Winchester Model 21 Deluxe Double Ejectorgun Identified to Bandleader & Television Host Happy Felton
Lot # 30 (Sale Order: 30 of 673)
serial #25908, 12 ga (2 3/4”), 28” barrels marked and choked modified and full with bright excellent bores showing a little stubborn fouling. The barrels of this handsome shotgun retain about 96% original blue showing some scattered light handling marks and silvering at the edges of breeches and muzzles. The action retains about 90-92% original bright blue with some edge wear and most of the loss due to flaking to a mild gray-brown patina along the bottom metal. The checkered pistolgrip deluxe walnut buttstock and beavertail forend remain in very fine condition as lightly refinished long ago showing two tiny cracks forming at the upper tang, scattered light dings and mild checkering wear. Both forend and buttstock exhibit some lovely grain figure throughout, particularly fine along the left side of the buttstock. The silver monogram plate along the toe line is neatly engraved with a small starburst in the center and foliate flourish flanked by “HAPPY FELTON” which appears to be period applied in every respect. The factory solid red rubber pad is intact in very fine condition providing a 14” length-of-pull with drops of 1 3/4” and 2 1/2” and the stock appears to be cast-off very slightly. The shotgun features small ivory mid-bead with silver bead front, automatic safety, and factory single selective trigger, and the barrels lock up solid on-face with top lever resting about center. The ejectors are robust and in-time. Francis J. “Happy” Felton (1907-1964) started his career in vaudeville before becoming a bandleader in the late 1930s-early 1940s. Perhaps his most notable endeavor was as host of “Happy Felton’s Knothole Gang” which debuted on April 21, 1950. In cooperation with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Felton would host three lucky youths who would receive baseball equipment for the day and be evaluated by Dodgers players. This is a very attractive and desirable Model 21 connected to a colorful individual. (13F11518-37) {C&R} (4000/6000)

Lot # 32 (Sale Order: 32 of 673)
Attractive Winchester Model 1903 Semi-Auto Rifle with Period Malcolm Riflescope
Lot # 33 (Sale Order: 33 of 673)
serial #46905, 22 Winchester Auto, 20” barrel with a bright fine bore showing a shallow ring about an inch back from the muzzle and otherwise crisp rifling. The barrel of this 1910-made rifle retains about 95% original blue showing some scattered spots of silvering from light handling marks and minor thinning while the action retains about 85% original bright blue showing some scattered minor flaking, a few small dings and the bottom metal toning to a smooth gray patina. The nosecap and buttplate retain some generous bright blue and the bolt shows lovely brilliant fire blue. This rifle is equipped with some wonderful period hardware including a William Malcolm riflescope serial #3753 complete with fine windage and elevation adjustable mounts, along with a Lyman No. 45 receiver sight and Marble’s 2S ivory bead front sight; the rear dovetail has a Marble’s blank. The scope and its mounts retain about 95% original blue showing some mild edge wear and one tiny ding along the body. The scope is probably 4X or so and the optics are somewhat dirty and strangely the reticle has been lost to the years but the original screw-in covers are present. The smooth walnut stocks remain in very fine condition with nice raised grain and oil finish showing a thin 1” crack behind the upper tang and some minor handling marks. This is a very handsomely appointed Winchester Model 1903. (13B11229-108) {C&R} (1200/1800)
Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Winder Musket Pictured on Cover of the American Rifleman
Lot # 34 (Sale Order: 34 of 673)
Description update 5/29/2024: The original rear iron sight hardware has been removed and the two screw holes currently have filler screws. serial #113163, 22 LR, 28” barrel with a bright excellent bore. This scarce takedown Winder musket graces the cover of the August 1975 issue of The American Rifleman magazine. A copy of the magazine is included along with a signed letter from the former owner and photographer of the rifle, Bill Harwell, attesting to its authenticity. Also included is a copy of the letter from the Senior Associate Editor of The American Rifleman, H.C. Stith, to Harwell dated February 14, 1974 offering to purchase a transparency of the photograph and a copy of the check for the agreed upon sum of $100. The metal surfaces retain about 97% original blue with a few tiny spots of fine flaking to pleasant gray patina on the frame, a bit of wear on the toe and heel of the buttplate, and a few light handling marks. The lever and breechblock retain a similar amount of original case-hardened finish with a touch of light drifting to pewter gray patina on the end of the lever. The barrel and frame markings including the Winchester proofs are crisp. The smooth walnut stocks rate excellent with perhaps a light handling mark or two. The rifle is sighted with a Lyman globe front sight with aperture and post insert and a Lyman tang sight with aperture disc as depicted on the magazine cover. A wonderful, high-condition takedown Winder Musket with documents for the Winchester collector. (23B11229-189) {C&R} (1500/2000)

Rare A.H. Fox HE Grade Super-Fox Boxlock Double Ejectorgun
Lot # 38 (Sale Order: 38 of 673)
serial #28303, 12 ga (2 3/4”), 32” Chromox Fluid Steel barrels choked full with bright excellent bores, the left muzzle showing two tiny in-line dings on the outer edge, and some spots of light oxidation staining. The barrels retain about 97% original blue, appearing stronger under ambient light, with general light wear and thinning and some scattered minor handling marks. The case-hardened frame retains about 85% lovely case color with the edges of the fences, tip of the lever, and high edges of the frame toned to a silvery case-hardened patina, the protected areas around the fences, trigger, and lever showing vibrant color, and the sides and belly of the frame drifting to more subdued tones with some minor handling marks. The frame is lightly factory embellished similarly to the early A Grades, with light scroll bordering and small floral engraving around the pins, all of which remains crisp. The checkered round knob pistolgrip walnut stock and splinter-style forend are in near excellent condition with two tiny and easily missed quality filler-repairs, one at the forend tip and the other to the left of the triggerguard tang, an about 1/2” hairline crack at the rear of the upper tang, appearing as a grain line before close inspection, and a light linear handling mark on the left side of the butt. The stock is fit with a Hawkins ventilated recoil pad giving an about 13 3/8” length of pull with drops of 1 5/8” and 2 5/8”. The barrel markings are intact and clear, the barrel flats showing the infamous “BARRELS NOT GUARANTEED – SEE TAG”, the result of early marketing just a bit too boastful, and the barrels and forend are numbered to the gun. The shotgun locks up tight and on-face with the lever coming to rest just right of center and features a single selective trigger, an automatic safety, ejectors, is sighted with an aged white bead front (showing a small chip from one side) and small white bead mid rib, and weighs a significant 9 lbs 6 oz. Originally marketed with an 80% pattern guarantee, the Super Fox was the conclusion of careful experimentation by Burt Becker, who implemented chambers with very close tolerances, longer and more obliquely angled forcing cones, and over-bored barrels, all of which meant this gun could put more shot on target at longer range. The Super Fox is a desired piece for those who appreciate classic American shotguns, and this example stands out among them. (14E11472-17) {C&R} (7000/9000)
