Very Fine Smith Civil War Percussion Carbine by Mass. Arms Co.

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 600)

serial #21383, .50 cal, 21 1/2" barrel with a bright near excellent bore showing some scattered fine oxidation and strong rifling throughout. The barrel of this lovely carbine retains about 96% original blue showing some areas thinning to gray-brown patina under bright light, a couple errant freckles and some other minor handling marks. The action and hammer show bold case-hardened colors throughout with some areas toning to a mild gray patina and some scattered light freckling. The barrel band has mostly toned to a pale brown patina but the triggerguard and lower tang show strong streaks of original bright blue. The screw heads show some remnants of nice pale fire blue while the latch spring retains almost all of its brilliant fire blue showing just some minor thinning. All markings remain crisp and clear with the Mass. Arms Co. address, Poultney & Trimble address and Smith's patent information on the left side of the frame and "A.J.N. / P" on the left side barrel flat. The smooth walnut stocks remain in near excellent condition showing a small abrasion on the left side wrist, some smaller scattered dings and light handling marks. The stocks retain almost all of their original finish and the left side buttstock is stamped with crisp inspector cartouches "AJN" and "JM". The sling ring, bar and original sights are intact and the barrel, barrel frame and frame are matching. Lock-up is excellent and the hammer functions crisply. This Smith carbine would be an excellent addition to any U.S. martial arms collection. (13C9434-23) {ANTIQUE}

Maynard Second Model Civil War Percussion Carbine

Lot # 27 (Sale Order: 27 of 600)

serial #16754, .50 cal, 20" round barrel with octagonal breech and a bright very good plus bore showing some small areas of scattered light pitting and strong rifling throughout. The barrel of this very fine carbine retains about 94% original blue with most of the loss due to some small spots of light oxidation staining and pinprick pitting scattered about, light handling marks and faint thinning under bright light. The action shows some lovely case-hardened colors throughout with areas toning to a pleasant mild gray patina along with some scattered light freckling and fine pinprick pitting. The lever has mostly toned to a medium gray patina showing some light pitting scattered about its length and the screw heads show some light slot wear but most still retain lovely fire blue. The smooth walnut buttstock remains in near excellent condition showing a thin streak of darkening behind the lower tang form some sort of contaminant, scattered light dings and handling marks with otherwise strong original finish and crisp "AJN" and "JM" inspector cartouches. The sling bar and ring are intact, the action locks up nicely and the hammer function crisply. A lovely second model Maynard for the U.S. martial collector. (13C9434-22) {ANTIQUE}

Sharps New Model 1865 Percussion Carbine

Lot # 28 (Sale Order: 28 of 600)

serial #C,30469, .52 cal, 22" six-groove barrel with a mostly bright very good plus bore showing some scattered light pitting, the chamber area showing evidence of cleaning and strong rifling throughout. The metal surfaces of this carbine have toned to a mottled gray patina overall showing evidence of an older light cleaning with scattered remnants of fine light pitting and small dings throughout and some light tool marks on the left side barrel near the breech. The screw heads show some light to moderate slot wear, the barrel markings have softened slightly but remain remarkably clear as do the frame markings and small sub-inspector stamps throughout. The walnut stocks remain in about very good condition as lightly cleaned and refinished long ago showing a few moderate dings along the bottom of the wrist and forend, an old pattern of scratched lines along the right side butt, some other smaller dings and handling marks. There are still some ghostly remnants of the original inspector cartouches on the left side wrist. The screw head for the lever spring has broken off causing the spring to be loose but the action otherwise seems to function well mechanically. The barrel is matching the frame, the sling bar, ring, original sights and pellet priming mechanism are all intact. A somewhat salty but solid example of a scarce variant still in its percussion configuration and with a rather nice bore, only about 5000 were made with the 1865 marking. (13B9434-24) {ANTIQUE}

Sharps New Model 1859 Cartridge-Converted Carbine

Lot # 29 (Sale Order: 29 of 600)

serial #69398, 50-70, 22" three-groove barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel of this attractive carbine retains about 97% arsenal refurbished blue showing just some scattered small spots of light oxidation staining, freckling and handling marks. The barrel and rear sight markings have softened form the refurbishment and remain partially legible. The action is toning to a pleasant smoky gray case-hardened patina still retaining bold colors along the hammer, left side and breechblock. The front band and buttplate have likewise toned to an attractive smooth smoky gray patina while the intact patchbox remarkably shows some very nice remnants of colors. The right side action markings remain quite crisp while the left side patent markings are partially intact and the tip of the firing pin has broken off but it nevertheless retains almost all of its brilliant fire blue as does the extractor. The smooth walnut stocks remain in very good plus condition showing perhaps a little older-added finish and darkening from the years along with scattered dings, a very small shallow chip at the toe and some small hairline drying cracks along the butt and behind the lockplate. The left side butt has a clear "DFC" rebuild cartouche but as-noted earlier the patchbox is still present; evidently the stock was still in suitable condition when the carbine was converted. The sling bar and ring are intact, the barrel is matching and the action seems to function well mechanically. A fine cartridge-converted Sharps carbine. (13B9434-32) {ANTIQUE}

Fine U.S. Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol by Johnson

Lot # 31 (Sale Order: 31 of 600)

.54 cal, 8 1/2" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a lovely pistol in the original flint that appears to have seen little to no service use. The metal surfaces remain partially bright showing some sparsely scattered fine pinprick pitting, a couple small dings and the buttcap and triggerguard show evidence of a light cleaning with some remnants of minor old pitting. The lockplate has mostly toned to a mottled gray patina showing a hint of smoky case-hardened colors in the protected areas between the frizzen spring, the frizzen spring and a few of the smaller parts also showing good remnants of straw color. All markings remain quite crisp and clear with "US / JH / P" at the breech and "US. / R. JOHNSON / MIDDN CONN / 1842" in the center of the lockplate. The smooth walnut stock remains in very good plus condition showing small cracks at the bottom right edge of the grip and ahead of the lockplate, a more moderate crack through the left side of the grip and some scattered light dings. These issues could likely be addressed by a good woodman and the stock is otherwise very attractive with nice edges, strong original finish and two wonderful cartouches on the left flat. All of the lock parts are matching by assembly code "VII" and the pan and lock inlet of the stock stamped with corresponding "*M". The swiveling ramrod assembly is intact and the lock functions crisply. A very attractive example of these handsome U.S. martial pistols. (13B9434-33) {ANTIQUE}

The in-the-white metal surfaces of this very fine pistol are a pleasant silvery gunmetal patina showing a few small areas of lightly cleaned pinprick pitting and a couple scattered light dings. .64 cal (worn to .70), 10 1/8" barrel with a moderately oxidized bore. This arm has been rather neatly re-converted to flint and the metal surfaces are a mottled gunmetal patina showing remnants of old light pitting throughout and some scattered light dings. Smith & Wesson No. 3 Early First Model American Civilian "Vent Hole" Revolver

Lot # 36 (Sale Order: 36 of 600)

serial #424, 44 S&W American, 8" barrel with a good bore that shows light pitting and rifling throughout. This is a very honest and high condition revolver which shows matching assembly code "K8" on side of grip frame, rear face of cylinder, rear face of barrel and on underside of latch. This is one of the early style revolvers that has the "vent" or "oil" hole in the bottom flat of the barrel just ahead of frame. The revolver is in original nickel finish with 80 - 85% of that finish remaining with most loss due to peeling on barrel. The areas of exposed metal show a pleasing smooth gray brown patina. The nickel has faded some over time and has a very pleasing antique look with screwheads remaining generally quite clean. The revolver wears its original pair of two-piece walnut grips which are stamp numbered to the gun on the interior surface. The grips rate very good overall with perhaps 25% original finish remaining and with just the normal light handling marks we would expect to see on a revolver that is 150 years old. The revolver locks up tight and cycles very crisply. A fine example of these early and desirable large frame Smith & Wesson revolvers. (1C9474-68) {ANTIQUE} [Dr. John W. Hall Collection]

REMINGTON & SONS ILION, NEW YORK U.S.A. / NEW MODEL", the entire marking remains crisp and strong as is the engraving on the frame. The right side of the frame has a factory added ejector rod mounted with corresponding locking notch cut into loading lever. The condition as stated is wonderful with 95% bright original nickel plated finish overall with primary loss on the high edges, some flaking on the cylinder and thinning on the triggerguard. There are some areas where there is light bubbling on the front of the frame and the bottom of the barrel shows some light impact marks. The two-piece walnut grips are pencil numbered on inside surfaces and they rate excellent with over 90% original finish and perhaps a little added light oil; the right panel shows some impact marks in the butt. The hammer shows lovely faded original color case hardening. A very fine example of these quality conversions with just a taste of Remington's lovely engraving. (1B9471-32) {ANTIQUE}

Fabulous Remington Model 95 Double Deringer with Original Box

Lot # 38 (Sale Order: 38 of 600)

serial #175, 41 RF, 3" barrels with bright excellent bores. This is a lovely Type II pistol retaining about 97% original bright blue with most of the loss due to just a couple small areas flaked to gray patina along the backstrap, a hint of minor high edge wear and a few other light handling marks. The extractor and barrel catch retain all of their pale fire blue and the Remington Arms Co. address is crisp and clear. The black checkered hard rubber grips remain in excellent condition, the only loss being a very small circumferential chip near the left panel escutcheon that is missed at first glance. The barrels are matching the frame and lock-up is tight, the hinge is completely intact and the hammer functions crisply with properly pivoting firing pin. The factory maroon box contains an excellent condition, likely original blued steel cleaning rod and the box itself remains in very good plus to perhaps near excellent condition showing scattered light scuffs, scratches and a small ding on one side of the lid. A set of initials and "550" are written in pencil on the underside of the box. The appropriate end label is completely intact and clearly legible while the interior Remington Arms Company markings with loading directions and "BLUED" designation are likewise crisp and clear. These popular pocket pistols were generally well-carried and are extremely difficult to find in such nice condition, the boxes arguably rarer than the pistols themselves. This example would make a truly fine addition to any advanced collection of Remington arms. (139362-76) {C&R} [Edward W. Marron, Jr. Collection]

Lovely Custom-Engraved Remington Model 95 Double Deringer by Joseph Fugger

Lot # 39 (Sale Order: 39 of 600)

serial #L505, 41 RF, 3" barrels with moderately oxidized bores showing evident rifling throughout. This Type III Pistol has been exquisitely embellished in full coverage by renowned engraver Joseph Fugger, Griffin & Howe's in-house artisan from 1927-1960 who studied with Rudolph Kornbrath and was mentor to Winston Churchill and Robert Swartley. The pistol features wonderful crisp flowing foliate scrollwork throughout with fine stippled shading and a repeating rose motif. The sight and barrel ribs feature a repeating geometric motif and the Remington Arms - UMC Address has been inlaid in gold. Mr. Fugger has signed his work in very small lettering along the lower edge of the right side barrel rib "JOS FUGGER ENGRAVER". The metal surfaces retain about 98% fine-quality post-engraving blue showing just a few spots of minor high edge wear, handling marks, some remnants of fine pinprick pitting in a few isolated areas and the frame taking on a pleasant plum patina. The smooth mother-of-pearl grips remain in near excellent condition showing one very tiny chip at the back edge of the right panel, some light handling marks and some areas a little bit shy of the frame. The barrels are matching the frame, lock-up is solid, the hinge is intact and the hammer functions crisply with properly pivoting firing pin. A beautiful little deringer that is a fine testament to the master engraver's art. (139362-68) {C&R} [Edward W. Marron, Jr. Collection]

Remington New Model Army Percussion Revolver with New Jersey Markings

Lot # 42 (Sale Order: 42 of 600)

serial #71750, .44 cal, 8" octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this NJ surcharged revolver retain about 80-85% original bright blue showing areas flaking to gray-brown patina scattered throughout, a few small spots of light pinprick pitting and some other minor handling marks. The base pin and trigger retain a healthy amount of brilliant fire blue, the hammer shows very good case-hardened colors toning to a smoky gray patina with a few spots of minor staining and the triggerguard has toned to a rich ocher patina showing some light handling marks. The barrel address and patent markings remain crisp and clear as do the sub-inspector stamps on the major components and large "N.J" on the left side of the barrel; there is no NJ stamp on the frame. The smooth walnut grips are mismatched both pencil-numbered "71666" and fit somewhat shy of the frame, although this still falls within the New Jersey range and they otherwise remain in very good plus condition showing a small thin chip at the heel of the left panel, some scattered light dings and no cartouche. The barrel and triggerguard are matching the frame, the cylinder is un-numbered and the action seems to function well mechanically with excellent timing and lock-up. A fine example with desirable markings for the Remington collector. (139362-10) {ANTIQUE} [Edward W. Marron, Jr. Collection]

Fine Remington New Model Navy Percussion Revolver

Lot # 43 (Sale Order: 43 of 600)

serial #36373, .36 cal, 7 3/8" octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this revolver retain about 80% original bright blue with overall patches of flaking toning to a nice gray-brown patina along with a turn line on the cylinder and some other light handling marks. There is a very small chip at the edge of the frame behind the triggerguard but it does not effect the retention of the guard and there is a tiny casting flaw at the top edge of the hammer, but both are rather unobtrusive and do not detract much from the fine condition of the arm. The base pin and trigger retain almost all of their brilliant fire blue and the hammer shows bold case-hardened colors throughout toning very slightly to a smooth gray. The triggerguard also remarkably retains about 98% original silver finish showing some very faint edge wear and is taking on a lovely dark tarnish. The barrel address and patent markings remain crisp and clear. The smooth walnut grips are pencil-numbered to the gun and remain in excellent condition retaining 98% antique varnish showing just some light edge wear and a few sparsely scattered minor dings mostly along the right panel. The barrel and triggerguard are matching the frame, the cylinder is un-numbered and the action seems to function well mechanically with excellent timing and lock-up. A very attractive example of the lower-production Navy Model seldom seen with strong condition. (139362-6) {ANTIQUE} [Edward W. Marron, Jr. Collection]

The bolster and hammer have a particularly beautiful form, again a step above his normal extremely fine work. The barrel is engraved on top flat "EDWARD ANSCHUTZ. PHILADELPHIA" and from just ahead of this marking to the muzzle, the top flat is finely hand matted. The patent breech and top tang bear the same lovely engraving as the lock with a lovely shell pattern where the bolster meets the tang. This engraving is also found on the buttplate tang, triggerguard and triggerplate. The condition of the rifle is spectacular. The barrel retains 90% evenly thinning original brown finish blending with a pleasing patina. The lock, breech and tang all retain at least 90% original color case-hardened finish which is just darkening slightly and has a beautiful antique appearance. The buttplate retains 85% original nickel plated finish which has toned beautifully to a German silver color with only real loss coming on inside of bottom prong. The triggerguard retains virtually all of its original nickel plated finish which matches the buttplate color perfectly. The trigger plate bears vibrant original color case-hardened finish with the forward tang of the triggerplate showing a vacant threaded hole for palm rest which is no longer present. The walnut stock is of the finest quality with straight grain from the forestock to wrist, then showing wonderful figure through the butt. The forestock terminates in a tasteful Schnabel tip, lacking the shell motif he was sometimes known to use. The condition of the stock is superb; 95% plus original finish remains, checkering is crisp and edges extremely sharp. The rifle is sighted with a fine post and bead globe front, spirit level at mid position and a fine tube peep sight mounted in integral base on tang. The rifle still retains its original false muzzle and comes with a green painted tin box which contains a bullet mold, swage, patch cutter, an unusual ladder sight which is interchangeable with the tube peep, combination turn screw / nipple wrench, an extra nipple, modern brass powder measure, funnel, oiler, a really cool antique pencil and most interesting, a brass door plaque which is engraved "Eduard Anschutz". . This is the finest Edward Anschutz rifle this writer has ever handled, it is clearly one of the very finest in existence. An investment quality rifle from this fine Philadelphia maker. Interesting Three Barrel Percussion Combination Gun by F. Deland of Memphis, Michigan

Lot # 48 (Sale Order: 48 of 600)

.40 caliber rifled barrels over .75 caliber smoothbore, 28" barrels all with bright excellent bores. This is a very nice quality gun that is in a very interesting configuration. In addition to being a double rifle over smoothbore, which is unusual, the right back action lock features both a conventional percussion hammer that services the right rifle barrel, in the same lockplate resides a mule ear hammer which services the undermounted smoothbore barrel. There are conventional double triggers for the rifle hammers and a third trigger which operates the under barrel. The top of the right barrel is stamped simply "F. DELAND" adjacent to the rear sight, this is the only marking found on the gun. There is a single ramrod mounted on the right side of the barrels which uses one end to seat the rifle barrel and has a trumpet shaped top on the opposite end to load the smoothbore barrel. The barrels show a pleasing mix of original brown finish and a smooth brown patina with strong damascus pattern visible their entire lengths. Both back action locks and tangs show an even smooth gray patina with generous traces of faded original color case-hardened finish. The straight grip buttstock is of highly figured American black walnut and rates excellent plus, it may have been lightly cleaned long ago but the surface shows age and over 90% oil finish is remaining. The checkering on the wrist remains clean and strong. There is a narrow sliver perhaps 3/4" long at the top of the right lock just to the rear of the hammer. The gun features a smooth steel shotgun buttplate and a simple round patchbox, both of which are very smooth and show an even gray patina. The gun is sighted with a small blade front and open rear with nicely scalloped edges. A very nice quality and interestingly configured Michigan-made percussion combination gun. Interesting and Fine Philadelphia Percussion Halfstock Sporting Rifle by T.D. & Co.

Lot # 49 (Sale Order: 49 of 600)

.48 caliber, 28" octagon barrel with an excellent bore. The patent breech of this rifle is equipped with a bolster on both sides with threaded nipple sockets on each side which would service the same barrel however, the left socket is not drilled through to the bore of the barrel. The top tang which the breech fits into has flared spark deflectors on each side and the left side of the rifle has a sideplate that is the same shape as the lockplate. The left nipple socket is filled with a "blank nipple" which is slotted on top for removal with turn screw. This configuration involved a lot of extra work for reasons that are not easy to put your finger on but is found on high-quality German arms for a very short window of time. The lockplate and sideplate are uniquely shaped and the lock features a European style rotating safety mounted ahead of hammer. The lock and sideplate feature beautiful loose floral scroll with nice geometric borders. The rifle is iron mounted with the triggerguard, round patchbox, toeplate and buttplate tang all show nice loose floral scroll. The top flat of the barrel is marked "T.D. & Co. / PHIILADA", cursory research did not locate a maker by such name. The condition of the rifle is excellent with the barrel retaining about 90% original brown finish which is thinning evenly and blending with a pleasing smooth brown patina. The locks and all iron furniture shows a pleasing medium gray patina overall with metal surfaces smooth and generally free of any pitting. The stock is of nicely figured American black walnut and rates excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with sharp checkering on wrist and a nicely formed cheekpiece. Edges remain crisp, wedge escutcheons are silver ovals while the forend tip is of pewter. The rifle is sighted with a small blade front and a bold fixed rear open barrel sight. A period and likely original ramrod is present beneath barrel. This is a very intriguing rifle which exhibits the quality we expect to see on a Philadelphia made gun. Fine Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 50 of 600)

serial #329644, .31 cal, 4" octagon barrel with a bright perhaps near excellent bore showing a few scattered tiny pinprick pits and strong rifling throughout. The barrel of this 1871-made revolver retains about 85% original bright blue with most of the loss due to light flaking along the top and side flats toning to a pleasant gray-brown patina and some other scattered light handling marks. The five-shot cylinder has mostly flaked to a mild gray patina showing a few flakes of bright blue scattered about and light operational wear. The stagecoach cylinder scene shows areas that have softened slightly but remains mostly clear. The loading lever and frame retain about 95% vibrant case-hardened colors with just some scattered light freckling and small areas toning to silvery gray patina. The hammer shows a small ding at the edge of the spur but also retains strong case-hardened colors throughout while the trigger, wedge and many of the screw heads show nice fire blue, the wedge screw is a more modern replacement. All markings remain nice and clear, the single line New York address and "COLTS PATENT" on the frame particularly crisp. The triggerguard and backstrap have mostly toned to a mild ocher patina showing some light handling marks and remnants of silver finish lurking about the protected areas. The smooth one-piece walnut grip is ink-numbered to the gun and remains in excellent condition retaining almost all of its original varnish that is slightly crazing throughout along with a very small ding at the edge of the right side and some other minor handling marks. The wedge is un-numbered but the remaining serialized parts are matching and the action functions crisply with solid timing and lock-up. A lovely rather late-production 1849 Pocket.
