Volume one, all published. Folio (20 6/8 x 13 3/8 inches). Half title, list of plates. With 49 exceptionally fine colour engraved plates finished by hand. Modern half red morocco gilt. First edition, and a rare large paper copy. Originally published in eight parts, "Oiseaux nouveaux et rares de l'Amerique et des Indes" was available in three states: folio, with both colored and uncolored plates; large quarto, with colored plates only as here; and quarto, with uncolored plates only. Only this one volume was published with 49 plates of a total of 240 plates planned.

Provenance: with a near contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper to Florence Delphia Hall from her father dated 1881; with the blind library stamp of Theodore J. Hoover of San Francisco and London on the title-page. First edition in book form, first published in parts between July 1853 and June 1855 (with a title-page issued in 1856), was intended to complement the octavo edition of Audubon's celebrated work "The Birds of America, from Drawings Made in the United States and their Territories."
