1984 PEUGEOT 205 T16 RALLY PROTOTYPE

Lot # 1601.1 (Sale Order: 117 of 160)

The Peugeot 205 was a supermini produced by the French car manufacturer Peugeot. The 205s use of Macpherson struts at the front and torsion bars and trailing arms at the rear was a key ingredient of the cars success. It was fully independent and very compact. It was designed to minimize suspension intrusion into the vehicles body providing a wide flat load space while delivering excellent ride and handling qualities. Around 1985 GM Engineers became quite interested in studying the 205 T16. Its transverse turbocharged mid-engine Ferguson-sourced all-wheel-drive (w/ 3 differentials) and unique suspension presented quite a performance and handling package. The knowledge gained from evaluating this vehicle might be quite useful in the development of future products. Hence as was often the case competitive make vehicles would be procured for analysis. In this instance two T16s were purchased with this one remaining unmolested still representing its original build design. To help boost the 205s image Peugeot entered modified specially-tuned T-16s into (and won) numerous high-profile Road Rally events between 1985 and 1988. To homologate the 205 T16 (Turbo 16 in France) Group B rally car Peugeot had to produce at least 200 road-going examples. The road variants shared the transverse mid-engine four-wheel drive layout of the rally car but had less than half the power; at around 197 hp. The T was for Turbo; the 16 stands for 16 valves an uncommon feature at that time for turbocharged engines. Outwardly similar to a normal 205 the T16 had wider wheel arches and the whole rear section lifted up to give access to the engine. Underneath the complex drivetrain from the rally car was kept to abide by the Group B rules. All 200 built were left-hand drive. This particular car is deemed to be one of the specially-built Road Cars. This car was manufactured by Peugeot in street-use configuration and has not been modified to race spec. **SOLD ON BILL OF SALE**

1984 PEUGEOT 205 T16 RALLY PROTOTYPE

Lot # 1602 (Sale Order: 118 of 160)

The Peugeot 205 was a supermini produced by the French car manufacturer Peugeot. The 205s use of Macpherson struts at the front and torsion bars and trailing arms at the rear was a key ingredient of the cars success. The special Rally Race version dubbed T16 was a 205 two-door hatchback but in reality it shared nothing with the mass-production 205 except the windscreen doors and headlamps. The front half of the chassis including the passenger cell was a dedicated steel monocoque while the rear half was a tubular steel spaceframe structure holding the transversely mounted engine gearbox and rear suspension. All the mechanicals could be accessed by the unique hinging rear body section. A center differential split drive between the front and rear wheels depending on conditions from 25:75 to 45:55 front/rear. Double wishbones anti-roll bars and coil-over-shocks made up the suspension and consequently required wider wheel arches. Powering the car was a mid-mounted all-alloy 16 valve engine with Bosch fuel injection dry sump lubrication and an intercooled KKK turbo. All 200 T16s Road Cars were built with left-hand drive. Back in the 1980s it was quite common for GM to purchase competitive-make vehicles for engineering analysis. Typically two were purchased: one for deep-evaluation and even systems modification and another for original reference and on-road evaluation. This particular vehicle was considered to be one which was deeply evaluated as it became equipped with a revolutionary suspension system (GM named it: Active Suspension) a special rally-style roll bar system racing type seats with 5-point harnesses and possibly other modifications that may not be evident to the casual observer. The engine was heavily offset to the right so that it and the gearbox could be located at either side of the longitudinal propeller shaft. To offset the weight of the engine the battery and intercooler were mounted at the opposite side in the engine compartment. **SOLD ON BILL OF SALE**
