Fine American Percussion Pistol by A. Peterman of Philadelphia

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 601)

.50 caliber, 9" octagon barrel with a bright excellent smooth bore. This pistol is of extremely high quality and remains in very fine condition. The top of the barrel is marked "A. PETERMAN 131 WALNUT ST. PHILADA" and the patent breech shows a fancy bolster. The lock is engraved with a fine wavy line border and beautiful relief scroll along with maker name "A. PETERMAN". The hammer is beautifully formed with a handsome tall and forward leaning spur. Abraham Peterman was located next door to the famous Krider shop and he was active during the second half of the 19th century. The condition of the pistol is excellent with the barrel retaining a good deal of original brown finish with the surfaces remaining smooth and with lots of Damascus pattern visible. The patent breech and tang show lots of faded original color case hardening and are beautifully engraved in relief scroll. The lock and hammer are a beautiful mix of mottled color case hardening and a smooth gray patina. The walnut stock has a typical Philadelphia form and rates excellent with crisp checkering on grip, nice clean edges and perhaps 90% original finish with just a few light handling marks from the years. The finger spur triggerguard houses a set trigger and terminates in a pineapple finial. The triggerguard is mostly a smooth brown patina with loss due to flaking and with some original blue visible in areas. The wedge escutcheons are of iron and show light border engraving. The pistol is sighted with a small iron blade front and v-notch rear which is neatly mounted within the tang. A finely made 19th century Philadelphia percussion pistol in a fine state of preservation. (1C9670-179) {ANTIQUE} [David & Lore Squier Collection](2000/3000)

Fine British Flintlock Officer's Pistol by Richards

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 601)

.58 caliber, 9" part round part octagon pin fastened barrel with a near very good bore. This is a fine, high condition British pistol. The lock is engraved "Richards" ahead of cock with recessed rear section with pronounced teat. The lock features a gooseneck cock and a roller frizzen. The brass mounted stock shows a lightly engraved butt with long lobes, a large, lightly engraved flat sideplate and the triggerguard terminates in an acorn shaped finial at the front. Based upon the lock shape, roller frizzen and other architecture, we are dating this pistol to the first half of the 19th century. The barrel shows Birmingham proofs and has a stylish transition to round with chamfered edges of octagonal section to a wedding band and then to round. The condition is wonderful with the barrel retaining a pleasing mix of original brown finish and patina and remains quite smooth with little if any pitting present. The lock shows a light, even gray brown patina with crisp marking and again the metal remains smooth. The walnut stock rates excellent with 90% plus original finish, clean edges and just the normal light handling marks from the years. The brass furniture all shows a mellow undisturbed patina. The horn tipped ramrod appears to be of hickory and is at least period and could be original. This is a very fine British flintlock officer's pistol. (1B9833-58) {ANTIQUE} (2000/3000)

Fabulous Deluxe Percussion Halfstock Sporting Rifle by D.H. Hilliard of Cornish, New Hampshire

Lot # 5 (Sale Order: 5 of 601)

.38 caliber, 29" octagon barrel turned at muzzle for starter and with a bright excellent bore. This is a lovely Hilliard rifle, perhaps the finest we have ever offered. When one hears the name Hilliard, likely the image that comes to mind is of an underhammer rifle of which he made many. He also made traditional rifles with back action and front action locks. This example features a back action lock and is German silver mounted and engraved. The top left flat of the barrel is marked "D.H. HILLIARD / CORNISH, / N.H.", "CAST-STEEL" and is serial numbered "1609". The bottom flat under stock is marked "62 G.H. NUTT 2" and on left bottom flat just ahead of breech "ALLEN THURBER & CO / CAST-STEEL". The lock shows simple scroll with shaded background along with a simple an endearing border pattern. The top of the barrel shows light scroll ahead of rear barrel sight and the top surface of the long tang sight is engraved with large loose scroll which is reminiscent of the loose scroll engraving found on Dutton rifles which were made in Jaffrey, NH. The fancy round German silver patchbox is engraved as is the finger spur triggerguard, sideplate, buttplate, toeplate and wedge escutcheons. The forend tip is of pewter and it is also engraved. The barrel breech shows light engraving, as does the tang, and the outer surface of the bolster shows light scroll. All engraving is clean and somewhat folky and endearing and is what we would expect to see on a 19th century New Hampshire made gun. The rifle is equipped with double set triggers which function properly however the hammer does not quite hold on full cock. The condition of the rifle is excellent with the barrel retaining 75% evenly thinning original blue finish overall. The lock shows lots of original color case-hardened finish which has softened slightly but has a nice appearance. All iron surfaces remain smooth and free of pitting. The stock is of very nicely figured American black walnut and features a lovely shadowline cheekpiece with plain oval German silver monogram plate at center. The stock rates excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with just normal light handling marks most prevalent on the left side. The rifle is sighted with a globe front, open sporting rear with elevator and a long cantilevered tang sight with sliding elevator which engages hand cut adjustment grooves filed across the tang. A simple hickory ramrod is present beneath barrel. All furniture fits beautifully, the cheekpiece inlay being the exception as it is lifting slightly. This rifle is illustrated in Ned Robert's famous work The Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle on page 152. This is an extremely fine Hilliard rifle, certainly among the finest remaining examples of his work. (1E9670-114) {ANTIQUE} [David & Lore Squier Collection] (3500/5500)

Lovely Diminutive New York Mule Ear Percussion Boys Rifle by Medbery

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 601)

32 cal., 22'' round barrel with Rigby flats and a bright excellent bore. This is an exceptionally lovely and very simple boys or ladies rifle and appears to have seen very little, very careful use over the years. The barrel retains perhaps 93% original browning, the loss is due to some even fading and light wear from the years. It shows a simple diminutive silver blade front sight with a shallow v-notch rear, showing strong trace pale fire blue, with ''J Medbery/Rochester'' on the top flat rib. The tang shows some excellent quality etched foliate ''engraving'' and is a dull pewter gray patina. Lockplate shows the very lightest engraving with a beveled edge showing a diminutive border, the ear of the hammer showing open wide scroll with some geometric decoration. The hammer shows some strong remnant fire blue with some colors on the lock, especially where the hammer covers that portion of the plate. There is a simple pewter nosecap and a very lightly engraved tailpipe with the wide bow triggerguard having a pineapple finial front extension, which is engraved with some wide open scroll on the bow of the guard and the rearward grip flourish. There is a thin diminutive steel buttplate with very light engraving on the tang, it gives a length of pull to the brass trigger of 13''. The American walnut buttstock rates excellent with much original varnish, crisp wraparound checkering patterns with mullered borders, showing only light handling marks or scratches from the years. There is a clipped-corner rectangular monogram plate atop the wrist which is un-engraved and a very nice little silver star-shaped inlay on the left side of stock where the cheek would sit. The arm seems to function well mechanically and the ramrod is a later antique replacement without ferrules. There is a tiny amount of pitting in the cap splash area around the nipple, but overall the rifle appears to have seen very little use and was very well cared-for. Joseph Medbery was granted a patent for a mule ear lock in 1826 and was active in Rochester circa 1826-1840, when he sold out to William Billinghurst circa 1841, his other business ventures taking precedence over his gun shop, he would become fairly wealthy and influential in the Rochester area. This very rifle is pictured on pages 1116-7 of The New York State Firearms Trade book series, volume 3 © Rowe. The overall length of this lovely little New York State rifle is 36 3/8'' tipping the scales at just a tad over 3 1/2 pounds. (39670-455) {ANTIQUE} [David & Lore Squier Collection] (1800/2200)

The lid is similar showing perhaps a bit more scuffing and wear along the sharp edges, but with a lovely and label printed in black ink on buff colored paper, along with a bit of antique ink pen in-writing along its left edge. The interior has the factory ''Instructions for No. 6 Remington Rifle'' label on the interior of the lid, it is mostly present with an about 3'' piece missing from the lower left corner. The underside of the box shows a pencil marking which appears to be ''gap/3.25'', no doubt the price of the rifle at some point in its history. A beautiful investment-grade No. 6 falling block which appears to have seen very little or virtually no use since leaving Ilion. (3C9670-67) {C&R} [David & Lore Squier Collection] (1200/1800)
serial #457160, 32 RF, 20'' round barrel with a bright excellent, perhaps even unfired, bore. This lovely rifle comes in its original factory box, with end label which ma...moretches the configuration precisely. The barrel retains about 97-98% original blue, the loss due primarily to some even fading but with extremely light muzzle wear and bit of wear near the breech end. The frame retains 98-99% original vivid color case-hardening, as-does the pivoting breech block. The hammer shows darkening color case-hardening while the trigger shows all its original gray-blue. Remington Rolling Block No. 1 Sporting Rifle

Lot # 11 (Sale Order: 11 of 601)

serial #5822, 40-70, 32" octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a standard rifle with a 32" barrel, they were cataloged up to 34" but the shorter barrels made up the majority of the sporting rifle production. The top of the barrel is marked with the "E. REMINGTON & SONS" address and the bottom is marked "40 70" just ahead of forend. This is a medium weight barrel which is the same size as the octagonal action. The barrel retains 97% deep, rich original blue finish overall. The action shows 97% brilliant original color case-hardened finish with clean screw slots and very crisp patent markings. The breechblock and hammer retain 98% original blue while the buttplate and forend tip show strong original color case-hardening. The rifle has a standard single trigger and standard open sporting sights. The plain walnut buttstock and forend rate excellent with over 90% original finish remaining, nice raised grain feel and very few handling marks. The right side of the butt shows some minor areas of discoloration near the buttplate. These are not obtrusive and not a detractor from the otherwise very minty nature of this rifle. A crisp No. 1 Sporting rifle that would be difficult to upgrade from. (1C9670-88) {ANTIQUE} [David & Lore Squier Collection] (4000/6000)

Extremely Fine Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Rifle in Rare 50 Express

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 15 of 601)

serial #76176, 50 EX, 30" round No. 3 weight barrel with a bright excellent bore. In addition to being in a large, rare and desirable chambering, this rifle remains in lovely original condition. The barrel retains about 97% original blue finish overall with loss due to a little even thinning and there is one small area of loss where metal has turned to a smooth brown. The action retains 98% brilliant original color case-hardened finish, as do breechblock, hammer and lever. The plain walnut buttstock and forend are excellent plus with 98% original finish and nice raised grain feel. The stocks fit perfectly and show just light normal handling marks from the years. The original crescent buttplate shows 95% original color case-hardened finish which is just slightly faded but all there. Perhaps it was the combination of this steel crescent buttplate and the large caliber that caused this rifle to see so little use. The rifle is sighted with an ivory bead sporting front, express rear and folding mid-range Vernier tang. The factory records indicate the rifle left the factory as a rifle, 50 Express, round No. 3 weight 30" barrel, plain trigger, mid-range and windgauge (now ivory bead sporting) front. The rifle was received in the warehouse on October 19, 1896 and shipped the following day. A crisp and rare High Wall to fill that hole in your Winchester collection. Winchester Model 1885 Thick Side High Wall Special Single Shot Rifle

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 16 of 601)

Description Update 11/17/2020: Small thin crack left tip forend, a few more minor along buttstock

serial #68144, 32-40, 30" No. 5 weight part round part octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The rifle shows assembly code on left side of tang "1593 XXX SBC", the top tang inlet of stock is stamped "1593" as is the inside toe of the original Swiss buttplate. The factory records indicate that this rifle left the factory with a 30" No. 3 weight barrel in 38-55. The balance of the entry is correct with a single set trigger, checkered stock with pistolgrip, windgauge (now globe) and mid-range sights with no rear seat and a Swiss cheekpiece. The rifle shipped on July 18th 1894 and was returned and repaired on March 8, 1902 on order #131960. The barrel shows no mail order proof and neither the barrel nor action show a Winchester proof which is exactly how this rifle would be if it was factory re-barreled in March of 1902. The condition of the barrel and forend match the balance of the rifle perfectly and we feel very confident the rifle has been in this configuration since 1902. The barrel retains about 85% original blue finish with loss due to thinning and with the high edges silvering. The thick side action shows 90% plus original color case-hardened finish which has faded but shows subtle colors overall. The original single set trigger functions properly. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of highly figured American black walnut and rate excellent with 95% original finish showing strong checkering and scattered light handling marks. The buttstock has had weight added under the buttplate, no doubt by Winchester when they replaced the barrel and had to balance the rifle with this heavier barrel. The rifle features a globe target front, no rear seat and tang mounted Vernier peepsight. Special single shots are among the most handsome rifles produced by Winchester and this one is no exception. A beautiful heavy target High Wall rifle that should perform well at the range while maintaining its value as a collectible antique Winchester rifle. Sharps Borchardt Model 1878 Military Rifle

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 601)

serial #481, 45-70, 32" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This rifle remains in a very nice state of preservation and is in standard configuration. The barrel retains about 97% original blue finish overall with the barrel markings remaining clear and legible. The action retains about 93 - 95% original blue overall showing some striations which are a smooth brown and with some high edge wear. The frame screws show differing degrees of slot wear/damage and several holes show light scarring around their periphery. The lever and breechblock show a good deal of original color case-hardened finish which has softened slightly. The walnut buttstock and full length forend rate excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with nice honest raised grain. While these military type Borchardt rifles were produced in the largest numbers, they were also shipped abroad, converted and otherwise used hard, making examples as nice as this, quite scarce. Winchester Model 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 18 (Sale Order: 18 of 601)

serial #420858, 25-35 WCF, 20'' barrel with a near excellent bore showing very minor frosting, almost not worth a mention. The barrel and tube of this 1908-manufactured carbine retain perhaps 97-98% original blue with some faint thinning at the breech and some other tiny blemishes, the bands show the typical wear to dull silver from the years. The action retains near 95% original blue with thinning to gunmetal along the edges and high points with faint freckles, the blue remains very strong on the flats and along the top tang. There are the expected light blemishes and a tiny rub from the ring, and the lever and buttplate have toned to dull silver, but there are copious amounts of strong blue found throughout; we should all look this good at 112 years old. The smooth walnut buttstock and forend are very good as lightly-cleaned with the typical signs of handling, they are both structurally-sound with a nice tight fit, and wood still proud of the metal along the bottom tang and receiver. The carbine is equipped with a graduated ladder rear sight and a blade with bead front sight. A great old small bore Winchester with tons of original metal finish and a perfectly serviceable bore. Winchester Model 1895 Special Order Short Rifle

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 19 of 601)

serial #26603, 30 U.S., 22" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This rifle features a special order shorter-than-standard barrel along with a smooth steel shotgun buttplate. This rifle is in very nice condition with the barrel retaining about 95% original blue finish with just a little light muzzle wear. The action retains about 97% original blue with just high edge wear and on the right side the top part of action shows some very light vertical marks in the finish. This may have been from oxidation forming in a case and leaving this pattern behind; this is not a major detraction from this lovely rifle. The box magazine retains about 95% original finish with loss due to friction from working the action. The plain walnut stocks rate excellent retaining about 95% original finish overall with a little dark staining along the steel buttplate. The smooth steel shotgun buttplate shows a mix of gray brown patina with some original blue visible. The rifle is sighted with a Lyman beaded blade front, blank in rear seat and a Lyman 21 receiver sight is present. Factory records confirm the configuration of the rifle showing it as: Rifle, 30 caliber, 22" barrel, Lyman front and flattop rear, shotgun butt, received in the warehouse on May 28, 1900, it was removed from the warehouse at some point as it lists "Back in warehouse June 26, 1900" and shipped that same day. serial #70501, 45-70, 26" octagon barrel with full magazine and an excellent bore. This rifle features perhaps the most brilliant original color case-hardened action that we have ever sold. The rifle is marked with assembly code on side of tang "445 XX" with matching "405" in top tang inlet of stock and on inside toe of buttplate. The barrel retains about 95% original blue finish overall with some patches of old light oxidation staining and with a nickel size patch of moderate pitting near the magazine hanger with a couple other scattered patches as well. The magazine tube is a medium brown also showing patches of oxidation and pitting. The condition of the balance of the rifle is truly spectacular. The action shows 98% brilliant original color case-hardened finish with just a little fading on the belly, the sides are extremely rich. The bolt retains 95% original finish with one area of loss which also has a patch of light pitting, the loading gate retains 99% original blue. The hammer and lever show strong original color case-hardening. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend show beautiful figure and retain 95% original finish with sharp, clean checkering. The toeline of the stock is equipped with a factory sling base, oddly there is no corresponding forward stud or evidence where one ever was. The steel crescent buttplate shows nice faded color overall. The rifle is equipped with its original sporting sights. Factory records list the gun as a Rifle, 45/70, octagon, plain trigger, checkered stock, sling and swivels. The gun was received in the warehouse on October 21, 1892 and shipped the next day. .54 caliber, 9 1/16" barrel with a very good bore. This pistol shows the early style lock markings with larger die stamps and the "CON" abbreviation for Connecticut. The lower left part of the lock marking is light but the balance of the markings including the eagle, are very nicely struck. The barrel shows proper "P / US" marking along with the inspector's initial "J" to the right of the tang near the pan. This is a high condition martial pistol. The barrel, backstrap, triggerguard, sideplate and barrel band all show 75% original brown finish which is thinning evenly and remains smooth and with just a lovely appearance. The lock is a rich deep brown patina and again is very smooth with nice markings and edges. The walnut stock remains in very nice condition with a good deal of original finish with perhaps some added light oil at some point. The edges remain well-defined and the stock flat shows "V" as well as an unbordered cartouche with the last initial being a large "N". The pistol is in original flint and shows just a little very light pitting at touchhole. A tapered plain hickory ramrod is present. This is an extremely fine example of these pistols which were produced between 1817 and 1820. A super 1816 pistol that has survived 200 years in this wonderful state of preservation. The walnut stock rates very good with well-defined edges and just the normal light handling marks one would expect to see on a 200 year old military pistol. There are no visible inspector's marks in the wood however the surface of the stock appears original. The gun remains in its unaltered flintlock form with all lock components being original and the touchhole undisturbed. A fine example of these handsome martial pistols made by the patriarch of U.S. pistol makers. (1B9833-56) {ANTIQUE} (2000/3000)

U.S. Model 1819 Flintlock Pistol by Simeon North

Lot # 23 (Sale Order: 23 of 601)

.54 caliber, 10" barrel with an oxidized bore. The barrel is marked "D / P / US" at breech and shows a casting pit on the top of the barrel in the breech area. The lock is properly marked and dated 1822 to rear of cock. The lock markings remain very crisp while the barrel marks are slightly softened. All lock components are original, the touchhole and bore are undisturbed and this pistol is in its original flintlock configuration. The barrel shows a rich brown patina overall with a little scattered light salt & pepper pitting. The lock remains mostly smooth with light pitting on top surfaces in the area of the touchhole and shows a pleasing even brown patina overall. The walnut stock rates about very good with well-defined edges and strong outline of the original inspector's cartouche. There are some small grain cracks mostly in the typical places from the rear lock screw to breech, and a small one on the left side of the tang. These are sound, never repaired and very minor in nature. The stock was lightly refinished long ago and shows honest wear and light flash erosion to rear of pan. The iron furniture all shows a lovely even brown patina. The sliding bolt on rear of lock functions properly and the captive swivel ramrod is present. This is a very nice example of these handsome U.S. martial pistols made by this prolific maker who held government contracts for over 50 years and was the first contractor to produce pistols with entirely interchangeable parts. Wonderful Silver and Gold Mounted New York Percussion Sporting Rifle by Medbery of Rochester

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 25 of 601)

38 caliber, 30" round barrel with graceful raised flats at breech and a bright excellent bore. This rifle is beautifully engraved on lock with scroll, sunbursts and nice border work. The barrel breech and tang show this same lovely engraving and the top flat section of the barrel is engraved in fancy script "J. Medbery Rochester". The three raised ribs on the barrel are on the top and sides, the top flat extends to the end of the forend and has fancy scroll engraving at the termination point, the side flat extends half this distance. The rifle has silver furniture which is all nicely engraved including the triggerguard, buttplate, toeplate, and even the sides of the forend cap are engraved with sunbursts. The triggerguard terminates in a fancy pineapple finial to the front, the toeplate with a very similar motif. In addition to the silver mounts, there are some gold accents as well. The stock flat opposite the lock shows a round gold inlay which is engraved with opposing interlocked triangles with a flower blossom at the center. The wedge escutcheons are also of gold as are a pair of six pointed stars which appear on the left and right cheek rests and a small wrist plate. The lock is affixed by a single screw through the lock and into the breech plug. The hammer is broken with the top half missing, this likely accounting for the superb condition of the rifle. The barrel retains about 90% original brown finish overall with subtle damascus pattern visible its entire length. There are a couple patches of light oxidation and pitting near the muzzle and a little scattered light oxidation staining. The lock, breech and tang show nearly all of their original color case-hardened finish which has mottled slightly over time but has a lovely appearance. The stock is of highly figured American black walnut and is made with both left and right handed cheekpieces each with the previously mentioned gold star inlay. The wrist is finely checkered and the toeline of stock is stamped "A.C. BURSIEL" neatly with a one-piece stamp. The condition of the stock is excellent with 97% original finish remaining and with sharp edges, crisp checkering and perfect fit. The rifle is sighted with a simple stud front, open rear and small folding tang mounted windage adjustable peepsight. The top ramrod thimble is missing however, the lower thimble is present, so a talented gunsmith could fashion an exact replacement quite easily. This rifle is illustrated and discussed in Swinney & Rowe's The New York State Firearms Trade on page 1115, the book states that Bursiel was an "old-time mayor of Rochester" although we have been unable to confirm that. The rifle is outstanding, clearly Medbery put a lot of effort and pride into building it. A top shelf New York made percussion rifle.
