German Kkw Bolt Action Rifle by Gustloff Werke with SA NSDAP Marking

Lot # 1775 (Sale Order: 776 of 837)

Description Update (3/14/18): Additional small crack behind upper tang

serial #252466, 22 LR, 26" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces have been cleaned to a silvery-gray with a few spots of light pitting, scattered traces of original blue, freckling and oxidation staining. The walnut stock rates very good as cleaned with a lightly added varnish, a faint "SA NSDAP" roundel on the left side of butt, an 1/2" crack on the left side of butt, some flaking, scattered dings and handling marks. The handguard is loose, the rear sight is mismatched and there do not appear to be any other serialized parts. Several of the parts are marked with a commercial German "(Eagle)/N" proof marking. An interesting KKW rifle that will be good for the fledgling German collector. (208585-47) {C&R}

Austrian Buchsflinte Combination Double Hammergun by Sigott

Lot # 1781 (Sale Order: 782 of 837)

U.S. Model 1852 Regulation Naval Officers Sword belonging to Dr. Bradford H. Peirce

Lot # 1782 (Sale Order: 783 of 837)

This is a regulation officers model 1852 naval sword from William Read and Son Boston. This particular sword was the property of Doctor Bradford H Peirce and was consigned by his ancestor. The blade measures 30" and is etched with a martial panoplies on reverse and obverse, the makers name on the obverse ricasso "Wm Read/& Sons/Boston/Mass". The blade is mostly bright but does show a number of light and a number of moderate, spots of dark brown oxidation, many of which have resulted in light pitting. The brass scabbard washer is in place at the base of the blade and the hilt is a very nice a dull ochre patina. The "USN" and oak leaf with acorn decoration is still prominent. The shagreen wrap is near fully intact with only some very light loss at the rear of the three ribs near the pommel. The braided wire wrap is fully intact and there is a nice Naval Officers sword knot attached as well, rating very fine, its lower sewn seam has come undone, the knot now "open", it could likely be re-stitched in short order. The scabbard is included and is somewhat dry but intact. Most of the black covering has flaked away it is however un-kinked and the stitching is intact along its rear. The throat, mid-hanger and tip chape are all present, all a dull ochre patina as well. Doctor Bradford H Peirce of Cambridge was an important Boston-area Doctor and was prominent during the influenza outbreak of 1918-19 in maintaining and restoring health in that area. He was also a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps, U.S. Naval Reserve, while "Peirce" is the correct spelling, he may be found in many journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, listed incorrectly as "Pierce", there is however only one Doctor Bradford H Peirce from Cambridge. He would later become the first Director of the Plymouth County Hospital. "A well regarded Harvard trained physician. Dr. Pierce was loved by patients and workers alike, and helped keep the sanitarium a well respected Tuberculosis hospital throughout his tenure. Dr. Pierce resided in the superintendents mansion located along High Street at the edge of the sanitarium property. The Town of Hanson later named a street that borders the sanitarium property after him, Pierce Ave, to show their gratitude to the beloved physician." A very nice sword overall, sadly suffering from a bit of poor storage, once belonging to a dedicated physician from the greater Boston area.An image of the good Doctor is included in his Naval uniform, seated with colleagues. Austrian Model 1854 Lorenz Percussion Musket

Lot # 1799 (Sale Order: 800 of 837)

About .58 Cal, 36 1/2" barrel with an oxidized bore. The metal surfaces are a dull gray patina with some scattered pitting and oxidation staining. The hardwood stock rates good as-cleaned with a repaired break at wrist, an older added varnish, a couple cracks behind lockplate, a few chips, dings and scattered handling marks. The lockplate is marked "860" and all three bands have the same number that appears to read "909". The hammer appears to operate sluggishly, there is no rear sling swivel or rear sight present. A good example of these imported Civil War era muskets. These rifles were typically in .54 cal but a read of a bore gauge shows that this rifle is an unmistakably larger caliber than that. An interesting Austrian Civil War era musket overall. (208613-16) {ANTIQUE}
