The lot includes a beautiful set of circa 1860s Southern Plains rawhide wrapped wood saddle stirrups with beadwork from the Apache. The set shows a carved wood construction which are completely wrapped in rawhide parfleche which are sinew and rawhide lacing sewn. The outside edges of the stirrups shows a cut out or incised design, which has been documented as being a pattern used in saddle blankets and saddle bags from the Apache of the Indian Wars era. The set also shows sinew sewn beadwork showing bands of chalk white glass trade seed beads, of the 19th-century early age. The set shows a nice patina and dark coloring. There is some separation and wear from its very early age and well used condition, but these are truly historic and rare which very few of these being in museum or private collections. For example of a similar pattern of stirrups see the set in the Penn Museum marked as being Apache from Oklahoma near Rio Grande. These are one of the only example of early Apache stirrups with incised cutouts and beadwork that have been offered to the public. Each measures 6-inches wide by 5.5-inches high by 6-inches wide. From a Bozeman, Montana collection and recovered at the same time as the Comanche saddle.
