They helped establish the Southern rock genre in the early 1970's. They reached the height of their commercial success by the end the the decade, it recorded and performed continuously under various line-ups for 50 years. Lead vocalist Doug Gray remains the only original band member still active with the band. "Carolina Dreams" was The Marshall Tucker Band's sixth album and an ode to the band's home state, South Carolina and was released in January 1977. Focusing on Western themes, it spawned their biggest hit, "Heard It In A Love Song" which rose to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, taking the album with it to #22 and #23 on the Country and Pop charts respectively.

"Quadrophenia" is the sixth studio album and was released as a double album on October 26, 1973 by Track Records. It is the group's third rock opera, the two previous being "A Quick One, While He's Away" and "Tommy". This is the only Who album entirely composed by Pete Townshend. The album made a positive impact on the mod revival movement of the late 1970's and the resulting 1979 film adaptation was successful.

In 2003 the album was ranked as #175 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. They were in the genre of pop, easy listening, soft rock. Their song "We've Only Just Begun" was the duo's song that gained them an international reputation for a decade. The album topped the Canadian Albums Chart and peaked at #2 on the US Billboard albums chart. It was also successful in the UK entering the top 50 of the official chart for 76 weeks during the first half of the 1970's. This album and its singles earned the Carpenters 8 Grammy award nominations including Album of the Year.
