Handcarved Wood Hopi Eototo Kokopelli

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 15 of 732)

For your consideration is an Original Signed Hand Carved Wood Hopi Eototo Kokopelli Kachina with a removable head mask. Eototo is the chief of all Kachina and knows all of the ceremonies. He is the spiritual counterpart of the village chief and as such is called "father" of all the Kachina. He controls the seasons and is sometimes called husband Hahai-i Wuhti. In the southwestern United States, a supernatural being that represents a life-force or embodies a natural phenomenon such as the sun, the moon, a plant, or an animal is called a koko by the Zuni and a katsina (commonly anglicized as “kachina”) by the Hopi. Such beings have the power to control rainfall, crop growth, and fertility; to cure and protect; and to act as messengers between the gods and human beings. Carved kachina figures, also known as kachina dolls, are representations of these spirits and can have a sacred or an educational purpose. During some ceremonies, the carvings are given to community members to reward virtuous behavior, recognize a recent marriage, or teach children about religion. The Kokopelli has animal fur around its wrists, ankles, waist, neck and head. Leather fringe accents on hands, elbows and leggings, feathered headdress on removable head mask and feather in hand grips. Very detailed painted symbols on breechclout and wood base. Removable head mask and body painted in yellow and black. An impressive piece of Hopi artistry and craftsmanship. Measures 12.5"H x 5.75"W x 4.75"D, removable head measures 5"H at top of feather headdress x 3.75" diameter. Combined weight is 6 oz.*

19th C. Sioux Beaded Puzzle Pouch - N. Dakota

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 16 of 732)

This is a fantastic and rare beaded puzzle pouch from the Sioux of the 19th-century near Cannonball River North Dakota with old collection / museum tag. This example shows sinew sewing with Indian tanned hide and Indian tanned hide fringes showing a Maltese cross symbol on both sides and fancy beaded edge done in 1800’s period glass trade seed beads that were also sinew sewn. The beads show colors of greasy Cheyenne pink, greasy yellow, semi-transparent rose, semi-transparent teal, greasy butterscotch yellow, cobalt, greasy blue, and semi-transparent light purple / blue. The piece is accompanied by an early fountain pen written collection museum tag which is marked, “Sioux, near Cannon Ball River. N. Dak / Puzzle Pouche”. Wyoming Collected Petrified Wood Slab 43LB, 14oz.

Lot # 23 (Sale Order: 23 of 732)

Featured in this lot is a petrified wood mineral deposit from Wyoming and collected during the 20th century. The petrified wood slab shows crystal formations and mineral deposits. Unlike other types of fossils which are typically impressions or compressions, petrified wood is a three-dimensional representation of the original organic material. The petrifaction process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment or volcanic ash and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen which inhibits aerobic decomposition. Mineral-laden water flowing through the covering material deposits minerals in the plants cells. As the plant decays, a stone mold forms in its place. The organic matter needs to become petrified before it decomposes completely. The process lasts millions of years. All the organic materials have been replaced with minerals while retaining the original structure of the limb. The condition of this sample of petrified wood is well preserved with no alterations and an all-natural look. The measurement are 7"W x 15"L x 7"D, weight is 43lb 14oz.*
