WWI Yard Long Photograph Remington - UMC Factory Bridgeport Connecticut

Lot # 2126 (Sale Order: 34 of 355)

World War One color yard long photograph of the Remington Arms factory,   Remington - U.M.C. (United Metallic Cartridge) Company bordering Boston Street in Bridgeport, C...moreonnecticut. The 7.5" x 27" yardlong is in overall excellent rolled condition with only minor cracking. Published by E.S. Marsh, Remington City News Dealer. Early in WW1, The Czar of Russia placed an order with the company to make one million Russian rifles and 100 million rounds of ammunition. As a result, Marcellus Hartley Dodge, the owner of Remington - UMC, decided to build a factory along Boston Street. The factory was made of 13 separate buildings connected by a central, 5 story corridor. It was one half mile long and covered 80 acres of floor space. It was the largest factory that had ever been built in the United States all at one time. In addition to the Russian order, UMC-Remington filled orders for the British, French and other allies fighting in WWI. When the Lusitania was sunk by a German U-Boat in 1915, it was carrying millions of rounds of UMC - Remington ammunition. It was the secondary explosions from the ammunition on board that caused the ship to sink so quickly. In 1920, Dodge sold the factory to General Electric for 7 million dollars. It served as GE's world headquarters for decades. In-house shipping is available. Open pickup is Tuesday, Oct. 29 from Noon to 7 pm at our offices in Carroll, OH 43112 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. We charge $5/lot if you want to pick up a different day. WWI 3rd Division Group - 10th F.A. Dog Tags & German POW Made Trench Knife - Letter Opener

Lot # 2127 (Sale Order: 35 of 355)

World War One group belonging to John Werner of Battery F,10th Field Artillery, 3rd Division. Included are his set of dog tags and a trench art knife - letter opener that...more was made for him by a German Prisoner of War.   The German soldier engraved "Weltkrieg" (World War) on the blade and 1914 1918 on the crossguard. An Austrian 10 Heller Coin is affixed to the center of the crossguard. John Werner engraved the other side of the knife. The blade reads, "J.R. Werner "F" 10th F.A.". He added a 3rd Division insignia at the tip. The handle is engraved "Made by German Prisoner" and   the cross guard is engraved "Chateau Thierry" "St. Mihiel" and (Meuse Argonne 1918). An examination of how each man engraved the number "1" shows that a different hand engraved each side. The "1" in 1914 1918 on the obverse crossguard has the typical European style of an upward curve at the top of the number while the number 1 in 1918 on the reverse crossguard is engraved in the North American manner of a straight line. We have not untied the dog tags from the knife because the the knot at the end of the rope is tightly melded and has most likely been displayed that way for decades, perhaps by John Werner himself. Length of knife is 10.25". Crossguard is 3.5".   In-house shipping is available. Open pickup is Tuesday, Oct. 29 from Noon to 7 pm at our offices in Carroll, OH 43112 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. We charge $5/lot if you want to pick up a different day. Rare Beat Back the Hun With Liberty Bonds WWI Patriotic Propaganda

Lot # 2133A (Sale Order: 40 of 355)

Poster size not including board: 30 1/8"   x 19 1/8". Rare WWI patriotic poster featuring a German soldier coming over the horizon with blood on his hands and dripping fr...moreom his bayonet, presumably from French and English forces on the front. Glued down to the backing foam. This poster is rarely seen, and was likely produced in very small numbers as it features an unusually horrifying depiction of the enemy, complete with bayonet that extends up beyond the normal margin of the poster.  The caption, €œBeat Back the HUN with LIBERTY BONDS € capitalized on the fear of Americans and encouraged them to buy Liberty Bonds/loans to finance the war. Liberty Loans were bonds that the government sold so they could keep up with the expenses of war. These were sold back to the government after the war. The word €œHun € is a derogatory word towards the Germans that derives from the nomadic tribe, the Huns, in the 4th and 6th century AD, known for their barbaric and warlike invasions ( €œBeat back the Hun with Liberty Bonds €, 2017). Displaying the Germans as the Huns rationalized the war as the fight between good and evil personifying the Germans as animalistic, savage killing machines. Personifying the enemy as non human was a common propaganda practice to drive Americans to purchase Liberty Bonds to finance the war. This poster was created by Frederick Strothmann in 1918. Strothmann was an American artist and illustrator. According to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Strothmann was best known for his illustration work for popular authors such as Mark Twain. Size of poster only is xxx" x xxx". In house shipping is available.
