Richard Croson, known as Dick to friends and family, bought his first firearm when he was 12 years old with a note from his mother. To say he loved guns is an understatement. He found every aspect of firearms interesting. From the mechanics of how they work and how they were built to how they shot. He was a founding member of the Council Bluffs Rifle and Pistol Club. As Secretary, he posted the first advertisement for the club in the newspaper. He would be a life member of this club, paid for in both money and labor. As his health deteriorated, he could not be out at the range like he wanted to be. Dick opened his first gun shop, Missouri Valley Arms, in Council Bluffs Iowa. It was a partnership and ran for a few years. During this time, he built firearms and accessories. Some of the rifles even bear his name. The business ran for a few years, but time and other obligations forced it to close. Dick moved out into the country in eastern Pottawattamie county and opened Croson's Rural Repair. He had and drove a repair circuit for stores in Atlantic, Council Bluffs, Glenwood, Red Oak, and Shenandoah, Iowa and also Omaha Nebraska. In 1984, he decided to open his own shop again and opened Old Trails Gun Shop on Pioneer Trail in Macedonia Iowa. It ended up moving to Carson Iowa on Highway 92 until it closed. Dick was also interested in the history of firearms and gained tremendous knowledge of the subject. His favorite rifles were old levers. He collected any kind of firearm and if he came across a cartridge, he would buy or build something to shoot it in.
