German G.43 AC45-Coded Semi-Auto Rifle by Walther

Lot # 152 (Sale Order: 152 of 673)

serial #5030, 8mm, 22” barrel with a bright near excellent bore showing a little mild frosting and strong rifling throughout. The barrel of this ac-coded and 45-dated rifle retains about 95% original blue showing some mild silvering and handling marks, the blue taking on a slight plum tone under bright light as is typical. The stamped housing is also blued, retaining about 90% with moderate operational wear and the action and remaining parts retain about 94% original phosphate finish toning slightly to a mild brown patina in some areas. The bolt carrier shows the usual rough forging and what appears to be a large inverted forge code along the top flat. The smooth laminated hardwood pistolgrip stock remains in very fine condition as lightly cleaned showing a small hairline crack ahead of the magazine well, small crack at the toe and some other light handling marks. Any markings have been lost to the years, however there appears to be a very faded Waffenamt on the left side of the butt. The handguard shows a Durofol marking along the interior but appears to be a black plastic reproduction, or at the very best an original handguard that has seen scattered synthetic repairs and then painted black. The left side of the bolt carrier shows matching serial number “5030” stamped in rather larger than typical numbers, probably re-struck at some point as there is also no Waffenamt. The remaining numbered bolt parts are matching, the body stamp-numbered and showing proper “(Eagle) / 359” Waffenamt, the lugs and firing pin housing properly electro-penciled matching and the stamped housing shows “(Eagle) / WaAA44” Waffenamt. The cleaning rod and front sight hood appear to be original and the rifle includes one original aye-coded K43 magazine with “(Eagle) / WaAB43” Waffenamt and an original unmarked leather sling. A nice example of these desirable German semi-auto rifles for the martial collector, with the desirable “cosmetically machined” G.43-marked receiver recycled for use in the late war. (13C11591-15) {C&R} (3500/5000)

Scarce German K98k Bolt Action Rifle by Steyr

Lot # 153 (Sale Order: 153 of 673)

serial #1908f, 8mm Mauser, 24” barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this 1940-dated rifle retain about 97% original blue with scattered light oxidation, high edge wear, minor pinprick pitting, and areas toning to gray-brown patina including the barrel bands, front sight, and triggerguard; there are areas of noticeable scratches including both sides of the rear sight assembly, front sight, and top of the receiver ring with the extractor toned to a dark brown patina. The markings remain intact and crisp with a clear “660” code on the receiver ring, the top of the barrel shank subcontractor marked “109 40 BÖ”, and all appropriate parts marked “(Eagle) / 623” with three Waffenamts interestingly marked upside down on the right side of the barrel. All appropriate parts are correctly numbered to the rifle including the stock. The pistolgrip laminate stock remains in excellent condition with two small abrasions on the right side, the right side of the butt is marked with three Waffenamts including one displaying an “H” for German army issue, and the toe line is marked “1908 / f” with two Waffenamts. The matching metal buttplate shows a mix of light oxidation and pinprick pitting with the toe a bit proud of the stock. Included is an original “an” marked muzzle cover. A fine example of an early Steyr K98k rifle manufactured under the short-lived “660” code. (28B11504-2) {C&R} (2000/3000)

Lovely Seven Years’ War Havana Map Powder Horn

Lot # 158 (Sale Order: 158 of 673)

This is a very fine medium-sized horn measuring about 8” long commemorating the embarkation of the British troops from Havana at the end of the Seven Years’ War when the British restored Havana to Spanish control after the 11-month occupation in exchange for Florida. The horn exhibits a wonderful rich and honest patina throughout and showing some scattered light handling marks, minor hairline crack at the spout end and a few shallow chips along the edges of the bottom that are unobtrusive. The horn itself features the expected folky carving in near full coverage with an extensive map of the city and numbered legend for the various important buildings and sights as well as a harbor scene depicting the HMS Cambridge among other British ships. The horn is also marked “THE CITY OF HAVANA ILUMINATED / IMBARKATION OF THE BRITISH TROOPS JULY 12, 1763”. Interestingly, the scene labeled number “13” on the legend “Ships sunk in the harbor” has been deliberately removed, the area ground down slightly. The wooden bottom plug shows a few faded scribblings and a larger marking in black ink that appears to say “NEWHALL”, perhaps the name of the horn’s original owner. This is a wonderful powder horn, totally honest and in lovely condition, suitable for any fine antiques collection. (13D11489-3) (4000/6000)

This 1909-made rifle has been fitted with an original factory 218 Bee barrel, the “65” in the model marking having been removed and stamped over with a “92”. The barrel is toning to a deep gray-brown patina showing some areas of old oxidation and generous remnants of original blue. The action is similar with streaks of bright blue in the protected areas and the plain walnut stocks remain in about very good plus condition showing scattered light dings and a small nail hole behind the lower tang. There are sling swivel eyes fitted along the toe line and nosecap and the rifle is sighted with a non-factory but period sporting rear sight and silver bead on ramp front sight with hood. An interesting rifle that appears to have been well executed. (13A11464-62) {C&R} (1000/1500)

Weatherby FN Mauser Left-Hand Bolt Action Rifle

Lot # 170 (Sale Order: 170 of 673)

serial #485, 30-06, 24” chrome bore barrel with a bright near excellent bore showing crisp rifling. The metal surfaces of this early custom Weatherby Mauser rifle retain about 95% original high polish blue with most of the loss due to some areas of oxidation near the muzzle and left rear edges of the receiver. There are some areas discolored and toning to plum around the two rear bridge drilled and tapped holes and the bolt body and extractor remain polished bright, the body lightly electro-penciled matching the action. The checkered pistolgrip Monte Carlo stock with right-side cheekpiece and dark rosewood contrasts appears to be some kind of American hardwood, lightly colored with attractive straight grain, rather elm-like. The stock rates near excellent retaining almost all of its original gloss varnish showing just a few light handling marks and nice traditional checkering. Equipped with sling swivels and a Weatherby ventilated black rubber pad. There are no provisions for a rear iron sight though the action has two pairs of drilled and tapped holes and the front sight is a very generous blade on ramp. The action also features an adjustable Jaeger trigger. A fine early example of Roy Weatherby’s work. (13B9949-72) {C&R} [Dr. James D. Morgan Collection] (1500/2000)

Weatherby Mark V Left-Hand Bolt Action Rifle

Lot # 171 (Sale Order: 171 of 673)

serial #29955, 300 Weatherby Magnum, 25” barrel, including the custom muzzle brake, with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this West German era rifle have been refinished in a matte black enamel retaining about 97% showing a few light handling marks and a small area of tiny scratches on the right side of the muzzle brake. The bolt body ribs remain mostly bright and the floorplate shows a rather softened “Weatherby Custom” callout with light foliate motifs. The checkered pistolgrip walnut Monte Carlo stock with right-side cheekpiece and rosewood contrasts remains in about very good plus condition, the only major apology being the original high gloss varnish has taken on significant overall crackling. The skip-line checkering remains strong and the stock features pattern 10A inlays on either side below the action, sling swivel studs and factory ventilated red rubber pad. The bolt is matching the action and this rifle is still equipped with the earlier-style safety. The rifle is also fitted with a Kaps 2.5-10x56 riflescope serial #5166 in excellent external condition and featuring German No. 4 reticle. The optics are slightly discolored and show some speckled occlusions throughout the field of view; this is otherwise a fine quality German scope that would be worthy of a professional servicing. A very attractive and slightly customized ensemble. (13A9949-26) {C&R} [Dr. James D. Morgan Collection] (1500/2000)

Bavarian Percussion Double Rifle by Franz Baader

Lot # 172 (Sale Order: 172 of 673)

About .55 cal, 26” damascus barrels with bright very fine to near excellent bores showing a little frosting in the grooves and crisp rifling throughout. The barrels have mostly toned to a deep plum-brown patina showing a bit of moderate oxidation overall and good remnants of the damascus twist patterns throughout. The rib shows maker’s name inlaid in gold and some nice gold and silver foliate inlays at the breeches along with what appears to be a gold owl and crown over crossed sword and spear. The lockplates are a deep smoky gray patina and show light foliate scrollwork embellishments accented by gold, the right lock with a recumbent gold buck and the left with a doe. The upper tang also has a gold “1” and the tailpipe and triggerguard finial are embellished in similar form as the lockplates. The checkered walnut halfstock is in traditional Germanic form with attractive walnut triggerguard, generous left-side cheekpiece and checkered sliding patch box cover on the right. The stock features some nice foliate carving as well and remains in very good plus condition showing the expected overall light dings and a number of thin drying cracks scattered throughout the grain and some knots in the wood. The ramrod tip appears to be an old replacement and the original wide sling swivels are intact. The front trigger is a set which will require some mechanical attention while the rear has no set, there do not appear to be half-cocks but the hammers otherwise seem to hold properly. The rifle is sighted with a nice little flip-up tang peep sight, u-notch rear and small German silver blade front. Franz Xaver Baader was gunmaker to the Bavarian royal court from about 1837 to his death in 1864 and this remains a nice representative example of his work. (13C11407-1) {ANTIQUE} (1800/2200)

Remington Hepburn No. 3 Sporting Rifle

Lot # 174 (Sale Order: 174 of 673)

serial #6707, 38-50, 28 1/4” octagon barrel with a partially bright about very good bore showing some light pitting and oxidation in the grooves, a few thin scratches in the chamber, and otherwise strong rifling. The barrel has mostly toned to a deep plum-brown patina showing a little old oxidation and some light pitting. The barrel was perhaps shortened very slightly, but certainly very long ago, the front sight dovetail being a little further back than one would expect. The action retains generous silvery case-hardened patina throughout mixing with some areas of plum-brown with a few wisps of colors near the lever and the breechblock and hammer mostly toned to plum-brown showing a few flakes of bright blue. The checkered pistolgrip walnut buttstock and forend with steel schnabel remain in about very good condition showing honest wear from the years with a few hairline cracks at the upper tang, some mild abrasions and old dings. Strangely, the barrel and forend are both numbered “6706”, just one off from the action, buttstock and buttplate “6707”, and the caliber designation appears to have been restamped during the period of use over an older marking, appearing to have been done by the factory. The rifle is sighted with a proper mid or short-range tang sight, sporting rear and a Beach combination front. An interesting example of the classic Hepburn rifle. (13B11230-7) {ANTIQUE} (1800/2200)

Lot # 175 (Sale Order: 175 of 673)

serial #346, 12 ga (2 3/4”), 27 1/2” Krupp Laufstahl barrels choked modified in both with bright near excellent bores showing a little subtle frosting or stubborn fouling. The barrels of this October 1936 proof-dated shotgun retain about 95% original blue showing some subtle thinning or toning under bright light and a few small spots of wear on the left side. The action retains about 95% lovely vibrant case-hardened colors showing a little scattered fine oxidation speckling that is very minor and some drifting to silvery gray along the triggerguard and lower tang. The action is lightly and tastefully embellished with simple line borders and filigree scroll, the bottom of the action marked “ORIGINAL SIEGFRIED / MIT / EINABZUG TRIUMPF”. The checkered capped pistolgrip walnut buttstock, forend and side panels remain in very fine condition, the only real apology being a few areas a little shy where the buttstock meets the action and a thin 1” chip along the bottom edge of the right stock flat. The buttstock is fitted with a solid red rubber pad and black spacers providing a 14 1/8” length-of-pull with drops of 1 5/8” and 2 3/4”. The barrels are marked for 70mm shells and the shotgun is equipped with sling swivels, cocking indicator pins, non-automatic safety, single mechanical trigger and is sighted with a small celluloid mid-bead and medium brass bead front. The checkering remains strong, the left-side European cheekpiece is well-defined and the wood shows some lovely grain figure throughout. Barrels lock up solid on-face with top lever resting about center and the ejectors are robust and in-time. Weight is 6 lbs. 13 oz. An attractive pre-war over under. (13B11506-3) {C&R} (1500/2000)
