Stamp - First US Stamp Featuring The American Flag, 30-cent "Shield, Eagle and Flags"

Lot # 54

Stamp - First US Stamp Featuring The American Flag, 30-cent "Shield, Eagle and Flags" Stamp issued in April/May 1869. The series of 1869 was also known as the Pictorial issue of which this 30-cent stamp was the most famous. The design shows a large shield in the center that contains the denomination "30". It is topped by an eagle and 13 stars to represent the 13 original states. Together with the the 10-cent issue from the same series, this was the first US stamp to feature an eagle. Four American Flags are displayed beside the shield. This was the first time the flag was shown on a US stamp. The flags and parts of the background wre printed in blue. The regular postage rate at the time was 3-cents so this stamp was rarely used for mail sent within the US. The typical usage was on mail to France and other European and Asian nations. These stamps was only available until February 1870 when they were replaced with a new series that returned to the traditional portrait designs. These factors made this stamp one of the scarcest issues from the series in 1869. This stamp is in a genuine leather folio presentation case and offered for sale by the Postal Commemorative Society for $498.

Stamp - America's First High-Value Commemorative Stamps - 3

Lot # 60

Stamp - America's First High-Value Commemorative Stamps - 3 stamps, 15-cent, 30-cent and 50-cent, from the Columbian Exposition Issue of 1893.
- The first US commemorative stamps were issued on January 2, 1893 to honor the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Exposition was held from May 1 to October 30, 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' first voyage to America. In addition to stamps for standard domestic postage rates the Exposition issue also included 15-cent, 30-cent and 50-cent stamps that were generally used to pay the postage for heavy items to foreign countries. Each stamp design was based on artwork featuring an episode surrounding Columbus's historic first voyage.
- The 15-cent stamp shows Columbus presenting his discoveries to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain in 1493, based on a painting by Ricardo Baloca y Caneieo, which is believed to have been destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. It was most commonly used in combination with other stamps to meet more expensive heavyweight charges.
- The 30-cent stamp, "Columbus at La Rabida", depicts Columbus with Franciscan monks prior to his first voyage, based on a 1876 painting by Felipe Maso, also believed to be lost. In 1490, after the Spanish refused his pleas for support, Columbus shifted his focus to the French Court, and his travels took him through La Rabida, where he accepted the hospitality of the local monastery. It is here he met Martin Alonso Pinson, who later became commander of the Pinta. This value was most commonly used to pay for mail to expensive foreign destinations.
- The 50-cent stamp "Recall of Columbus" (the first 50-cent stamp in US history) shows Columbus receiving a message from Queen Isabella recalling him to the Spanish court to announce her sponsorship of the voyage, based on a painting by Augustus Goodyear Heaton, which hangs in the Senate Wing of the US Capitol. Refused for Spanish support for a second time in 1492 this shows Columbus astride a mule on the road to France when a messenger approached and announced that the King and Queen of Spain had agreed to support his voyage. This stamp was primarily used in combination to meet the needs of heavyweight or international shipments.
- These stamps are displayed in a genuine leather folio presentation case offered by the Postal Commemorative Society, $800
*Commemorative Stamps - Issued to honor an important person, event or anniversary - printed in small quantities and sold only for a limited time.
