scattered minor pitting and light frosting its full-length. This is a very attractive First Model 1873 deluxe rifle. The barrel retains about 90-92% original blue, the loss is due primarily to sharp edge wear and fading and flaking to brown, also with scattered minor handling marks or light scratches from the year, the magazine tube has toned to more of a softer brown patina showing pewter undertones along its bottom edge with some scattered very light pits behind the magazine tube band. The barrel is caliber marked on its top flat, signifying that this is a later barrel, its patina matches perfectly with that on the rest of the gun and clearly has been on the arm for many many years. Case color remains very good on the nosecap toning only very slightly, with the sling swivel showing generous trace niter blue. The frame and sideplates retain perhaps 80% original color case-hardening, muting in areas but very nice on the rear two thirds, also with sparsely scattered light oxidation staining and some light striations starting on the front flats. The hammer retains strong color case-hardening which is quite vivid, the lever showing colors primarily at its root, the balance being a mottled silvery and pewter gray case-hardened patina with some light oxidation staining. The single set trigger retains some strong pale blue at its root and seems to function properly. The buttplate shows some strong mottled smoky case colors with light oxidation at its toe, more prominent at the heel, also with some light pitting there. The straight grip checkered walnut deluxe grade buttstock rates very good to very good plus with a lovely feathercrotch grain figure, much original varnish and overall light dings and handling marks from the years; the forend is similar showing perhaps a few more dings and a tiny bit of chipping at the nosecap. The arm retains its original gold-washed Beach combination front sight, the gold wash quite vivid, and first model semi buckhorn v-notch rear sight. Strangely the very rear of the tang is cracked through the retaining screw hole, the case-hardening in this area is a grayish patina, therefore if one wished a skilled metalsmith could affect a welded repair from the underside and camouflage the repair very neatly. The lower tang is marked with the grade of wood "XXX", and is assembly numbered "115", the tang inletting in the stock is neatly stamped "5447" and "I.C." is stamped on the lower tang twice. The sliding dust cover is no longer present, replacements are available and could be nicely aged by a competent metalsmith. Lovely Custom Winchester Model 1873 Rifle Engraved by Heidimarie Hiptmayer

Lot # 248 (Sale Order: 248 of 703)

serial #578707B, 44 WCF, 24" round barrel. The barrel, dust cover, lever and hammer retain 98 to perhaps near 99% excellent quality engraver-applied deep blue. The nosecap receiver and sideplates are finished in-the-white and remain brilliant. The nosecap shows loose open scroll and a tiny bit of light oxidation staining on its right edge. The frame shows exquisite quality open scroll, banknote filigree and geometric bordering. The same nice scroll is repeated atop the action and on the dust cover, as well as the carry point of the belly of frame and cartridge lifter. The right sideplate shows a Rocky Mountain trapper setting a steel jaw leg hold trap with the left side showing a very nice depiction of an American Indian on horseback, hunting buffalo with a bow and arrow. The work is signed beneath the lever by Heidi Hiptmayer and dated 1973. The straight grip walnut buttstock and forend rate excellent as refinished showing a handful of minor dings and handling marks from the years and lovely wraparound checkering in a borderless pattern. Klaus and Heidemarie Hiptmayer were trained in Ferlach and emigrated to Canada in the 1960's. Now retired, Klaus did phenomenal stock and metal work and Heidemarie was an engraver of stunning talent (she is sadly no longer with us). The front sight is a custom ghost ring style made during the period of use, the rear is a typical Rocky mountain semi Buckhorn style and all of the factory markings remain intact. An absolutely stunning rifle with very pleasing subject matter from this gifted pair of gunmakers. (38555-5) {MODERN}
