Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Sporting Rifle

Lot # 176 (Sale Order: 176 of 673)

serial #82302, 32-40, 30” No. 3 weight octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore that has been neatly relined. The metal surfaces of this 1898-made rifle retain about 95% older nice quality reapplied rust blue showing some scattered thin areas of silvering and light handling marks, the finish taking on a deep plum tone under bright light. The “32-40” marking atop the barrel has been reapplied post-relining but the barrel otherwise appears to be a proper original factory barrel showing the expected markings (and 32-40 designation) on the underside beneath the forend. The hammer and breechblock show some smoky remnants of case-hardened colors, the crescent steel buttplate also with some good colors mixing with silvery case-hardened patina. The smooth walnut stock and schnabel forend with ebony tip insert remain in very fine condition as lightly cleaned and refinished showing some scattered light dings and a small filler repair on the right side of the forend. The rifle is sighted with a fine quality more modern production Vernier mid-range tang sight with aperture disc, sporting rear sight and target globe front with aperture crosshair insert that is rather loose in the dovetail. A rather nicely restored 1885 with a quality relined bore. (13A11506-2) {ANTIQUE} (1500/2000)

Stevens Ideal No. 49 Late Walnut Hill Target Rifle

Lot # 177 (Sale Order: 177 of 673)

serial #3C1, 22 LR, 28” round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This No. 44 action rifle is in an interesting late production configuration, equipped with a factory Stevens “WALNUT HILL”-marked barrel but with the other features more in line with the No. 414 Armory model particularly in the stock configuration. The barrel retains about 90% original blue with a few scattered light pits and small areas of oxidation. The action retains about 80% original cyanide case-hardened colors fading and toning to a medium gray-brown patina while the breechblock retains a healthy amount of original bright blue. The smooth pistolgrip walnut buttstock and wide long forend remain in very fine condition showing some scattered light dings and handling marks, the buttstock with a few areas a little shy where it meets the action. Stocks feature heavy checkered steel buttplate, sling swivels, forend rail for mounting palm rest (not present) and a very nice added left-side walnut cheekpiece. There are four drilled and tapped holes with filler screws on the left side of the action and the rifle is fitted with a pair of target blocks that support vintage aluminum rings holding an R.A. Litschert Model C 6X riflescope. The scope retains about 92% original blue showing some areas of mild thinning and light handling marks with crosshair reticle and cloudy optics showing moderate occlusions that will require a professional servicing. There is a crack through the right side of the forward scope ring and a target globe front sight with aperture post insert is fitted into the front dovetail. The action has also been modified with an overtravel stop and shorter hammer throw and otherwise seems to function normally. An interesting Stevens in an attractive configuration. Fine U.S. Model 1812 Flintlock Musket by Springfield Armory with Pennsylvania Marking

Lot # 180 (Sale Order: 180 of 673)

Description Update 05/30/2024: There is a very well executed repair to a crack around the wrist
.69 cal., 41 1/2” barrel with a lightly-oxidized bore. The metal surfaces of this attractive original flint Type II musket are toning to a silvery gunmetal patina with light-moderate pitting around the touchhole and softened pinprick-light pitting overall. The lockplate and breech markings are crisp with the rear of the lockplate dated 1816 while “US / (Federal Eagle) / SPRINGFIELD” is ahead of the cock. The top of the breech shows a clear “PA / 11” along with “US” and the familiar “P / (Eagle Head) / V” is on the left side of the breech. The buttplate tang is also dated “1816.” The inside of the lockplate bears inspector initials “BH” and all the components of the lock are marked “C.” The walnut stock rates fine with two thin smoothed over slivers above the lockplate, and the expected scattered dings and minor handling marks. The left side of the comb features the characteristic shallow cheekpiece, and there are softened inspection marks on the left stock flat and toe line. The brass front sight blade, button-head ramrod, and stud-type barrel band retainers are intact, and the lock is very robust and crisp. A wonderful example of a Model 1812 Musket, this one clearly having served the Keystone State. (23B11567-1) {ANTIQUE} (2000/2500)

The smooth walnut straight grip buttstock rates very fine with a coat of added finish, a series of light chatter marks on the left, and other expected dings and light handling marks from the years. The barrel is sighted with a low German silver blade front, simple v-notch rear retaining generous remnants of original blue, and an elevated graduating peep rear showing a small bend. The action is strong and crisp and the barrel locks up tightly. A fine example of these collectable Maynard rifles. (23B11483-10) {ANTIQUE} (1500/2000)
serial #23900, 22 RF, 24” part round part octagon barrel with a bright fine bore. The barrel retains about 65-70% original thinning blue toning to a blue gray patina with...more some scattered light handling marks and some scattered speckles of light oxidation. The Swiss style buttplate retains about 95% original nickel finish with small areas of wear on the toe and heel exposing the brass beneath. The balance of metal surfaces retain about 40-50% original case-hardened finish mixed with smoky gray patina and fine brown speckling. The sides of the frame and protected areas retain a generous amount of attractive case-hardened colors. The “1873” on the left side of the frame is very crisp and the patent dates are clear and legible. The Mass Arms Co. markings on the right side are also sharp. Winchester Pre ’64 Model 70 Bolt Action Rifle

Lot # 189 (Sale Order: 189 of 673)

serial #116066, 250-3000 Sav, 23 3/4” barrel with a bright very good plus bore with scattered pinprick pits easily missed at first glance, still showing strong rifling throughout. The barrel appears to have been neatly set back by about 1/4”, perhaps as a result of correcting headspace, the only initial clue being the edge of the Winchester “WP” proof peeking out from beneath the receiver. The metal surfaces of this 1949-made rifle retain about 95% original blue with light wear on high edges and contact points, light silvering at the muzzle, light clamp marks around the breech, and some scattered light handling marks and specks of old oxidation. The bolt remains mostly bright with some light operational wear and speckled gray freckling, the shroud and extractor retaining strong blue, and the bolt handle toning to gray. The checkered pistolgrip walnut stock is in excellent condition as lightly refinished with a light handling mark or two, and the checkered steel widow’s peak buttplate is proud at the toe; sling swivels are present on the forend and toeline. The receiver and barrel markings are intact and crisp, the underside of the barrel showing the correct “250 SAV” caliber marking, “49” date, and index mark now butted up against the receiver, and the bolt is lightly numbered to the rifle. The rifle is sighted with a ramped bead front sight with hood, the bead bent towards the left, and a buckhorn sporting-style rear sight, and the receiver is factory drilled and tapped for optics and receiver sight mounting. A solid example from the last year of 250 Savage production, with an apparent curious history. (14B11464-30) {C&R} (2000/3000)

Rare 1934 Swiss Commercial Mauser Banner Luger Pistol

Lot # 197 (Sale Order: 197 of 673)

serial #3721v, 30 Luger, 4 3/4” barrel with a bright near excellent bore showing a little minor frosting and strong rifling throughout. This is a peculiar example of a very rare low-production contract that has been very professionally refinished, perhaps in Switzerland, and most of the major components renumbered in font quite close to factory style, but not exactly correct. This renumbering includes the barrel (which also has lost its “v” suffix), receiver and seemingly the frame though the suffix on the frame looks correct. The remaining small parts appear to be a mix of re-stamped and original “21” markings. This short frame pistol shows small Mauser banner logo on the toggle and “(Eagle) / N” proofs on the left side receiver, left side breechblock and front sight base stamped upside down. The metal surfaces retain about 97% older reapplied rust blue finish showing some very slight high edge wear and some scattered pinprick pitting beneath the finish. The small parts show very nice restored straw color and fire blue finishes and the markings are strong with Swiss cross in starburst atop the chamber. The checkered walnut grips remain in very fine to near excellent condition showing a few lightly chipped points and retaining very nice fit. The right panel is un-numbered and the left panel is pencil-numbered “493”. The grooved firing pin is matching numbered “21” and the remaining serialized parts are matching as renumbered and described above. One un-numbered bright-bodied aluminum base magazine is included. This serial number is listed on Table 25.05 in “The Mauser Parabellum 1930-1946” by Hallock and van de Kant. This is a somewhat mysterious example, perhaps refurbished in Switzerland or on these shores. (13C11440-1) {C&R} (2000/3000)

German P.08 Luger 1921 Weimar Pistol by DWM

Lot # 198 (Sale Order: 198 of 673)

serial #4715a, 9mm, 4” barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a rather scarce variant as a 1921 production Weimar pistol still not equipped with any police hardware and retaining a matching magazine. The metal surfaces retain about 90-92% original blue with some thinning to gray-brown patina along the gripstraps and high edges, a few small spots of old light pitting and some minor dings that are mostly around the takedown lever. The small parts retain fading straw color, the sear spring retains brilliant fire blue and all markings remain intact and mostly strong, the proper “Weimar dove” Waffenamts on the right side of the receiver rather soft as is often seen. The checkered beech grips remain in very good plus condition showing some light dings and honest wear to the checkering. The remaining serialized parts are matching including the un-grooved firing pin. The pistol includes one bright-bodied wood base magazine correctly stamp-numbered matching the pistol on the base, the base showing one thin drying crack forming. A nice example and interesting variant for the Luger collector. (13B11591-34) {C&R} (1200/1800)

The Model 23 Golden Quail was offered between 1984 and 1987, each year producing only 500 of one caliber; 20 ga was offered in 1984. The shotgun locks up tight and on-face with the lever coming to rest just right of center and features a single selective trigger, automatic safety, mechanical triggers, ejectors, and is sighted with a Bradley-style white bead. The factory barrel markings are intact crisp, both barrels and forend numbered “405”, and the matted rib reads “Golden Quail”. The shotgun locks up tight and on-face with the lever coming to rest just right of center and features a single selective trigger, automatic safety, mechanical triggers, ejectors, and is sighted with a Bradley-style white bead. The shotgun may require mechanical attention as the ejectors appear to trip weakly, before robustly ejecting the snapcap. Included is a luggage-style case in very good plus condition with a few minor wear and handling marks, featuring a tan fabric interior with “Golden Quail / by WINCHESTER” label, and a pair of keys. A fine smallbore double for the Winchester enthusiast. (14B11508-95) {MODERN} [N.R.A. Firearms For Freedom] (2500/4000)
