5 Progressive Letters From 1862 (Civil War) To Sara Loomis From Lt. Samuel Clark Barnum

Lot # 5A (Sale Order: 6 of 120)

5 great progressive letters from same Lieutenant over several months. Letter 1 - Dated January 18, 1862 - Left Anapolis with 3rd Brigade and saw a boat loaded with troop...mores from the 9th New Jersey as well as the 53rd New York at the mouth of the Potomac. Details about his life and surroundings. Writing is light, and in pencil. Letter 2 - Dated February 12, 1862 - Hatteras Inlet at Camp Winfield. He is concerned about the health of the men and his painful, swollen ear. Had just heard from Gen. Williams, who was told by "Burnsides himself," that Roanoke Island was taken with forts, ammo and guns and Colonel Shaw, who was in charge of the Island, was in prison. He mentions Goldsborough's naval attack of Elizabeth with 35 killed and 200 wounded and the death of Colonel Charles Russell. Writing is in pencil. Letter 3 - July 31, 1862 - Newport News Virginia. Could be ordered out with 48 hours notice because a report said Stonewall Jackson is approaching Suffolk and he might leave here to engage him with General Burnsides "at the head". He mentions the 11th needing men with only about 68 left due to transfers, discharges and 11 deaths. He is now under command of a new Colonel, H. Kingsbury, a West Point grad. They might join McClellan's Army under Griffin Balley. Writing is in ink. Letter 4 - Dated August 20, 1862 - His regiment is now in charge of guarding Fredricksburg. Colonel Kingsbury is now military governor of Fredricksburg. The residents are resentful but they are able to procure all the vegetables and milk they want. They also secured bridges on the Rappahannock River. He talks about how nice Fredricksburg is. Writing is in ink. Letter 5 - Dated September 28, 1862 - Mouth of Antietam (Creek). 11 days after Battle of Antietum. His regiment left Fredricksberg on August 31. While in Fredricksburg, people cheered for them and every window had a waving flag. He was on the battlefield of South Mountain. The 11th was the first to advance and fire on Stone Bridge over the Antietum on the order of General Burnsides. Excellent account of battle. Very detailed and top tier account of early stage of Antietum. Colonel Kingsbury died in this battle and Samuel was very emotional about this loss. Writing is in ink. Samuel Barnum served with the 11th Regiment Connecticut Infantry Company E. Samuel died 19 June 1864 in D.C.

9 Progressive Letters From 1861 - 1863 To Sara Loomis From Lt. Samuel Clark Barnum

Lot # 5B (Sale Order: 7 of 120)

9 progressive letters from same Lieutenant over several months. Letter 6 - April 27, 1861. At head quarters Rifle Co. "E" 2nd Regiment New Haven, CT. Talks about being...more quartered at the wigwam, taking meals at the Music Hall with a company of Birmingham Boys. They drill for about 6 hours a day. Same letter has second date of May 1, 1861. He saw the Governor's Guard on the way to Hartford to Election. His commander is Captain Cook. Written in pencil. Letter 7 - May 26, 1861 - Washington D.C. Camp Wills. He and the regiment are in good spirits and health with good rations. Have seen some hard times but, "my zeal for the stars and stripes will sustain me through many more trials than I have yet". Six or seven regiments are camped close by with the 1st & 3rd CT volunteers. He found an uncle in the 1st CT and a cousin in the Texas Rangers. Heard news of Col. Ellsworth's death. They wake at 4:45 a.m. and train for 8 hours a day, went out on a 2 day target shoot. Written in pencil. Letter 8 - June 30, 1862 - New Bern NC. (Battle of New Bern was on March 14, 1862. He talks about the men getting mail. He is upset that he sent a picture of himself to "you girls" but hasn't gotten a picture from them. They may be marching to Wilmington, 80 miles away, but only the strongest men will be able to start the march. He and a friend, Pierpont, are close to a promotion. He received the quilt from Sara that he used while boarding at her home. Written in ink. Letter 9 - July 23, 1862 - Newport News VA. They were removed from New Bern by way of the "Dismal Swamp Canal" and passed places of great interest. Gosport Navy Yard, which was burnt by the rebels before leaving. He has fully realized the evils of war, seeing the ruins. Two days at Fort Norfolk, Crony Island, Sewalls Point, two places of battle between the Merrimack and Cumberland. The Old Cumberland remains where she first sank plus the charred remains of the Congress. There is a large body of troops, about 25 regiments and the 6th and 7th CT Regiments are coming. The death of Captain Palmer. They now have a new colonel, Henry Kingsbury from West Point. He sees great things for the 11th CT. He hopes CT will be able to send its quota of troops without drafting. He would be ashamed of "my old state" if draft has to happen. No excuses for a poor show of patriotism. Written in ink. Letter 10 - May 30, 1863. His regiment is at the Nansmond River. 6 companys are camped here about 6 miles from town, under command of Captain Brown and a Battery Stevens (an early ironclad design). The insects and mosquitos are bad. The local people are hospitable and pleasant even though most have freinds in the Confederacy and many lost their servants but no bitterness towards the north. Most are wealthy planters. Met an old man, Captain Cohorn, who was in the War of 1812. A perfect gentlemen from a great family and had oil paintings of family from 1773 and burried for 5 years during the revolution. He finds the area nice. Peaches and indian corn. He had strawberries and real, genuine cream. Some troops for 2 days were tearing up fail road tracks between Suffolk and Blackwater. Suffolk might be evacuated except for the 2nd brigade to go defend Portsmouth and Norfolk with General Getty in charge. Written in pen. Letter 11 - August 15, 1863 - Head Quarters 11th CT Vol. He writes things are well but its 103 degrees. He knows people on a list of new draftees from Norfolk CT. He does miss the company of "refined female society". But the 15th CT Vol. have 19 ladies, officer's wives and friends. Only one lady in his camp, the major's wife. His 25th birthday is coming up and he feels like an old bachelor. His friend R. Murphy was killed. Vixburg (sic) and Portsmouth are gone and the Mississippi is open from St. Louis to New Orleans and the (south) "soundly thrashed" at Gettysburg. Mentions 25,000 men assembled at White House VA. Mentions that a part of the force went to Hanover Junction to destroy a bridge over the South River, part of the Virginia Central R.R. Diptheria prevails in some of the camp. Written in pencil. For a continuation of the letter description, please see photo at end of photos.
